I LOVED Their Brownies & Mini German Chocolate Cakes, & Fondly Recall MANY A Birthday Cake My Mom Got Me From Them; I STILL Have The Fisherman Decoration From My Favorite B-​Day Sheet Cake That She Got. Farewell, George’s.

This place was owned by my relatives and whenever they came out to visit all the East Coast family, they baked us cakes. I didn’t even know they had closed! So sad! I was even out in San Diego last April and completely forgot to visit. My loss.

I can not believe that George’s Bakery closed. So very Bumb.
Me, my mom and sister would go there on sunday’s after church. We did that for about 25 yrs. It breaks my heart that they closed. Had the best cakes and pastries in National City.

This placed is closed and never refunded the money paid for a cake that was never made or delivered!!! Competely upset

Three words– lemon snow cake. DIVINE. I love this cake! It’s the only reason why I buy from George’s. Inexpensive, simple and delicious. Light vanilla cake, lined with thin layer of lemon curd, and topped with sweet coconut flake on the outside. What a combination! This cake is always a hit at parties.
Located right on Highland in National City. Cakes are inexpensive and they have small selection of baked goods.

The unthinkable has happened… Went there on a Sunday, not open. Called them, and the call wouldn’t go through [Edit: phone line no longer working!!!]. Maybe the had an off day, I thought… but no. I called a week later, and again, nothing. Every time I drive by the doors are closed. Unilocalers… it seems as if George’s has closed its doors.
How I will miss their lemon snow cakes, strawberry pies and delicious everything. I never even got the lemon snow cake for my birthday…
Damn it, where am I going to get my wedding cake now?! ;_​; SO. SAD.

I would give them zero stars if I could. Their customer service is horrible. My Sis ordered a cake for her son’s Halloween themed b-​day party. We showed up 30 minutes past the pick up time they gave us, then we were told it would be another 20 minutes. Finally they brought it out and the whole design was wrong. It was supposed to have a mummy on top of the cake, instead there was some blob. We told the guy the problem and he apparently called the owner out. She looked over at the cake and said, «there’s nothing wrong with it, I’m not talking to them» and walked off. Not once did she look over to us or say a word to us. I’m sorry but when you’re charging over 100 bucks for a small cake at least have the courtesy to talk to your customers. We refused to pay for the balance on the cake.

Where will I get lemon snow cakes now?

This is a small mother and pop sort bakery but their cakes are extremely fantastic and also are at a good price tag. Additionally they have other baked items which might be extremely tasty. In addition they do marriage ceremony cakes! One thing to recall is they may be closed on Saturday so make certain you do not attempt to go on that day!

Ever since I was a little girl our family has enjoyed George’s cakes, they have been a part of many wonderful memories in my family. My favorite was the banana nut cake… YUM!

–A MUST READ FOR ANYONE PLANNING A WEDDING–
Let me first say that the taste in George’s Wonderful World of Cakes is great. However, we found them lacking seriously in customer service and overall quality. If I could rate lower than 1 star, I would.
Amongst all the last minute details one handles for a wedding, finding and locating the cake scheduled months ahead time after the reception as already begun is a huge letdown! They managed to supposedly misplace the address and made no effort to call the groom, bride, grooms mother or father, all of whom they were given contact information. Instead they leisurely waltz in hours after expected arrival and carrying exactly what we did not want. The cake looked cheap and poorly made. A preschool arts and crafts class could have presented it better. We specifically asked that nothing that was not edible be placed on the cake and payed more to insure this. A monogram written by someone who’s English writing skills couldn’t rival a 5 year old and cheaply thrown about fake flowers adorned the cake almost arrogantly as they chose to do what they wanted and completely ignored the customer. Not even a remote effort was made to fix the problem nor was there any sincerity in the half hearted apology. Price remained more than what we got and the owner herself felt fixated on implying it was our fault. If you want to the stress of taking such a disastrous chance on these people, then go ahead. I hope better judgment comes from this.

Their strawberry pies are heavenly.
I told myself that I must come back to George’s for the strawberry pie and I finally did! The man who helped us this time around was extremely nice. I enjoyed listening to him describe each cookie to me when I asked him what kind they were. Their cookies are small and delicate, but they’re very good. Plus, they’re only $.25 each! Now, back to the strawberry pies. The large ones are $ 12.75 and the small ones are $ 3.75 (no tax on anything, by the way). I bought a small one and my boyfriend bought cookies. The pie is light and creamy, while the crust is thin and flaky — it was one of the best pies I’ve ever had! They also had large and small lemon meringue pies on display as well, which looked good too!

