Established in 1970.

SKF Automotive was opened in 1970 by Ray Fida and 2 partners with the intention of providing automotive repair service to the downtown new haven and Yale community .

My name is Enrico DiGioia and i have had a 26 year relationship with Ray and SKF and he convinced me that i would be the ideal candidate to succeed him as owner of his business.

I worked for him at various times in my 30 year auto technician career, I worked for him 3 times and spent the rest of my time working at Nissan/​Infinity/​Honda/​acura and various other garages and new car dealers

I am factory trained and have full ASE and advanced level diagnostic certifications.

Having worked for many companies i have learned how to fix the vehicles correctly, treat people and their vehicles with respect and absolutely insist that my employees do the same.

we are not part changers like so many places, we do our best to find the root cause of any problems your vehicle may have before recommending repair.

I went to SKF to have my 30,000 mile maintenance done. Usually, I go to the dealership and it takes 2+ hours to do similar maintenance. I was in and out in 20 minutes at SKF. They were extremely courteous, professional, and helpful. I absolute will bring my car back and highly recommend this shop. SKF is as good as it gets!

This place is tops! They didn’t end up working on our vehicle, but they were very honest and upfront about everything. A less honest shop could have easily gouged us, and they did not. Extremely knowledgeable. I would absolutely trust and recommend this shop.

In short, SKF is likely the best mechanic in the entire state of CT, and definitely the best mechanic I have ever come across. Enrico and Chris are fair and don’t make you feel like they are blindsiding you with unnecessary repairs and expenses. I took my car to them after having a very disappointing experience at George Harte Nissan and they checked out my car free of charge. Don’t go anywhere else– these are your guys!

I went to SKF to fix a problem with my IAT sensor (failed emissions test) with the understanding that my Jeep is slowly approaching a time when I’ll need to think about selling it. After reading the reviews here, I knew that this would be the place to go to get an accurate assessment of whether my car can last the next couple years of grad school, and they certainly didn’t disappoint!
Chris and Enrico were great to work with, and they noticed right away that I had a couple pending multi-​thousand dollar fixes and mentioned this even before identifying exactly what was wrong with my IAT sensor situation. Thankfully, the current problem was fairly cheap to solve, and I left paying less than $ 150 and with an improved idea of the state of my vehicle.
Thanks so much Chris, Enrico, and company. I’ll be sure to recommend you and be back if my car gives me any other problems.

SKF deserves its good ratings.
Last summer, I convinced myself that my clutch had given out and needed to be replaced. I brought it to SKF, and they took it for a spin, looked inside the engine, and told me there was nothing wrong with it. It’s been six months, and they were right, my clutch is totally fine.
They could have easily replaced it and taken my money. I’m grateful that they didn’t. It’s hard to find honest professionals who put their customers before themselves. I’ll be going to SKF for all of my auto repair work from now on.

They guys are awesome! I took my Nissan Sentra in because it was having starting problems. They were very friendly and professional. They ultimately found that it was a key problem, and I needed to take it into the dealer, but they charged me nothing for looking it over. I felt very well taken care of, and I would definitely bring my car back here for maintenance and repairs.

Update: Just saw Enrico’s response. He starts his response to the AC repair by stating «there is no way we would have told your wife this.» This is correct because my wife was NOT present at the time. I, myself, went to fix the AC both times. Since the owner was not present he doesn’t know what I (and not my wife) was or was not told.
I would certainly not pay for my car NOT to get fixed! Would you?

Brought my 2012 VW GTI by today to have a coolant leak investigated today. Enrico pointed out right off the bat that if the problem was due to a failing water pump, it should be covered by the 6 year/​60K mile VW power train warranty and if that was the case, I should consider having a dealer do the work under warranty and save $$$.
They tested the system and discovered a coolant leak that was likely caused by the water pump. They spoke with the local VW dealership who confirmed the diagnosis and stated that the work would be covered by warranty at the dealership.
I am *very* impressed by the courteous and professional way I was treated — SKF didn’t even charge me for the diagnosis time or the 2 quarts of coolant they added to the system — WOW!
Clearly SKF takes pride in taking care of their customers and you better believe I’ll be back the next time I need service for my cars. You should too!

