Today’s errands found me on 112, between Sunrise Highway and the LIE. I took the opportunity to patronize a little Mexican place I’ve had my eye on. Burrito Express is a smallish establishment located in a little strip mall on the west side of 112, a bit south of Walgreens. Think pizza place. A few tables to eat in, but it looks like predominately take-out to me. A nice, clean, and welcoming environment prevails, with very friendly and helpful staff. A nice selection of hot food laid out. The menu is fairly predictable… burritos, tacos, sopes, taquitos, etc. It being hot as hell today, and only lunch time, I ordered a small chicken quesadilla with a side of black beans. The quesadilla was as good as any I’ve ever had, and much better than many. The pico de gallo was also very good. The corn tortilla chips they threw in were salty, but the salsa was smoking hot! Sadly, I have to report that the black beans were unremarkable. Not bad, by any stretch of the imagination, but not very flavorful. This was a disappointment, because I am a big fan of black beans – a healthy legume that will rock your world when prepared properly. The interesting twist here is that they also advertise Puerto Rican food. I am definitely going back to try the arroz con gandules(a personal fave) the pernil sodo, and of course the platanos. The prices are good, service excellent… definitely worth a visit. Don’t leave without a bottle of Mexican soda. I had Tamarind today and it was great.