Whoa, um yeah they messed up this time. Ok the strawberry pie I can’t complain it’s still delish BUT… please do not get a birthday cake and I can’t imagine how there wedding cakes would be from here unless you like doing things like throwing money down garbage disposals because that’s what it felt like I did with the money I blew on this cake. I’ve had better from Sam’s Club & Costco, I mean seriously the birthday cakes that used to be so grand from here now suck more than anything else in the world (overexaggeration but you get it). I was expecting to get the same quality that I remembered as a child but clearly the person that used to my cakes is dead or was off that day and it sucked. I mean the birthday cake we got from here for our son’s 2^nd birthday party was the worst thing I’ve ever seen, the cake itself was very dry but the chocolate mousse filling was decent. The icing job looked like my 2 year old had done it himself and the plaque they claimed they were going to put on the front of the cake that would ve pretty and look like the picture looked NOTHING like that. I mean it was just terrible and the fact that they thought it looked ok and would not offer to re-​do it was what pissed me off. The employees were rude and inconsiderate that day and they seemed to not care about their customers. The dozen cookies for $ 3, I wouldn’t take them even if they were free. My hubby described them perfectly, «they taste like crap with sprinkles». I make better baked goods at home, I made some cupcakes & icing from scratch in addition to buying the cake and my guests were far more impressed with the quality and look of my homemade cupcakes than this bakery cake! We are just glad that we forgot to give the cookies to the kiddies because even they probably would have said that they taste pretty shitty (excuse my french). I mean goodness, this place talked a good game a few months ago and they disappointed me in ways I couldn’t imagine. I will never go back for cake or cookies but I’m still completely satisfied with the strawberry pie and is the ONLY thing I recommend trying from here. Please get it together George’s for the sake of peoples children’s precious memories of their birthday cake. Yeah, thanks a lot you really made my son’s day special (total sarcasm there by the way).

My family has been going to this place since the 1960s! The Lemon Snow is our favorite with a light and fluffy bounce and a light coating of shaved coconut snow. They have gone through many changes in ownership, but I love that they are still serving these lemon cakes through it all and that they have kept the same signage :)
The cakes are affordable, every time I go the service is friendly and the atmosphere is definitely unpretentious and authentic.

This place has been here for as long as I can remember. Been here numerous times, yet I have never met George himself. I just want to thank the guy for having awesome cakes, pies and other delicious goodies available.
GOOD:
— Strawberry Pie (available on certain days, sells fast)
— Lemon Snow Cake (nice refreshing taste, not too tangy)
— Red Velvet Cake (call in to order, don’t always have it)
— Chocolate Chip Cookies (thin, melt in your mouth type cookies!)
BAD:
— availability of certain cakes (call in advance if your looking for a certain flavor)
— the look (not too appealing, its like a woman who you know has the goodies, but lacks sex appeal)
UGLY:
— Gave up chocolate for Lent (had to settle for the fruit filled goodies)
— Located right there on Highland (watch out for the cruising lowriders)
Go and support your local bakery. Holla at George if anyone sees the guy. Tacos El Gordo down the street if you want to mix your sweets with spice and everything nice!

Strawberry pie:
– Layer of flaky crust
– Next layer of vanilla (i think) crème
– huge straberries wtih glaze
– topped with whipped cream and sprinkled crust crumbs on top.
motha-f’in fabulous! This pie is hands down the best I have ever tasted, and for that I think 9-​inch pie… $ 12. Not bad.
HK’s Parting Shot –
FACT: I can eat one of these strawberry pies all on my own.

First things first; whoever listed this place as «cheap» must be thinking of a different place — or a different time period. George’s used to have cheap prices until recently, when their prices sky rocketed. Last I checked, this place’s cakes (and I’m talking birthday cakes, not giant wedding cakes) typically average at $ 100 (for cake with plain insides and no filling, but an elaborate outside design) and go up from there. A small plain cake with no filling, and no elaborate outside design starts at roughly $ 40(!).
You can taste the cakes in advance at about $ 3 – 4 a slice, but there are only limited varieties available to try, and it really depends on the day. Pies and other baked goods are typically much cheaper than the cakes (for who knows what reason).
They do make some of the best looking cakes in all of San Diego and they do seem to enjoy taking their time with each customer to fit each customer’s needs. A unique experience to be sure.
However, for such high prices, their cakes don’t seem to taste that grand. They can be downright bland if not worse. The fact that they insist on additional bizarrely high surcharges just to add even the most vanilla thing (sadly literally) only furthers the outrage.
