Having been self employed for about a decade, partially in Denmark and for the past years in New York, I have seen my fair share of accountants and how they deal with me and my tax situation (multiple businesses, tax liable in two countries, owning property + rental, depreciating assets, married etc. — nothing crazy, but also not the standard case)
Aaron has done our taxes for the past year and helped me setup an LLC, and I have never in my entire life been so satisfied with the help I have gotten and how he has been in our encounters.
He always takes his time to listen properly and hear me out on all my ramblings and concerns, takes notes and responds carefully and precisely. He is always willing to take the time to properly explain what is going on, as I have a big need to understand all this stuff and how each element affects the others. I probably ask the same questions multiple times but he is always friendly and replies and explains. This is very empowering to me.
He also seems very efficient, and more interested in creating efficient routines and processes for himself than to hire a bunch of assistants that just get in the way and increase cost.
I guess it’s also a matter of personal taste. Some people prefer to understand what happens and to be involved. Others just want to hand it over and get rid of it. I’m more the former so for me Aaron is perfect. What I would recommend is that you at least take a meeting with him and see if it feels right.

Aaron Smyle made a big difference in my financial situation — for the worse. He came recommended to me by an investment adviser at Morgan Stanley. I met with him in 2011 to map out a financial plan that would allow me to realize my financial goals — to save money for travel and put money into my SEP/​IRA. Also, since I am a freelancer, I need money in the bank should I suddenly lose my job.
Aaron drew up a budget based on estimated taxes from the previous year, when I earned less than in 2011. I adhered to the budget for a whole year, but when tax time rolled around, I owed a colossal tax bill because I had underpaid my estimated taxes to the tune of almost $ 16K. By the time I paid it off, my entire savings were wiped out. No money in the bank for travel, no cushion in case my job disappears. And I had no money to pay my estimated taxes for the first quarter of this year, so after a year under his guidance, I am actually in debt and may have to borrow from my SEP/​IRA to pay off taxes.
Needless to say, I will be looking for a new financial adviser going forward.
