Since moving to the Monterey Peninsula in 1993, John Narigi has been busy serving on numerous boards connected to the local tourism and hospitality industry. Joining the Monterey County Hospitality Association and the Monterey Peninsula Visitors and Convention Bureau boards in 1994, he was active in the division of the Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and Monterey Peninsula Visitors and Convention Bureau, and was the 1995 – 96 president of the Monterey Peninsula Convention and Visitors Bureau. He was also recognized by The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences as one of the «Finest Hoteliers» of 2000 and 2001, while the Monterey Plaza Hotel and Spa received the group’s Five Star Diamond Award during those same years. Mr. Narigi sits on the board for Common Ground Monterey County, representing hospitality and the MCHA executive committee, government affairs committee and political action committee. He also serves on the boards of the Monterey Wine Festival Educational Foundation

I booked a trip here for my sisters birthday this past weekend, June 19−20th, for a short one night stay and it was nothing short of amazing!
Laura in reservations, made the booking so easy and was so accommodating with the room I was looking for. She asked if I had any special requests and I mentioned it was a trip for my sisters birthday and she noted it in the computer.
Upon our arrival and check in, they handed us a white envelope with my sisters name on it and inside was a happy birthday letter, with a restaurant voucher inside – the utmost example of going above and beyond for their hotel guests!
Our room wasn’t ready yet, so we walked around Canary Row, a short 3.5 minute walk from the hotel, and conveniently received a text message when our room was ready.
We stayed in a double queen bed, with a balcony and put in a request for a high floor, which we did receive as well (It just seemed like everything we had asked for, the hotel had accommodated us with. I was SO pleased!)
Our room was so clean, and the beds were very comfortable!
The next morning, our check out was very easy; we went up to the main desk with our room keys in the envelope they provided to our room that morning, and got a receipt print out and away we went! The valet service pulled up our car for us and asked us about our stay, again wishing my sister a birthday.
I cannot even begin to elaborate on how amazing this hotel is, and the staff is absolutely incredible.
If you’re looking for a luxurious, relaxing stay in Monterey, this hotel is nothing short of perfect. You get what you pay for and the experience you get from start to finish is special, and very personal! Thank You, Thank You, to the wonderful staff who made my sisters 31st birthday celebration a special one!

My husband and I are currently staying at the Monterey Plaza and overall it’s been a good stay. My biggest complaint has been with the house keeping service. Yesterday, I thought I was losing my mind when I came back and my suitcase was open when I remembered having zipped it closed. Today, I made sure when we left that my suitcase was closed and that we both would remember, and when we came back it was open again! Closed it when we left for dinner, then, after turn down service, it was open again! After experiencing situations with hotels where the house keepers have stolen items, I am extra sensitive to this and see no reason why this should be done!
On top of that, I drank literally 95% of the bottle of water by the bed, while my husband finished his. Came back today and his bottle was replaced and they literally left the half of a sip for me on my side!
Then, I go to take a shower and use the cotton swabs after. Rather than replacing the vanity kit that we had used the cotton swabs out of this morning, they simply put the box back in the tray as we had left it with nothing in it. You’ve got to be kidding me! We are never picky on little things but for the cost of this hotel you would think that something as simple as swapping out a small 2″ box would be automatic.
Overall, it has been a decent stay but if you can’t pay attention to the little things then you shouldn’t be charging so much!

It’s FANCY, first of all. I saw staff wiping dust off the cracks in the banisters and even scrubbing down the pillars outdoors. All the staff are patient and attentive and smile whenever you walk by them. We had lunch and a breakfast buffet. They make a great bran muffin, and their salmon was flaky and delicious.
My king-​size bed was large and comfortable and adorned by poofy pillows. Spa beauty products in the bathroom smelled nice, and the facial bar made my skin glow. The provided bathrobe was plush and luxurious.
I was lucky enough to have an ocean view (binoculars were provided). Sea lions get a little loud at night, but that’s the price you pay for a great view!
I also checked out the gym. No squat racks or bench presses, mostly free weights and cardio machines. They supply yoga mats, but I couldn’t find a designated area for yoga and I ended up just plopping it down in the one empty spot in the whole room. There’s also a steam room, and the ladies’ lounge was stocked with spa products and even a platter of fruit.
Location is great. There’s kayak rentals right down the street, and the aquarium is at the end of the road (a ~10 minute walk).

