ALS Smog & Repair

$ 40 to smog a 4 cylinder sedan. In and out in less than 10 mins.

Super garage! I was a bit skeptical when I drove up, but the Unilocal reviews were positive so I continued. Turned out this is a great place to have our Jetta fixed. Bing did a first rate job and even gave us a reduced rate to keep it in line with his estimate. Yes I will be going back there when the need arises.

I would strongly recommend ALS Auto Service, 61 Minnis Circle, Milpitas, CA 95 035 for smog check and repair, in particular for older cars with carburetors:
1. Several smog-​certified test and repair facilities, both Star and non-​Star, did not have the equipment to diagnose CO failure. Three of these so-​called certified facilities did not even have operational smog-​testing equipment.
2. Only at ALS was the technician qualified to diagnose and repair carburetor problems, which were a potential cause of CO failure. (I have a 1986 Chrysler 5^th Avenue).
3. I failed the smog test with a CO failure. I brought in the car with an expectation of paying a significant amount of money for diagnosis and repair.
4. The owner was meticulous in specifying what the $ 95 for about an hour of diagnosis would entail. This protected both ALS and the customer.
5. The visual inspection was also done meticulously.
6. A mutual decision was made that a non-​official smog test would be run. Surprisingly, the car passed the smog test (possibly because it had been running for a long period of time and the engine and carburetor had reached maximum heat).
6. A mutual decision was made to run an official smog test. I could have taken the car back to the first facility for a free re-​test, but it was worth the $ 50 to avoid that hassle [and greater possibility of failure for some unknown reason].
7. The official re-​test also fortuitously passed.
8. ALS made a very reasonable adjustment in the $ 95 diagnostic fee since the full planned diagnostic protocol did not occur.
9. The smog technician, Binh Do, went out of his way to fully explain the likely smog failure/​repair issues to me.
10. Both the owner of ALS Auto Service and the smog technician, Binh Do, were very competent and knowledgeable with respect to smog testing and repair. They were very professional in their dealings with me and other customers. And most importantly, they had the opportunity to rip me off with unnecessary diagnoses and repairs, BUT DID NOT.

I was reluctant to write this review as I thought it might make the place too busy, and I’d have to find another smog shop. I realized this was selfish of me, so here it is. This place is fast, efficient, and cheap. They’re also STAR certified. What more can you ask for. Another inside tip… One of the mechanics works on Toyotas on the side.

The guys who work worked on my car, Johnny and Ben, were very friendly and quick. And the $ 40 price was considerably better than another smog place near it.

Super friendly, and quick service. Also, a coolant hose in my engine failed right as I pulled in, and they repaired it with a hose from their supply (and refilled my coolant) before doing the smog check. Definitely coming back here next time.

Went here today to get my car smog done. The service was excellent. They were quick and very reasonably priced. I would recommend them to any of my friends.

Earlier yesterday morning, I actually went to a different shop, but when I got there, they told me that they are not STAR certified, so they cannot do my smog check (I didn’t even know there was a difference). As I wanted to get my car’s smog check done that morning, I quickly looked on Unilocal to find another reliable and decently-​priced shop and found ALS. I called and was told that yes, they are STAR certified and I could directly come there. I was in and out in less than ten minutes and Binh was friendly and efficient. Also, many places I saw on Unilocal were more than $ 50, but I paid $ 40 for the entire process! I am no auto shop/​smog check expert, but I believe I made the right choice coming to ALS :)

I recently changed my battery and immediately went to ALS about an hour after. My smog check was incomplete because all the data restarted. He also visually showed me this on the diagnostic tool. The man advised me to drive my car for a bit longer and come back. Paid 31.75 up front. 10 $ when I comeback plus free retest. Friendly man! Even complimented my hair! I think lol. I have a blue ombré, that starts as a midnight blue and fades into gray/​silver He said «oh, you like purple hair» he looks in the mirror «oh look me too» (he had visible silver hairs). Anyways, there was no wait, friendly service, reasonable price, I’ll be sure to come back.

I only take my cars to ALS. Binh is awesome and his customer service is top notch. He truly cares about his customers. He does so much more than just a smog checks, but is a master of the smog test since he was able to get my CTSC NSX to pass. Honest and will always give the best service. This is what a local auto repair business should be, truthful and no fluff.

The map on Unilocal is misleading. Need to show more details and accuracy. Charge around 40 bucks and done in 10 minutes!

Came to this place late yesterday afternoon for a smog check after striking out with a couple of other places who were either closing or had closed.
Excellent service and equally excellent owners. I was in and out in about 5 minutes. Yes! Not lying! It was because I was the only customer on a Saturday afternoon.
I even ended talking with the male owner, who I assume from a few of the previous reviews is Ed. I told him that his shop was very quiet and he agreed.
I will definitely return here in the future.
Yes, I would highly recommend ALS.

Went in for a smog check. Other places I’ve visited charged $ 60-​$ 70 bucks. I went into ALS and was greeted by Ed. He had me fill out the form and he got started. The process was quick and efficient. Great service and the price was perfect. $ 40 for the smog check. Ed was great. I’ll be coming back here for future smog checks for sure.

They’ve got pretty competitive prices here! I first went to a different smog shop (because Unilocal reviews) but after waiting 10 minutes for the guy to finish his lunch (another patron waiting before me too), luckily I asked him about the prices (which looked ridiculously high compared to this shop!) he told me he won’t be able to smog check my 91 Landcruiser. I went next door and they won’t do it either. So I drove to the other side of town to here, they were able to smog my car. Great & friendly service, and much better pricing. Can’t beat that!

Unethical.
Was buying a used car. Went there to get it smogged and checked. The Mechanic there got curious and started asking questions on how much it was and ended up making an offer and probably bought the car I intended to buy.

Just got my smog checked yesterday. $ 40 bucks. Not a bad deal considering I’ve paid more than $ 60 at other stations. They also do repairs, so that would probably be helpful for those of you who are having trouble passing smog requirements.

This is the worst place I’ve been to. The worker was rude, apathetic and lazy.
He jacked up the price because my car is old and later he flatly refused to do a smog check.
If you want to be treated the same way… go to this place.

I had just earlier gone to a smog check in Mipitas at the corner of Park Victoria and Calaveras. Long story — but that operator tried to cheat me by not honoring his quoted price of $ 55 with a $ 15 off coupon.
