Dr. Howard Kornfeld is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Medicine and teaches at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine’s Pain Medical Fellowship Program. Dr. Kornfeld is a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and is board certified in pain, addiction, and emergency medicine.

He maintains a private medical practice in Mill Valley, California, and founded and directs Recovery Without Walls which specializes in the treatment of chronic pain, chemical dependency, prescription medication management issues, and problems with alcohol.

Dr. Kornfeld is a nationally recognized leader in the utilization of the opioid pain medication, buprenorphine (also known as Suboxone or Subutex). He is particularly skilled in the assessment and treatment of opiate and other chemical dependencies, chronic pain and problems with alcohol. He is widely known for his expertise in treating patients with complex benzodiazepine and sleeping pill difficulties.

Following my separation from a 10 year marriage, I sought the counsel of Recovery Without Walls on recommendation from a fine Marin therapist. At Recovery Without Walls, I worked with Inna Zelikman, who crafted a path for me to rise from a dark sad place, back to one of happiness and serenity. I didn’t want the traditional path of SSRI’s and numbing protocols. Instead, Inna got creative and worked with me in a new way, both medically and socially to help me get to a strong place again in my life. I’m truly grateful.

Dr Kornfeld and his staff are some of the most welcoming, knowledgable, and helpful doctors and counselors that I have worked with. They have helped me tremendously through the last 4 years and provided personalized service and encouragement that truly helped me with achieving my treatment goals and beyond. Their office is in a great part of downtown Mill Valley and there is plenty of street parking and coffee and food near by. And their front desk staff are great! I cannot thank them enough!

I was forced by Unilocal to rate Dr. Kornfeld with at least one star, but I would not have given him any if I had my way.
My review differs from the two I just read completely. I went to Dr. Kornfeld for chronic migraine pain, and nothing he gave me, save a valium-​type medication, helped. The valium helped only because it made me not care about the pain as much. But I was on an old, long-​acting benzo drug called librium, which my girlfriend, a nurse, said nobody uses anymore, because it’s so addictive.
Finally, I wanted off the 8 medications that Dr. Kornfeld had me on (on top of the 5 hormone medications I was already taking), because none of them were really doing anything for my pain, and being up and down and all around with all these meds made it increasingly harder to manage my two small boys or have a relationship with them or my husband.
Dr. Kornfeld had me get off the librium so quickly, I had a nervous breakdown which resulted in my being hospitalized. He, of couse, denies any part of this.
I am now seeing a new doctor who helped me get off the librium over a six month period, which was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done. She said it’s easier to get someone off of heroine then off of a benzo like librium. She also said that her peers over the years have nicknamed him «the Drug Dealer,» and just recently she has taken on two new clients of his, with the same exact story of overmedicating. I’ve also met many others throughout and since this ordeal who saw him and had a similar experience. I resorted to going to a women’s AA group to help me come off all the drugs he had me on, and told my story. Several of the women there came up to me afterwards and said they knew of many others who had been through the same experience with this man, and who had ended up in AA telling a similar story.
I think Dr. Kornfeld is reckless and irresponsible, and should have his license to drug people revoked indefinitely.

I started being treated by Dr. Kornfeld almost ten years ago. I had major illnesses that required a tremendous amount of pain medication. The pain meds were destroying my life. But the illnesses demanded I numb the pain to even function at a minor level. I’d been through every known traditional form of pain treatment and was at the point where I’d be in the ER on an average of 2 times a week for intravenous pain relief. I was truly dying a slow death. Finally I was introduced to Dr. Kornfeld and his innovative approach with buprenorphine (Suboxone) helped turn my life around completely. I’m now back on track, better than ever and virtually pain and drug free. It takes time, but it’s worth it!

Dr. Kornfeld is a miracle worker who saved my life! I have been under his care for almost 3 years. Before him my life was a nightmarish existence of chronic pain caused by ovarian cysts and the multiple surgeries I had to remove them which in turn caused severe nerve pain. Other Dr’s kept telling me the cysts could not be causing that much pain and that I was hysterical, overreacting and/​or just trying to get pain pills. I went to countless doctors, even the UCLA pelvic pain clinic, I took out an ovary. I was desperate! No one could help me. I was ready to give up. I could not stand living every day in agony anymore. I had no life.
When I went to see Dr. Kornfeld and his nurse Inna (who understands a lot about women’s issues) they really listened to my story and actually believed it, they didn’t judge me. I was put on a medication regimen that stopped the pain for the first time in years and it didn’t make me feel out of it. I could take it and go to work! Within two weeks I went from a shambling agonized wreck of a human being to the woman I used to be before the pain destroyed me. I have two cysts right now as I write this review that are about 1.5 inches long so far and I am at work every day with very little to no discomfort. I have not had to have any more surgeries either and most importantly I have my life back again. All thanks to Dr. Howard Kornfeld and his staff.

What a scam! I can’t believe what a rip off he is. Watch your pockets and your wallets when you walk through this «doctor’s» doors! He will use the information that you provide him and his staff against you! He should not be in healing and recovery. He is a vulture waiting for the weak.

Dr. Kornfeld is a knowledgeable and caring chronic pain and addiction physician. He’s a great guy and he’s not judgmental. He’s worth going to for help w/​chronic pain and chronic pain meds problems.