Onto the review of the hotel:
The hotel itself is beautiful and the location is prime! Everyone from the check in people to the valet were superb. We never had an issue.
I like the fresh fruit in the lobby and the lemon flavored water.
It’s a little pricey, but you get what you pay for!

We really enjoy our stay at the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa. Service is consistent, gracious and we’ve never been disappointed. Like they say. «The devil is in the details.» It’s the little details that make the difference, and why we always stay at this hotel.
We always ask for the same room… with a garden/​patio view. (We love the ocean, but at night the sounds of the waves just keeps us awake!). Our room is always spotlessly clean. The bedding is perfect. Very comfortable mattress with plenty of fluffy pillows. No overpowering air fresher to hide smells. Just a clean refreshed room.
Wifi is excellent. We never turn on the large flat screen television. We just stream our favorite movie sites or listen to Pandora.
On site restaurant, Schooners is an excellent choice for any meal or room service. Room service is surprisingly fast, friendly and efficient. (The food is very very good!).
Our personal experiences at the on site Spa have only been good ones, and we use the Spa facilities every time we come here! Very clean! I always manage to buy something for a friend or myself from the Spa boutique!
Highly recommend this hotel for a refreshing break in the daily grind!

We absolutely loved our stay at this hotel! Very comfy beds. We had a room overlooking the bay and fell to sleep with the sound of the waves crashing into the seawall.
Dinner at onsite steakhouse/​bar was excellent with a great deck that has gas heaters.
Pricey but worth every penny. Wish we could have availed ourselves of the spa services that the hotel offers. Very close to everything.

We just stayed here last weekend. Ended up getting a groupon deal! It was gorgeous! I love that valet parking is included with your stay, although there is a resort fee of $ 27. We didn’t get to dine at their Schooners restaurant overlooking the ocean but it was beautiful! Ended up picking breakfast at café la strada and their panini breakfast sandwiches were really yummy as well as their blended coffee. This hotel is not in the heart of cannery row but it’s literally a 2 – 3 min walk from where cannery row begins. Highly recommend this hotel! Definitely would return!

Omg fabulous! If you want to be treated like a VIP instead of the average schmo, stay here! We stopped in to check out the hotel and ended up booking 3 nights there. The staff is sooooo friendly! No matter who we came in contact with, they treated us very well! The rooms all have gorgeous furniture and appointments not to mention a fridge and safe. The bathrooms are gorgeous! They have awesome amenities as well. Large closet! The best part is that the common area seating is just gorgeous. There’s a fireplace with comfy couches and chairs in front along with leather chairs that are so comfy as well! There’s an outdoor fire pit which is a great touch! Schooners restaurant is part of this hotel and though I haven’t eaten there yet, I did check out the menus and they look tremendous! Indoor and outdoor seating so it’s your choice! There’s a spa and workout center upstairs along with a hot tub and gift shop. Michelle helped us at the front desk and she was super nice! A++++!!!

Booked this place last minute on a busy weekend. They were very accommodating to a last minute request but weirdly my card wouldn’t work over the phone (probably my bank). Stayed here on a Saturday evening and it’s lovely! Room was good, didn’t get an ocean view but they have some and I loved the mini balconies– perfect for morning coffee. Rooftop hot tub and spa with lounge fireplace was to die for! Good location– easy walk to the pier, aquarium and shops/​restaurants.

I just returned from a three night stay, and wish we never had to leave! It is pricey, though. The hotel is beautiful, the lounge area spacious, the views are amazing. We had an inland view to save money, but the common areas are awesome.
Our room was comfortable in every way, even though I requested hypoallergenic bedding. Two queen beds were perfect for my family with two small kids. The staff goes out of their way to say hello, which is much appreciated when I was at a conference early in the morning. Alexander, the concierge, insisted that I take my five year old to the Dennis the Menace park, and even drove us in the hotel shuttle when I hesitated to get my car from the valet.
The hotel room was not ready when promised, but I hardly noticed. They held our bags and kept breast milk for my baby in the freezer. Then, they somehow found a mini-​fridge with a freezer for our room after telling us they were out. Even when this was the case, they offered to keep the milk down stairs and bring it up as we needed it, which is very kind.

