History

Established in 2003.

The school was founded in 2003, to allow individuals to be trained in the profession and perform all of the services that are approved by the Department of Education in our curriculum. Our students train to become competent and licensable barber operators. We prepare our students for the state barber practical examination. We also assist our students to obtain apprentice licensure which allows them to work legally in New York while they prepare for the state exam. The preparation for the exam and the results can take several months after completion of school. Upon registration as an apprentice or after passing barber practical examination, we assist our students with job placement. Job placement is not guaranteed.

Owner is smug and condescending… and downright rude. Yes it’s $ 6 for a haircut but you have to sign what is essentially a waiver beforehand that says you won’t hold the school accountable for any injury or damages that occur. Comforting. In addition you have to pay before the haircut. The business attracts mainly homeless people as patrons because of the price — a line of vagabond looking fellows was building behind me as I considered waiving my rights.

Just to be clear, I’m not training to become a professional barber. I’m not rating the SCHOOL. I’m a consumer who is rating the service I received.
Everything in NYC is overpriced. Every 2 years, the MTA raises prices (and yet service gets progressively worse). A lunch can easily exceed $ 10. However, the ABI Barber School only charges $ 6 for a haircut and it usually takes 45 minutes at most. This is a bargain compared to the typical price of $ 15-​$ 20 at most «upscale» locations.
This is a no frills shop. The barbers are students who may not be able to do the most complicated hair styles. This place isn’t for everyone– I wouldn’t recommend it for a male model or a fashionista. However, if you just want a simple haircut at the cheapest price then I recommend coming here.
