Welcome to Jantz! We offer a variety of pastries and pies to enjoy with our locally roasted freshly brewed coffee or espresso. In the morning we have a breakfast menu that includes a long time favorite ‘cinnamon swirl french toast’ from our bakery. For lunch and dinner we have a variety of hot and cold sandwiches including our best seller since 2001, the chicken salad sandwich! We also offer free WiFi and an outdoor patio.

History

Established in 2001.

Jantz Café & Bakery was established in Atwater, CA in May of 2001 by the Jantz family. It has continued to grow in the last 12 years. In Nov. of 2009, we opened our second location in the little mountain community of Mariposa, CA. Then in Feb. of 2013, we opened our third location here in the El Portal Plaza in Merced, CA.

Although I would love to see more 5-​star reviews, the occasional 1-​star review is also beneficial, since it shows us what we need to work on. We try very hard to give a consistent guest experience, but we always have some area that we can improve in! Thank you so much for letting us know how you feel! This place is delicious! I appreciate their attentiveness as well as accommodation to our large group. They were kind enough to add egg to my side salad order. I am a huge lover of whipped cream and would say how it is not the best I’ve had, but it’s definitely delicious. The banana pie is rich but I wish they would add more banana in it.

Excellent, fresh and tasty food! Great service, clean and attractive venue. Loved the breakfast burrito! Will come again! Great value, too. They’ve been busy every time we’ve been there, which makes for a bit of a wait, but not bad at all!

They have a great and very friendly staff. They are helpful and patient. We walked in and ordered to go, although the food did take a while to get it was sure worth the wait. I got the bbq roast beef and my fiancé got a tuna melt and we both loved them. We’ll be back!

The café is one of the cleanest restaurants I’ve ever entered. Our server was super friendly! I order ordered the veggie sandwich and baked potato soup. Everything was very fresh and the portions are satisfying. On Wednesdays they give a free slice of pie with the purchase of a meal so I ordered the coconut crème pie. That pie was honestly the best pie I’ve ever had! I gave this place five stars because of that pie. The crust is flaky and crispy, the filling is sweet to perfection. It was truly heavenly!!! I couldn’t even.

Had such a great experience. The food was true to their mission statement: «…by serving homemade quality food…». The toast eggs and coffee were great. The décor as well made the overall experience very comfy and pleasant. The service alone has me excited to go back.

Very very fresh food!
Well for Merced that is!
Service is good here and their foods very good
I had the all meat omelet scrabble and it was so well cooked, not to wet and not to dry just perfectly cooked to perfection
My partner had the pancakes and it was good as well
The pumpkin bread is to die for and the banana bread was full of moisture and so well baked
This place is a good breakfast place to go to if you are looking for fresh good breakfast
Service is very good too!!! And this place is clean!!!

I come to jantz atleast once a week. This time I phone ordered and once I got home noticed my boyfriend and I only got half of our sandwiches. I then called them and they told us to come back to pay for the second half to get the other half of our sandwiches. Atleast do something for the trouble it took to drive all the way back to your restaurant. I won’t be coming back for a while.

Came to Merced for an imaging appointment and saw this small café which on the outside looks quite good. So, we came in since we haven’t had any breakfast yet. Whilst inside, nobody greeted us or anything and people were already sitting and some were on the counters ordering, so we thought we should order at the counter too. And we did and we sat down near a window and a girl who was waiting tables came to us and asked if we were ready to order, my husband responded that we already did and the girl scolded us that we shouldn’t have done that. Oh well.
After that she gave us a glass of water and never did once asked us if we were okay, if the food was fine, etc. It’s a bit annoying because the table beside us, the girl kept checking on them every few minutes and she never did once took a glance at us.
And I find that very degrading too, since she’s not going to get a tip anymore or whatever. But still, we’re customers too.
Your café is cute and I like the ambience, but, please maybe next time, especially for first timers, put at least a sign like «Please take a seat.»

Jantz Café is a super cute small and friendly restaurant.
All the cheese’s they use in their food come from local farms nearby. Their coffee is local as well!
The food is always delicious. The Cinnamon French Toast is super delicious! It taste just like a cinnamon roll but much lighter and fluffy.
The macaroni salad they serve is also super super good! Normally I don’t like macaroni salad but the one here is super light and it doesn’t have an over powering amount of mayo.
The breakfast items as well with lunch and dinner is all super delicious. The prices are very reasonable as well. They also have a student menu.
The desserts are great as well. They have a variety of pies, cakes, and cookies. If you check in Monday — Friday from 5 – 8 you can get a free slices of pie!

I came with my friends after a long day of classes, and left disappointed. The food was sub-​par, and it didn’t fill me up for the price I was paying. Service was atrocious, and for that reason I will never come back to this establishment.
There are much better and cheaper places to go for sandwiches and burgers in Merced. This place is absolutely not one of them.

I have been wanting to try this place. And must say that they are some of the genuine and nicest people I’ve met in my travels.
They customized my sandwich to a lettuce wrap as I’m watching the carb intake…
Hubby on the other hand isn’t watching his carbs and has some yummy cookies to look forward to…
I got the peanut butter, oatmeal and sugar cookies… Just by the yummy smell I know he will love them.
I ordered a almond milk latte for the ride home. And it was done just right…

What a terrible first experience I had here.
First off, the employees working here are terribly rude as if they can’t show a smile.
It was my first time here so I was not sure on how the seating arrangement worked out. There was no one greeting us at the door and people seemed to just be waking in.
We decided to walk in and sit ourselves at a table since there wasn’t much help from anyone else. We got told multiple times that we weren’t supposed to be doing that and I apologized many times to different employees. It felt like I was being scolded by my mother or something. Seriously ridiculous… Especially after I apologized for this being my first time visiting their restaurant.
They messed up my friends order by giving her a brownie instead of the fruit bowl she ordered. The food I ordered was average. I had ordered a drink with my food but they seemed to forget that too. They need to have someone at all times to greet customers when they walk in.
I will not be returning here anytime soon and I will be letting others know not to visit here as well. Barley deserves the one star I gave it.

Both the tri tip sandwich and the chicken salad sandwich are great! The raspberry iced tea is very tasty. The macaroni salad is bland — maybe with some mustard would be better. The cheeseburger chowder soup needs more salt.

Based on today’s visit:
BLT: lots of bread and little mayo. The bacon was very crisp, which is how I like it. But I left a lot of bread over.
Side Salad: not bad. Lettuce was a little sad but the thousand island was wonderful and flavorful. I actually used the remaining on my BLT since it was greatly lacking mayo.
Strawberry Pie: thank you Janz, this is what I wanted and needed. So tasty, pretty fresh, just the right amount of sweet. The crust is okay, I think the texture is not what I was thinking it would be.
