History

Established in 2006.

Liz started Nutzy Mutz & Crazy Catz after being in the cycling industry sales world for 16 years. It was time for a change, and since she had always had a passion for proper nutrition in dogs and cats, she decided to open her own store.

Business Owner

Liz has always had a passion for animals, ever since she would rescue the one-​eyed, one-​legged stuffed animals as a wee child. That passion transferred into adulthood, where she jumped in with two feet to care about animals in need. Along with her personal household of 3 dogs and 4 cats, she and her hubbie always have a foster dog and cat (s).

Another passion of Liz’s is animal nutrition and animal behavior — both of which she is very well-​versed. She stays on top of all of her current food manufacturers practices, along with new and upcoming foods. And her reading library is constantly renewed with dog behavior books — all of which she puts in her lending library at her stores, when she’s done!

All of these passions transfer perfectly into Nutzy Mutz & Crazy Catz. Liz loves to help her customers and their four-​legged pals.

Amazing selection of dog and cat food and treats. It’s a small space but you’d be amazed by the variety.
There are resident cats at the store, but they still let my puppy come in! She was very curious about the cats.
I loved their selection of chews. I had no idea trachea existed, but I got one for my pup and she loved it. I also bought a knee cap and a twisted bully stick for her.
I want to come back and try their other dog foods. I know they have mom & pop brands that are reputable.

My favorite pet supply store in Madison. The staff are all animal people and very knowledgeable on the products they sell. If you’re looking to try something new they have tons of samples and are generous with sharing them. They’ll also take back food you purchased that doesn’t work out.
Lots of great pet-​friendly toys and products, and there’s almost always an adoptable cat or two hanging around.

Great pet store. The staff and owner are very friendly and helpful. They stand behind their products, and, although I have never returned anything, I believe they will take back pretty much anything — even food if your pet has issues with it or will not eat it. Their lamb lung dog treats are super inexpensive and dogs love them!

. There customer service is spectacular. Answer all my question. They really do stand behind there products. My dog is a picky eater. They have all sorts of sample pack to try. Best yet dog foods made in Wisconsin. Glad I went. Keep up the great work.

We stopped in this weekend because we’ve been having trouble with our Aussie’s diet. He doesn’t care for the food they fed at the shelter (lamb and rice from mounds), nor the kirkland chicken and rice. In addition to not wanting to eat, he has had some gastrointestinal issues on both, and seems to have some allergies that have gotten worse on the chicken and rice (lots of paw chewing and licking).
We were the only ones in the store, so the employee was super attentive and very helpful. She gave us four free samples to try with different protein sources and some grain free. She also suggested if those don’t work we consider a freeze-​dried or frozen raw diet (which I expected) — they carry both. They also had some fun looking collars, nice beds, and toys. It was a little pricey, but worth it I think. The shop was small and crammed packed with lots of cool stuff, so I could see it being hard to bring our dog in since he’s big and gets excited with other people/​animals. If you have a smaller dog or one who’s calmer, no worries.
As a side note, they do seem to advocate eastern medicine to complement our typical vet care. I’m personally fine with that, but I suppose it could put some people off. She wasn’t pushy at all and was super nice and offered to give us some recommendations if we needed them after we get his eating back on track! So if you’re not in to that, just a heads up. Or if you are looking for that, here’s a great place to go.

A lady with gorgeous collars at the dog park told me she got them at Nutzy Mutz. I loved the store from the moment I walked inside. Its small but laid out well, bright and friendly. I love the lounging animals! They’re so friendly!
Liz is fantastic. I just love her and I don’t even know her that well. :) She’s always happy to see me, showers my dog with treats and praise and answers all my questions quickly. You can tell she really knows what she’s talking about. But not only her, her employees know too. One of them recommended Acana cat food for my picky kitty and she loves it! (Due to crystals in her urine, I need to switch to dry food now and Nutzy Mutz is where I will go for help) They also found me a great dog food (Innova) and some supplements for my lab mix with dry skin. I send everyone I can here!

This place is great. The owner, Liz, is ridiculously knowledgable about pet supplies and pet food, and always times the time to listen to what you are looking for and has good suggestions. Their Lakeside location is really cute. I like the store so much that I always make a special trip down there even though there are tons of closer places to buy dog food.

I adore Nutzy Mutz. They are definitely not the most convenient place for me to shop, but I go out of my way to support them because they are super friendly, knowledgeable and carry a wide variety of fun products for my pets. The owner, Liz, always remembers my name and my dog and makes me feel more like a friend than a customer.
Nutzy Mutz carries several high quality foods for dogs and cats, including a great selection of dry, wet and raw. Everything for sale is researched thoroughly by the staff and I feel confident knowing I am feeding my pets the highest quality, safest food available. Nutzy Mutz also understands the need to spoil a pet. I’ve found the best treats and chews there, and it is so lovely shopping bulk treats for my pet and never having to worry about where they were made or how they were manufactured. They also have the nicest selection of unique collars and leashes in town, including some made locally and other small vendors I haven’t seen elsewhere. There is a variety of toys, grooming supplies, health supplements and more — - even organic chicken feed and info about the Urban Chicken Network.
I can’t say enough good things about Nutzy Mutz! They are one more reason shopping shopping local is the way to go.

I have visited both locations of this store in Madison and both times I have had bad experiences. The last time I went to the store on Midvale, there were boxes of merchandise everywhere like they were restocking, but the girl working was sitting behind the counter, talking to her friend. The store is fairly small, so it felt cramped and hard to get around just because there was so much clutter everywhere. I couldn’t find the price a can of food and was aggravated that I had to interrupt their conversation to ask. I have also been to the Lakeside location. After I was done shopping, I stood at the counter for a few minutes, waiting to be helped. The salesgirl was helping a woman find a retractable leash, but then when the woman was set to go, the salesgirl asked if the woman could check out first — in front of me — even though I had been waiting there for a couple minutes! How rude. Their selection of stuff is okay, I like all the different cat food that they have and the prices are decent. But I will not be shopping at either location again because the customer service really leaves something to be desired.

When my girlfriend and I asked the owner if she carried Halo for cats because we were interested in switching the cats food she explained that she only did special orders for the Halo which she was perfectly happy to do but gave us an entire box of free samples to try it out before we ordered it! The cats loved it and it’s been very beneficial for them so we’ve been ordering our Halo from her ever since. They also showcase various shelter animals that are up for adoption there which is a great service for them to provide and the store is really cute to boot. Do your animals a favor and switch them over to something natural and holisitc. If you wouldn’t eat what is in their food than why should they? Note that I said «what is in their food» meaning the additives and whatnot, I don’t actually eat cat food.

The best place to support when you need to get quality food, toys, or accessories for your pets! The store owner is always knowledgeable and always have treats for your dog if you bring them in. She is always willing to help me find just what I need and usually has samples of different types of foods. Prices here are great and it’s a very nice addition to the Lakeside neighborhood.
