Tschudin Chocolates

Thanks for your response. The date I wrote the review is not the same date I was in your store. I am actually a very easy going person and enjoy many, many places I go to. I only give negative critiques to the few places over a few years that I really hated. The reason I used hate for your place was described, but I did enjoy the chocolate itself, which is really the most important. I also would suggest that you have two separate chocolate cases, one for the high end with high end ingredients and the other case for average people and college kids who may not want to pay such a high price or care that the best products are being used. This way you will cater to all groups, not just the group willing to pay the higher price.
I mentioned the money because my husband is a tax accountant and the first rule of going somewhere is that if they don’t ring it up, then it’s a non-​sale and the Gov’t gets cheated on the income. It also looked very awkward and unsanitary going in to get change.
I wish you no harm and much luck. It looks like a fun but hard business to be in. Yes, I found your talking to be annoying, but hey, it’s your store. I would actually come in again if you had more choices in the mid range of prices. Otherwise I’ll go to other chocolate stores where I pay as an example $ 2 per piece instead of $ 4 per piece. To some people the price outweighs the taste. To others they are willing to pay a higher price. Again, it’s Middletown and most people there are working class not high society. Good luck to you.

We happened to be in Middletown for dinner and went in around closing time on a Friday night. The owner was very friendly and was very detailed when introducing every piece of chocolate we picked. We had three: heart felt hope, amici’s, and a night in Tunisia (named Tunisia but shaped like a Singaporean Merlion.). All were pretty good. We especially liked heart felt hope and amici’s. The chocolates were objectively a little expensive, but personally I think some self-​indulgence once in a while on such fine pieces of art is acceptable; plus, it’s not as if one has to buy hundreds of them in batches each time.

What a fabulous place. Fantastic hand made chocolates. The owner is supper friendly. While we were there a gentleman came in looking for a seafood restaurant. The owner pulled out a map, marked several restaurants on the map and the went outside to provide both verbal and visual directions. Great chocolates and great service. Definitely worth a stop!!!

My husband and I wandered in about an hour before close, after having dinner at Phở 170. There was a family ahead of us so we waited a moment and looked around. It’s a small store with 2 cute glass displays of a variety of different chocolates. The floors were clean and the glass looked pretty clean considering it was the end of the night.
The owner of the store was the man behind the counter and he is a one of a kind, genuine, bubbly, very nice person. We all chatted while choosing our chocolates about Prince and the SNL special that was airing a little later tonight. In the conversation I mentioned that my phone had died, otherwise I would look up the start time and BOOM, he pulls out a charging cable and hooks my phone up! Thank you!
My husband and I sat down with our chocolates to enjoy while my phone was recovering and I have to say I had the freshest, most delicious chocolate covered strawberry of my life! Everything was delicious!
While my hubby and I were chatting and tasting our chocolates a father came in with his daughters and I overheard that one of the girls wanted a chocolate covered strawberry. The owner suggested that if the strawberries in the case were too large for her, he would bring out some smaller ones and the girls could dip their own! How fun! I am very impressed, I know my own children would be awestruck at an opportunity to dip their own strawberries!
I was able to grab 2 or 3 pics before my phone died and will add them to my review. 5 stars to the chocolatier who obviously enjoys what he’s doing and loves people!

The chocolate was excellent and the owner was very friendly and helpful. Will definitely come back next time we’re in Middletown!

Leave your career to open a chocolate shop? You would have to be crazy,
right?! That’s what the owner of this store did. If you ask me, he made a great decision! I don’t know what I would do without my little fix.
I’ve been here a handful of times, over the last couple of years. Each time, I was greeted with a smile and friendly conversation.
These chocolates are not your standard candy store variety. You won’t find packaged «brand name» candy here. Here, you will introduce your tastebuds to a chocolate like no other.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Tell the owner what your likes and dislikes are. He will gladly assemble the perfect assortment, from his hand-​made artisanal chocolates for you.
I’ve had the pleasure of presenting a few of these assortments as gifts to friends. I was told on more than one occasion, that it was the best chocolate that they had ever had. I have never been disappointed with my purchases at Tschudin. But, when has chocolate ever let anyone down?

