Memphis Photo Supply

Before I moved, I used to buy film from these guys all the time. Went in today, and stock was very sparse. I hope they’re able to stick around; if they go, that means no dedicated camera shops in Memphis.

I had a really great experience here. My husband is a bit of an amateur photographer so I’ve bought him a 35 millimeter and a digital camera from here.
The salesman was very informative and patient– didn’t mind at all answering the many questions that I asked while trying to make the perfect choice. He asked alot of questions, too, such as photograph subjects, most important camera needs, equipment needs. I didn’t feel as though he was trying to sell me any add-​ons– he was just genuinely trying to help me pick the perfect camera for my husband.
They have many options in stock, as well as a large inventory of equipment that professional photographers might need. You can even find frames here.
I’ll always go back to Memphis Photo Supply for my photography needs.

Open since 1906, Memphis Photo Supply sells cameras for newbies and seasoned photography veterans. Giotto tripods, Manfrotto equipment, Minox, and Nikon cameras. There were variously-​priced camera bags and LFI Magazines. A small selection of frames is offered as well. In the back room you can find lighting equipment and other supplies.

This place is pretty neat. I’ve been here twice now. Once I needed to try and get a battery for my camera and a strap. The strap was a non-​issue. The guy even put it on my camera for me and replaced some of the old rings, he just took forever to do it… I was on a strict time schedule that day, so I barely made it to my other destination on time.
I also can note that if you have some kind of particularly old cameras, they may not have an alternative replacement for your battery. For example, mine is a TL-​Electro Yashica, manual camera. They didn’t carry the battery I needed so I had to special order it from elsewhere.
They also don’t carry the cheaper brand of paper and black and white film known as Kentmere. They do have a better quality, more expensive brand called Ilford.
One great bonus about this place is that service is very good. If you walk around looking lost or walk straight up to the register, they usually are more than willing to help you. They also know their stuff. The people here are nice. And for photo students in school, it gives a discount.

Nice guys, but their negative scanner is terrible. The machine can’t handle underexposed shots and gives you terrible bright white grain in dark areas of the image. Also its JPG only, no TIFs, no RAW. Go to MIP (Memphis Professional Imaging), its better and even cheaper per roll!

A great place to shop if you like your salesperson to know what they’re talking about. These guys have been around and they know photography. New or used. They don’t carry Canon though. Ask for Buzzy or Dirk.
