This review is for the ice located in the lowest most level of the building. Having played hockey on every sheet of ice in a three hour driving radius, I can with confidence say, this is the best one in the area. The ice is well maintained and typically very hard. I take every opportunity to get on this ice and skate. The other areas of the buildings look very nice as well, but since I’m an neither a student or work for MSOE, I don’t get to use them.

This is a beautiful facility. Everything is top of the line and kept clean. They host sports teams, have both basketball courts and hockey rinks downstairs. They also invite many local events to use their ample space(Empty Bowls!)

I work at MSOE and my office is pretty much right across the street from the Kern Center, and although it is very convenient for me to go, I still don’t go as much as I would like. But when I do go, I absolutely love it. There are 4 multi use courts for basketball, soccer, and volleyball, as well as an indoor track and ample amount of workout equipment. It can get a little crazy at certain points in the day, with various teams practicing in some spaces and the wight room can get crowded. But overall, I love the Kern Center. Now, if I could only motivate myself to go more often.

What a great space the Kern family along with some Grohmann help built. This facility has nearly everything that a student needs to stay or get fit. I wish this facility was available when I was a student at MSOE. We had Bally’s passes back then, but I always thought the facilities there were creepy. This facility has a significant weight room, 6 treadmills, stationary bikes and spinners, elliptical machines, multiple basketball courts, indoor and outdoor soccer facilities, a 1⁄10th mile track, hockey rink, and significant parking ramp spaces. The only thing it is missing is a pool. Adequate locker rooms, but would have been better if there were more than 2 «private» showers. This event space is also used for a yearly Alumni ice skating event, the WMSE Rockabilly Chili cookoff, and possibly other events. I use this facility for my workouts now that I work downtown, because my company gets a corporate membership. We’ve done fun things as a group such as kickball in one of the indoor soccer practice bays. I would give this facility 5 stars if it had a pool/hot tub/sauna, and if the locker rooms were more secure. I’ve heard of issues with theft, and as such am hesitant to leave anything of value in the lockers. I suppose that happens everywhere, because people suck.

I think I’ve been to the Kern Center 3 times now. 2 Milwaukee Admirals exhibition games and USA Futsal match. They have an amazing gym facility for the MSOE kids and the basketball courts look nice… but I spent most of my time in the dungeon that is the hockey rink in the basement. If I was a millionaire, I’d have a facility like this in my basement. It’s a really cool place(literally and figuratively) to watch a hockey game. I would have probably given it 4 stars but the food offerings are downright terrible, and there is 0 cell phone reception at all.