Know their business, accommodating, smart, and are very nice! They let me bring my car in the afternoon before they could service it. Immediately took it for a test drive to experience the problem. Diagnosed it, and did the research to determine the warrantee coverage. Since the warrantee stipulated that only a dealer could do the repair, they contacted a dealer for me, sent me off with all the paperwork taken care of, which was far beyond the call of duty, and did not even charge me for their time. What a lucky find!

Have been really happy with Enrico in the past. Then had major work done in April which I was happy about.
Three months later found a leak in the radiator and called to ask for eyes on it.
Had trouble communicating with Chris at the front desk, who gave me be impression they’d charge me for a diagnostic.
Wrote an angry harsh Unilocal review. Enrico called and messaged me to listen to my concerns. Reassured me that it wouldn’t cost me anything to just have eyes on an obvious problem and that they remembered the business I gave them recently.
All is good again. Thanks guys.

As a travel nurse who had a break down in a strange city, these guys had a golden opportunity to rip me off. Instead, they gave me a fair estimate, and repaired my car in less time than promised, and when finished, came in under the original estimate price. I couldn’t recommend them more highly.

I can’t say enough good things about these guys. They kept my old, lousy car (’01 PT Cruiser) running longer than I would have expected, were honest with me about when it was time to let it go, and did a stellar inspection in the new (used) car (’10 Elantra) I then bought.
Their prices are fair, their turn-​around times solid, their repairs are honest and conservative, and they’re just nice to chat with.
If you believe in «fix it right, fix it once,» bring your car here. They’ll treat you well.
Also, I am female, and I have never, ever felt like they have talked down to me, or doubted me in any way, about the car or my ability to handle certain things myself.
For reals – if you buy a used car, have them inspect it. I waited around while they did it, and Enrico showed me a bunch of interesting/​relevant stuff under the car while he had it lifted – I appreciate that kind of thing.

i’ve been here three or four times now. i am so happy my friend recommended them to me.
as a first time car owner, i was really nervous about finding someone i trusted to help with repairs, and these guys are truly professionals who take the time to spell out the diagnosis, give you options about how to proceed, and even when faced with a bigger job that required more lengthy investigation which might rack up labor costs (in my case, diagnosis of an electrical problem), they even made sure to let me know they would call to see if i still wanted them to keep going to save me from sticker shock. they’re always timely in finishing the jobs in the time frame they expected.

I love SKF! They’re personable, professional, and very knowledgeable. I’ve taken two different cars to them (a 98 Volvo S70 and an 02 Toyota Prius) and have gotten excellent service on both. They really listen to what you’re looking for; for example, I wanted to know if there was a cheap fix for a leak in my exhaust line, rather than getting the whole thing replaced (which would be very pricey). They diagnosed it for free and told me to bring it somewhere else to get it welded. I’m very impressed with their honesty and will not take my car anywhere else. These guys are top notch.

I can’t believe how great and easy it is to work with these guys! They only recommend fixes that are necessary, but also tell you what to keep an eye for the future. They called me several times during the repair to explain what they found and to make sure that I agreed with the plan. I really appreciated how they explained the inner workings of the car in a way that I could understand. I wouldn’t hesitate to bring small and large jobs to them again in the future. Prices were reasonable. I wouldn’t take my car anywhere else!

I was simply looking for a cheap and quick fix for my car (brake problems) and I got much more than just that from Enrico, Chris, and the rest of SKF automotive! They are super friendly, honest, took time to explain everything, and were very direct with what needed to be fixed and what was not necessary. The auto diagnostics service was free and repair costs were very reasonable. They trump Firestone in customer service, flexibility, price, and knowledge by a lot! They are also very conveniently located close to downtown, so that I could walk to pick up my car. Lastly, they have a very cute dog. Thanks!
I recommend this place 100% for regular tune-​up service and repair.