My son and I had the most wonderful stay here for his Spring Break and my vacation. Great 5 star customer service, clean beautiful rooms, and prefect Monterey Bay location! It’s a short walk to shops, restaurants, spectacular views of the bay and the famous aquarium. We ordered room service from Schooners and it was delicious! The beds were comfy and the room was spacious and perfect!!! The day we left dolphins were swimming right outside our room. the binoculars came in handy. What can I say, I didn’t wanna come home! You definitely get what you pay for! Great hotel! Would love to come back!

A very nice hotel, perfectly located by the sea.
The room had a beautiful ocean view.
We only stayed for one night. This was absolutely not because of the hotel. More because of Monterey itself, it seemed like a nice place for old people.
We had dinner at the hotel, and I had the best Mahi Mahi.
Fantastic robes, crowded spa and super comfy, huge bed.
Overall a good (and pricey) stay.

The pluses:
1. Gorgeous views (extra $ 100 for full ocean view it worth it)

6. The lobby has a piano that plays automatic music.
7. Rad work out facility overlooking ocean
Now low star reasoning:
1. Renovations & Guidance– Expensive and with renovations there was little direction throughout the hotel, we used the service elevator to get to our rooms which I would like to call GYRO since it is etched in the elevator doors.
2. Restuarant reservations– We called the hotel Restuarant Schooners two times for reservations at 7 and no one answered, then we called operator to help us and received a phone call five minutes later. (Dinner was delightful.)
3. In-​room movie– Tried to order a movie and the tv said «this room is not occupied». We had to call the front desk to connect the movie watching to our tv.
3. Cleaning of the room– We left at 8:30 in the morning and returned at two pm to find our rooms had not been cleaned.
4. spa — disappointing [but I have been blessed to experience some amazing spas: Casa Palmero, refuge, Mandalay bay, four seasons, grand waialaya]
A. The lockers are small and close to one another, there is minimal room to change for multiple people.
B. The 2 showers when i went were dirty.
C. Early afternoon the front desk said even though we were staying at the hotel there were no lockers unless you receive a service. They then said we could share one small locker which we did.
D. The 2 hot tubs outside are nice but there’s no towel rack for guests… you need to get them from the lounge chairs if they have them or inside.
E. The steam room is made for two –super small.
F. We ordered drinks and thirty minutes later ended up cancelling the order because we asked and they said it would be another 10 minutes. When ordering drinks at the spa they charge a $ 3 delivery fee and add 18% gratuity to the check.
All in all, if money is no issue stay here because the views and the sounds of the waves crashing are spectacular! The spa is sad but again the views are unforgettable and hot tub overlooking the ocean yes it’s one of those experiences thats a treat!

Oh where do we start (and not in a good way.)
We were totally misled by the seemingly beautiful pictures of the hotel. On arrival, our room turned out to be NOT as ‘beautiful’ and honestly a bit rundown. The carpets clearly needed a change and ambience fell way below the expectations of a 4 star hotel.
Also, while we were away from our room for dinner, something really gross got accumulated in the bathtub. On contacting the front-​desk, we were put on hold for 20 min and finally transferred to another room in the middle of the night without even a simple apology for the inconvenience.
On bringing the issue up during the checkout, the receptionist spoke to her manager, offered a just a $ 40 credit (why even give that?). After spending $ 700+ (room, aquarium tickets, spa facilities and a dinner) we were thoroughly disappointed by the services offered at Monterey Plaza hotel.
We **DO NOT** recommend this hotel at all, there are much better alternatives at this price. The only redeeming factor (if any) seemed to be the Spa facilities.

