Resurrected by famed big-​wave riders Laird Hamilton and Dave Kalama, SUPing offers a full-​body ‘core’ workout like you wouldn’t believe. And, even better, you’re outside — not in a boring, smelly gym.

Stand up paddling can be done anywhere there is water: a lake, river, stream, fish pond, wave pool… anywhere there is access to safe waters, as well as in the surfing lineups around the world.

I had been paddling and competing in SUP for a few years, when a friend and her husband expressed an interest in seeing what this whole Stand Up Paddling was all about. They met me at Mother’s Beach, I showed them the correct paddle stroke, put them on boards and away we were.

She happened to run a website that featured «things to do in L.A.,» and encouraged me to set up a profile with her company. One thing led to another and here we are.

Hi…I’m Wade Lawson. Originally from Arkansas. I’m 44, a commercial helicopter pilot, an outrigger canoe paddler and team rider for Tomahawk Paddleboards. I am one of six or seven guys in the world who regularly surf Maverick’s on a SUP. Given the infancy of this sport, I would consider myself proficient.

Over the last seven years, I have taught hundreds of people how to surf, paddle and fly helicopters. When it comes to instruction, I am an expert.

Absent some unforseeable cicumstance, my wife and I personally teach all lessons.

This is in contrast to most schools, where lessons are routinely farmed out to sixteen-​year-​olds.
