SummerWinds Nursery -Mountain View

After a day long adventure in Ikea, I was inspired to get a plant for my room and to revive that old window planter I had sitting off my sill empty since I moved in to my apartment in San Francisco.
I made a beeline to the Home Depot only to be met with a disappointing selection of plants and shrubs, but surprisingly, also a pineapple tree. After evaluating my circumstances and deciding that a pineapple tree would not be a suitable houseplant for my room in San Francisco, I decided to hop on Unilocal for some plant inspiration. In comes Summerwinds Nursery. While I have been accused of being dramatic in the past, I do not hesitate to say that Summerwinds was the answer to all my plant-​related dreams (that I had just formed an hour or two beforehand at this point.)
Summerwinds has a great selection of both indoor and outdoor plants (trees, shrubs, and flowers alike), as well as wonderful staff who helped answer all of my first-​time-​plant-​owner questions. I ended up purchasing a beautiful maiden hair fern, some anemones, and some white flowers, labelled only as «white vintages.» So far so good with the plants — they’ve all be thriving despite some heavy rains. I would definitely come back to add more life to my room and would definitely recommend Summerwinds for anyone looking to add some greenery to their home!

For those living in Mountain View, this nursery is a great place to find apartment-​friendly plants. I do my own research before going plant shopping, but the clerks have been helpful when I needed them.

Gary was so helpful to a newbie who wanted to get something easy to grow in the office. He took into account my preferences and gave so many options without any pressure. He answered all my questions thoroughly and knowledgeably, and offered so many additional tips and information.
This place is huge and beautiful. Everything looks well-​cared for.

A terrible experience. We bought six plants there, two on special order. When we came to pick the two up on special order, the clerk Alissa rang us up after doing a thorough search that we’d paid. Fast forward a few months, the plants died. We bring them back, the same clerk Alissa — who acknowledged ringing us up on the special order before — says she can’t help us since we no longer have the receipt and she can’t look up our purchase by credit card. She also told us that she’d normally tell customers without receipts that ‘they can leave’ but would try to help us out. We were gobsmacked. Her boss Joe overheard and agreed to give us one plant but I can assure you we are never going back. We’d already been there twice on the same order and the clerk said she specifically remembered checking us out on the two special order plants. It was appalling treatment after spending hundreds of dollars there.

Summer winds is great. They have a good collection of plants and the people who work there are very helpful. It is all arranged so well it seems like such a peaceful and beautiful place. Definitely the place you want to visit if you want to buy some plants.

This nursery has a lot of variety of indoor and outdoor flowers, plants, fruit trees, pots, etc. The staff here are very knowledgeable and friendly.

These folks are great. Very helpful. Good plant selection, yes, better than HD of course.

I’ve only been here once, but my experience was good. I don’t really know anything about plants, but the people seemed friendly. Their selection is very wide, way better than Home Depot

What a wonderful experience I had with this business. I tried one other SummerWinds Nursery location which was closer to my house but they have a limited inventory and mediocre customer support. In contrast this location provides a much more diverse selection of plants and their customer support is excellent. I asked so many questions from one of their employees (unfortunately I don’t remember the name) and he patiently answered all of them in details. He gave me guidance about the fruit trees I wanted to buy for half an hour or more. Finally he helped me to carry the trees to my vehicle. He was trying to give me advises until the last moment to make sure that planting will be successful. I am sure that he loves his job and also he knows his job very well.

Maybe it’s all the plants at this nursery but the place had always been nice and breezy. even when it’s a hot day. They also agreed to let me exchange a plant I killed for another. luckily, knock on wood, I have only had bad luck with this one. and all my others from this nursery have thrived :)

This place is every gardeners dream nursery.
They have a very wide selection of plants, flowers, tools, soil, all kinds of garden-​y stuff you can imagine.
The employees are pretty helpful here, at least the ones I have bumped in to. They were all pretty knowledgeable and gave helpful tips.
The prices seemed pretty decent also, but then again, I don’t go nurseries very often, but luckily my friend was there to guide me!
I’ll come back here again if I’m ever in the area.

«Wow!,» that’s what I have to say about SummerWinds Nursery.
Hugh selection of plants, flowers, garden thingamabobs, tools, and feed. Anything you could want, they have it. I originally went in for a Thumbelina Lavender plant but, after taking advantage of their knowledgeable staff, ended up getting the correct type of lavender for what I wanted to use it for. After mentioning the demise of my terrarium succulent, again I was treated to Michelle’s kindly-​generously-​patiently given advice. I have never had an experience like I did at SummerWinds, where a kind employee stops what ever they are doing and is genuinely present and invested in helping a customer with a black thumb become a successful gardener. Michelle is the greatest! And, as if that wasn’t enough, Rachel was a joy at the cash register answering my questions and providing me with the necessary boxes.
I will be back for a lemon dwarf tree one day! and of course any other gardening needs. It’s worth dealing with the embarrassment walking a bunch of plants into the office so they don’t fry in the car :)
*If price is your worry: I’ve been misguidedly shopping at Lowe’s (no selection, bad experiences every time/​every location), Home Depot (lovely people, little to no knowledge, no selection), and Rite Aide (purchased a $ 20 Fushia – an outrageous price but it was beautiful and I was desperate)…I can tell you, there is little to no difference in prices and I believe some items are less expensive here.
*I visited on a week day during my lunch hour. Any garden center in spring will be crazy and there is only so much staff to go around. Wherever you visit, if you have questions, a week day is always going to be your best bet for some advice from the garden gurus.

