We offer superior customer service and avoid wine snobbery. Our store also specializes in unique wineries and varietals, artisan spirits and liquor, and craft beer. We make honest recommendations so our customers walk out of Joe’s with the bottle that best fits their occasion. We enjoy expanding your horizons by moving out of the ordinary and maybe trying new varietals of wine, leagues of liquor, or impressive styles of beers. Our staff has tasted most everything in the store so just ask what we think!

No matter what level of knowledge you have, Joe’s Wines & Liquors knowledgeable and dedicated staff is here to work with you. We provide our customers with tremendous value in our huge wine selection, high-​gravity beers, mixers, etc.

History

Established in 1959.

Joe’s is a small one-​of-​a-​kind business operated in the heart of Midtown Memphis. The store is known for the Sputnik sign outside as much as the joy that is spread from the inside.

The Sputnik sign, named after the similarly styled Russian satellite, is one of the few «roto-​spheres» to still be in operation. Upon purchase the current ownership made renovation of the Sputnik a priority. The store held a fundraiser, which received enourmous support from the community, and the sign was restored to working condition. It was re-​lit during a neighborhood «thank you» block party in 1999.

The Store was one of the original Piggly Wiggly stores many years ago, but has functioned as a liquor store since 1959.

I must say, this is one of the best growler stations around. I love how they show how much is left in each, and you can view that same stat online via their website. My growler guy was very knowledgeable about the beers on tap. Growler was filled to perfection. I looked around and they have a awesome selection of wine and liquor at reasonable prices. If I didn’t live so far away I would be here for every growler fill!

Bought a wine listed for one price and it rang up as another. I informed them of the issue and was told they hadn’t updated the price yet on the shelf, but I’ll still have to pay the price it rang up as. They said they would change it immediately. I went back two days later and the price hadn’t been changed.
I’m not a fan of this bait and switch and will not be back. And I didn’t appreciate the attitude of who I assume was the manager or owner.

Everyone is always so friendly and helpful on any occasion. No question is a stupid question that’s for sure. Whatever type of drink you’re searching for they’re guarenteed to have it or something close to it.

Haters gonna hate, but most seem to agree that this is the best liquor shop in Memphis and I’m going to say one of the best in the United States. Wine selections are excellent at every price point and being able to get wine & beer in growlers from their taps is something unique that I’ve rarely seen before in a retail shop (and I travel/​drink a lot). Beer & liquor selections are quite good and prices don’t seem out of line to me (though in fairness I’ve never been to this Buster’s place that a few people reference but after going to Joe’s I have no reason to switch). All I know is that the people at Joe’s are friendly and knowledgeable, they carry many awesome wines (including some of my favorite Oregon Pinots from Patricia Green Cellars which aren’t always easy to find), and it seems like the kind of local shop that you just want to support. When I’m in Memphis, this where I’m going to shop for wine, spirits, and beer (though I also support my other «local» shops in New Orleans, Portland, Chicago, and San Francisco). Bravo to Joe’s, excellent job!

So we can all agree, the Sputnik is fantastic.
But inside, Joe’s just gets better. Just amazing customer service — always helpful, nice, funny, and knowledgable, and always willing to help, even when it’s insanely busy. A pretty big range of prices, so there’s something for every budget. Also, the wine and beer clubs are great!
Parking is a little difficult if it’s busy, but that’s literally the only negative I can think of.

It’s a fairly typical liquor store. They have a nice variety of liquors and wines. They have a sputnik thing design on the outside which is unique.
The real winners are the staff! They are always friendly and volunteer to help you find anything. You can’t go wrong here. The prices are fairly typical.

Tons of options in all price ranges. What really makes this place nice (in addition to the awesome unmistakeable sign) is the customer service. I went in here wanting to try a new wine but didn’t know my wines well. A member of staff was more than happy to walk me around and show me different wines that fit the description of the taste I was looking for in different price ranges. Not once did he make me feel like a horses ass for coming into a wine store with little knowledge about wine. :)
This is why I won’t vote for wine being sold in grocery stores. I feel like it’ll negatively impact places like this. :(you won’t get quality selection and this kind of service at walmart.

Joe’s staff are totally pleasant, knowledgable, and AMAZING! They are patient with you in finding exactly what you want and need. There’s nothing negative to write! Every time I go inside, I’m greeted and asked how my family is doing.

I was looking for a specialty whiskey and called ahead to see if they had it. They did and I was very excited. The employee told me that they close the store at 11 so I raced across Tennessee trying to make it on time. I arrived at 10:30 and they had closed already

Couldn’t leave Tennessee without getting some Jack Daniels and ended up leaving with some delicious moonshine as well based on one of the clerks recommendations. They have a good selection with decent prices.

I have gone here 5 times in the last year yet never bought anything. Each time, I keep hoping to find something different, something cheaper, something unique. But every time I leave disappointed.
It’s fine if a truly superior bottleshop wants to charge higher-​than average prices. You pay for the selection or for the service. Unfortunately, Joe’s offerings are identical to Buster’s or Yorkshire’s but at significantly higher prices. Is there some kind of Midtown premium they’re charging? I’ve looked up and down the aisles in a vain hope they’d have something different, but I just can’t find anything that I couldn’t get for cheaper elsewhere.
I’ve also never had someone come over to talk to me as I peruse the beer selection – not that it’s necessary, but it’s always nice have happen and the other places in town do so. I just wish that they’d offer something that would make them stand out since as it stands there’s not much going on here other than the cool sign.

I dragged the boyfriend here because I didn’t want to drive back across town to go to Buster’s. It looks kinda sketchy from the outside, but the inside is super nice! I was pretty shocked when we walked in and were promptly greeted by several employees. We asked for a particular brand of vodka, were directed to it, paid up, and headed home. Granted, the price was $ 5 higher than at Buster’s, but at least they had it, knew about it, and are much closer to our house!
I’ll definitely stop in here next time we have a liquor emergency… to heck with Kimbrough!

I want to go to there.
The first time I visited Memphis I drove past the hypnotic spinning sign in front of Joe’s, I was drawn like a giant Belgian beer-​loving moth. This moth was not disappointed.
The super helpful non-​annoying staff will gladly answer questions and offer suggestions, they have an expert for everything.
I stared at the beer selection for some time. They have a good variety of hard to find micros and really know their stuff.

The staff at Joe’s are strangely fixed on making sure you know what you’re doing. Whether it’s explaining what Amaretto is, or recommending a not-​so-​well-​known cocktail that can be made with the bottle you’re buying, they’re always so happy to help you.
The inside is well-​organized, and they have a fine selection of wines and spirits. They have a super varying selection of Absolut, which is a favorite for flavored vodkas.

Hell to the yes! Just seeing the sputnik outside makes me happy. We used to affectionately refer to Joe’s as «The Jetson’s Liquor Store» Haha.
They have a huge selection of wines, from cheap to tax return splurge, every liquor I ever went in there looking for, and plenty of champagne/​cava/​prosecco. They have a whole isle of IPA beers too. I like how they label which wines are organic (nerdalert) and I never felt judged if I wanted to look at nicer wines than I could really afford. They have a gigantic assortment and the staff is happy to help you make a selection, or even just help you reach it off the top shelf.
