Specialties
Hundreds of acres of grasslands, woodlands, and wetlands await you at Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary. For birders of all experience levels, there are observation blinds overlooking a shallow wetland that attracts herons, egrets, and shorebirds, as well as muskrats and mink. In late October, the sanctuary is buzzing with activity during the annual Daniel Webster Farm Day, which features hayrides, games, crafts, food, live music, and other attractions. We offer school and group programs, summer camp, and travel programs through the North River Wildlife Sanctuary headquarters office.
History
Established in 1984.
In the 1970s, the old Dwyer Farm (now the Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary) was scheduled to be sold for development. Led by Dorothea Reeves, a group of Marshfield residents were determined to prevent the sale and to save the farm. In fact, «Save Dwyer Farm!» became their rallying cry. The residents put on a series of fundraisers and concerts at the farm, which led to the property’s acquisition and donation to Mass Audubon in 1984.
Farm Day (formerly «Save Dwyer Farm Day») is a commemoration of those fundraisers and a celebration of the coming together of South Shore residents and Mass Audubon to preserve this incredible space.