Stay here. It has a convenient location by the beach, minutes from the aquarium and the Fisherman’s Warf, and a cordial staff.
Try to book your room as early as possible and ask for a room with a harbor view – it’s definitely worth the extra price. Speaking of price, it’s not mentioned clearly, but your parking fee is included in the resort fee, so drive in and valet.
They have a diner inside the hotel, if you do plan to dine here, call the front desk and request a reservation; otherwise, you won’t get a beachfront seat (the food is alright, so don’t have too high of expectations going in).
The little binoculars included with each room is a great touch, wake up early in the morning and try to find the cute otters playing in the kelp; they are a bit hard to find, but they’re definitely there so keep looking.
Last time I was there they had a construction and some parts of the lobby was closed down, I wish I knew about this before going in or before getting my reservations.

Gorgeous is an understatement for this hotel. It’s better than most hotels we’ve stayed at.
Service is exceptional. They are on another level. Not only did they treat us wonderfully but everyone from the valet guys to the front desk were so exceptionally sweet to our kids.
We came with two small children. Our room had two queen beds, a small area outside the room that they could look outside. Our view was of cannery row. Kids don’t care about views.
There’s a small little beach right next to the hotel. We spent two afternoons there. In October the fog clears around 2pm. My son ran and played and went exploring most of the afternoon.
While this place is expensive, it’s in a great location. We were within walking distance of some excellent, family friendly restaurants. On our last day we went to the aquarium. We walked there and back with ease.
If it’s in your budget, bring the family here for your Monterey adventures.

Located on Cannery Row in Monterey is this beautiful hotel. With lovely ocean views and close proximity to all the fun shopping and restaurants, this is a great place to stay when visiting Monterey.
We only had the chance to stay here one night because the hotel was fully booked on our second night in Monterey. We were fortunate enough to book a big room with a pretty ocean view. It was really nice to come back and look out at the ocean during breaks from shopping and the aquarium.
Our reservation also included a special package that had tickets for the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It was great getting our tickets ahead of time because we avoided those super long lines to buy tickets once we got there. It saved us quite the hassle at the ticket counter the next day.
We liked having several restaurants on the property as well. On our first night in Monterey, we were able to enjoy a quiet dinner (and beautiful sunset) at Schooners Coastal Kitchen and Bar. My husband was also able to pick up some coffee and delicious pastries at Café La Strada that next morning. This was really convenient!
The customer service was good here, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa. The ocean views were amazing, and it was wonderful having great restaurants here as well. We really look forward to coming back and staying here on our next trip to Monterey!

My wife and I were in the Bay area of the west coast to celebrate our 25th anniversary. We dedicated a night a day to spend in Monterey, CA. My nephew gifted us with a night at this incredible hotel, It was absolutely first class all the way from the minute we checked in until we checked out the next day.
When we pulled up to the lobby, we were immediately greeted by hotel staff who offered to handle our luggage. They also asked our names so they could start the pre-​check-​in process. As we were checking in, our luggage disappeared and was taken up to our room. It was there when we arrived along with a full ice bucket of ice and bottles of water.
Our room looked out on the Monterey Bay. The room even came supplied with a pair of Bushnell binoculars for sightseeing. An extra plus was the room’s windows could be cracked open so we could enjoy the sea breeze and the sounds of the waves.
Our bed and room amenities were all wonderful. My wife and I enjoyed a very sound night’s sleep. Checking out was so quick, our bill was already pre-​prepared. We can’t wait to return to Monterey again sometime in the future and we will definitely stay at the Monterey Plaza Hotel.

Gros hôtel très agréable sur Cannery Row (enfin c’est un peu triché car c’est tout au bout de Cannery Row, pas dans la partie animée, mais ce n’est pas plus mal). D’un côté la rue, de l’autre la mer: les terrasses sur lesquelles on prend un verre ou son repas sont super, les chambres sont grandes et agréables même si la déco n’échappe pas au standard américain à base de brun et d’orange années 90 (je suis gentil, je né dis pas 70). Je préfère le moderne…
Valet parking très pratique, mais prévoyez 5 à 10 minutes de délai pour récupérer votre voiture, car les chasseurs doivent aller la récupérer dans un parking voisin.
Prix élevés mais assez justifiés par le standing des lieux… et la baie à portée de main.