I went to Summerwinds to start a veggie garden for the first time. Unfortunately there is only one person working there who is knowledgeable about the vegetable plants and how to choose and he wasn’t available when I was there. This is a lovely place but am writing because it was pretty crowded on a busy Sunday with a good number of people like me who needed additional assistance to pick plants and no one could really give guidance. Very friendly staff though! So I would go here but would call first to see if you can get the help you need if you are like me — a first timer.

Got my Christmas tree this year from this Summerwinds, and I’m super happy with it. I’ve also been here before to get some indoor house plants and the staff has always been really helpful.
— Troy helped me pick out a tree, describing the differences between the Nordmann, Noble, and Douglas, and giving me tips on how to choose one, really nice guy who answered all the questions I had.
— I got a 6 – 7 ft Noble for $ 49, mine was about 7 ft and really full and symmetrical. Great price for a Noble.
— They gave me tree preservative for free, seems like you have to pay for it at other places.
— They gave the tree a fresh cut, netted it, and tied it to the top of my car for me.
— The tree is still in great shape and hasn’t shown any signs of browning yet (got it beginning of Dec)
All in all, a great tree buying experience, I will definitely be returning next year.

Great service and very reasonable prices! I am an aspiring gardener and I hope one day I can grow a couple of fruit trees and a herb garden. I went in a couple of weeks ago to ask for advice on getting my friend a plant as a house warming gift. The guys were friendly and explained to me what is easiest to grow /​maintain and how to treat all these plants. I had intention of buying only one plant but wanted to learn about the variety of plants and options. The sales rep I worked with was exceptionally patient and kindly walked through every plant I asked. He then helped me choose the best plant.
I paid for the plant and another sales guy helped me put it into my small car. He was very thoughtful and made sure there were some type of cover over the carpeting in my car before putting the plant in the car.
Will definitely come back!

A great local nursery with very friendly staff. We are looking to redesign our front and back yard, and the staff was very helpful. They walked around and told us about all of their plants, gave us pros and cons for certain options.
All in all, a great experience!

This is (apparently) my mother’s favorite nursery; I came here with her on a Monday afternoon in search of a dwarf lemon tree for my patio and some vegetables for her garden.
I found my lemon tree, a large pot to put my tree in, a mint plant (supposedly helps keep mosquitoes away), trailing flowers and a couple of small 2″ succulents. My mother was able to find about a third of what she was looking for and we are assuming that it just isn’t the season for what she didn’t find, although we didn’t ask. I wish the place was laid out a bit better, more organized, or maybe just better labeled so you can find what you’re looking for more quickly.
What I found:
Reasonable prices on most plants.
Sale on fruit-​bearing trees (score!).
Over-​priced garden do-​dads.
Pretty standard for nurseries, really, but I found what I went for and more so I’m happy.

I really appreciate the customer service at this SummerWinds location! The employees are always helpful and knowledgable. They have helped me select perfect perennials and annuals!
Sometimes the selection here is not as good as their Palo Alto location on San Antonio Road.

Staff is super nice and welcoming. When I asked a question I didn’t feel shunned for being of the younger generation… this happens sometimes when I go to nurseries.
The layout is open and I love it! Huge section for garden goodies too! Plants also look healthy and plenty of them! Will def be back here!

I was on a major hunt for goods I needed to make terrariums as gifts and SummerWinds was the third nursery I visited. I wish it had been my first!
The entire staff here was so helpful and friendly compared to the other places and the selection was HUGE. (at least for the items I needed: moss, succulents, indoor plants, etc)
This is my new go-​to nursery from now on!

Great place for an enviro-​wannabe urban gardener. I’ve been on a citrus kick lately and have vowed as God is my witness, I’ll never pay for a lemon again. I’ve got a nice lemon tree going but wanted to get some kumquat and limes going. Summerwinds had a great selection with 3 – 4 varietals of each and different tree sizes at reasonable prices. Staff were knowledgeable about each varietal and could tell me which ones would work best in my backyard.
On my way out, I enviously checked out their nice selection of compost barrels and worm bins. I keep wanting to take the composting plunge, but have visions of fly-​filled midnight opossum parties in my backyard.