Did not go in– boyfriend did and states it was a small place. I can only rate as to chocolate quality. Not bad, not great. Chocolate almond bark should have almonds IN the chocolate not just sprinkled on top. That was a bummer– the choc covered marshmallows were pretty good! Personal preference of course– but not a huge fan of this particular choc. Texture/​flavor. Thanks for the response, will do! :-)

I WILL DEFINITELY BE BACK!!! Delicious chocolate, fair prices for such a labor intensive art, and better than fantastic service. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!

My boyfriend and I were walking around Middletown for the first time when we came across this heavenly place! We went in just for a peek, but ended up staying there for three hours! The owner is a kind, fun, and knowledgeable and gentleman. When he offered us the opportunity to help him make some chocolates, we immediately cleared our schedule. Not only did we have an amazing experience, but we met someone that was really passionate about what he did, and shared it with the community.
For those of you that love a chocolate experience; this is the place for you! For those thinking about your wallet; try opening your mind to what goes into making these little drops of heaven. If you really love chocolate and appreciate them as much as we do, the price won’t matter. Every hint of spice and exotic flavor can take you to a different place and time. They are really something special that can be truly pleasurable if you slow down and forget the world for just a minute.
Middletown is so lucky to have Tschudin Chocolates, They are honestly a gift to the community.

Great little chocolate shop with exceptionally good chocolate and ice cream. The chocolate ice cream is the best I’ve ever had and is undoubtedly made on site (two ice cream makers sitting on the counter). Yes, it’s expensive. Have the people giving negative reviews due to price ever been to a boutique chocolate shop before? It’s EXPENSIVE. If you want cheap, go buy a candy bar at the gas station.
The owner was a very nice and knowledgeable man that went into great depth explaining his products and processes. I had no idea making chocolate was so complicated. We were acknowledged as soon as we walked in the door even though he was busy with other customers. Yes, the retail area is cluttered with seemingly random items… but who cares? There’s a slot machine and an organ, a large picture of an oriental market, and fridge full of what looked like random local farm items… none of which interfered with my ability to enjoy my ice cream and converse with the owner. I went to have good dessert, not be wowed by someone’s interior decorating skills. It has a mad scientist/​eccentric genius vibe to it.

After walking back from a lovely dinner at First and Last Tavern, my boyfriend and I decided to stop in here to check out their chocolates. I have a bit of a sweet tooth for salted caramel chocolates and was excited to see they had some. The girl behind the counter had this awful colored hair and a disengaged attitude. I was waiting for her to ask if I needed help. It was my first time there so I had no idea if it was self serve or what. I asked if I could try one of the salted caramels and she provided me with one. They were really good so I asked for 7. It cost me EIGHTEEN DOLLARS for SEVEN chocolates. I was so shocked I paid and walked out.

Tschudin’s is always on my list of places to go when I’m in Connecticut. I hadn’t been back in nearly two years, so when we had lunch nearby, I jumped at the opportunity to stop by.
FOOD (⁵⁄₅): Their chocolates are delicious. I haven’t had one that I didn’t like. We also ordered their homemade hot chocolate, and it was worth it. Yes, the chocolate is more on the expensive side, but we’re not talking about Godiva. This is all house-​made. We got a variety of chocolates, and the only one I second-​guessed buying was the almond bark, but the quality was definitely much better than in a Hershey’s bar. Next time, I’ll stick more to their smaller bites.
SERVICE (⁵⁄₅): The owner helped us out, and he was so nice. He spent some time talking to my husband about music as he made our hot chocolates. As new customers came in, he greeted them. He spent so much time focusing on detail, catching a rip on my friend’s gift box and promptly swapping it out for another.
ATMOSPHERE (⁴⁄₅): It is a little cramped if there’s a crowd. However, I don’t think chocolate is one of those things that requires you to sit around and eat like a meal in a restaurant. We took our chocolates to go, but they do put them on a platter if you are eating them there. There’s just one table. I won’t hold it against them though. I could devour these morsels without sitting down.
Tschudins is a must visit in Middletown. I’ll definitely be back.

So I was strolling down Main Street in Middletown with my girlfriend after eating dinner at Mondo Pizza and noticed that Tschudin Chocolates was still open. We stopped in and selected 6 small pieces of chocolate with a milk hazelnut center. This ended up costing just under $ 15.00. While it was very good chocolate, I don’t think I’d spend that much again.

Walked into Tschudin this afternoon this afternoon… and promptly walked out. The girl at the counter started with a speech about how their chocolates are more expensive but they’re worth it. Generally, if you’re greeting people with an apology or an excuse for your prices, there is a problem.
On top of that, the store was less than half filled with food items, and the other half was filled with what looked like remnants from a flea market. A taco themed slot machine, an old piano, outdoor chairs, storage bins, and other random crap all taking up a good portion of the tiny shop. The shop is a cluttered, filthy mess… and they want me to pay $ 2.25 each for mini baby chocolates? I think not…
Maybe the owner should take some of his junk home, or rent a storage unit for it. Add some tables inside (that aren’t covered in dusty old junk) so that customers could actually sit down and enjoy a snack. Since Sweet Genius didn’t work out so well, maybe the owner can get on an episode of Hoarders next…

I wandered in the store with my boyfriend after getting lunch in Middletown. The owner is a real character, a non stop chatter box — but in a good way.
I can’t wait for him to make me some European hot coco. Dark chocolate and thick.

I am never disappointed when I visit Rob and Tschudin Chocolates.
Recently, for the holiday season, the stores hours have changed. The shop is closed the first couple of days of the week. However, Rob’s number is listed on the door saying that should you want to purchase something you can call or text him and see if he is either in the back of the shop working or if he can swing by and serve you.
Twice I have brought out of town friends and family in and we have had our own surprise nearly private chocolate experience. From tasting some sweets to dipping our own Moussicles (chocolate dipped frozen mousse), Rob makes stopping into the store an experience every time.
My husband and I always buy a few pieces of the «Night in Tunisia» chocolate. It is the double first place winner in the shop made with red pepper and fenugreek and cumin. It is the best chocolate I’ve ever had!
If you visit downtown Middletown, you have to stop by and and at least get yourself a cup of REAL hot chocolate. You will not be disappointed.

If you are in the mood for an excellent chocolate experience, this tiny shop is perfect. We always visit when in Middletown. The owner is very passionate about his craft and very friendly and welcoming.

Rob’s insight and techniques in his chocolate making class are easily applied and enjoyed at home. He made the experience memorable and fun. We drank champagne and made some new friends. The shop is in a great location surrounded by restaurants and nightlife. We will be longtime customers.

I’ve been here twice and have tried quite a variety of chocolate items. I find myself having a hard time forgetting how much I enjoy the chocolate covered orange peels and the Garam Masala.
I generally leave having spent no less than $ 30, but I tend to get a bit of a haul. I’ll admit that it’s maybe a little too pricey for me, so going forward I will probably stick with the things I know I love.
That being said, I have received nothing but the best customer service at Tschudin — and this includes the handful of high school kids that work here, too. They are always patient and quick to help me find something that will suit my tastes.
I haven’t tried anything other than the chocolate, so I can’t give any feedback regarding their many other treats. I recommend Tschudin on a night (or day) you REALLY want to indulge/​splurge to try something new and inspired.
Keep your mind open, if you’ve ever watched Food Network and wondered how flowers, etc. would taste in chocolate, Tschudin might be your ticket.

We had the copycat cronut today. in nyc dominique ansel made the original and if you are lucky enough to buy one it is $ 5, much larger than the $ 6 tschudin version and filled with french pastry cream and berry filling (flavor changes monthly in nyc)
tschudin version (it was the end of the day) was ok. a bit hard and dry and lacking the expected $ 6 donut amazement.
worth a try — if you have low expectations you may like it. its easier to get to main st middletown than it is to get to the les… i need to get back down to Tschudin soon and see if the fresh one is better.
