Canine Styles Downtown

I hear the amazing groomer Tonya is still grooming a few days the village.
Does anybody know where?

I had the WORST experience at Canine Styles on Greenwich Ave. and you couldn’t pay me to give them my business. I was crystal clear about the grooming appointment I wanted but was booked for something different. Now, I can understand a miscommunication can happen, but, as I was explaining the issue to the owner, he was shockingly rude and hung up on me after realizing he made a mistake… which I had booked 2 weeks in advance. If that’s how they treat paying customers I don’t want to think about how they would treat my dog. I highly recommend taking your business elsewhere. Towne House Grooming on 8^th Ave and 24^th couldn’t have been more lovely and took my appointment right away. They do a fantastic job!!!

They must treat her well when I leave as my dog walks me here everyday, that’s how much SHE loves the people at Canine Styles! Great groomers, friendly staff and great selection of pet products in the boutique. Decently priced for Manhattan!

Visiting from out of town, I wanted to get my corgi a new coat. I love the horse blankets but found out that I got a size too big when I got home. (For the record, the 18″ blankets are the correct size) I was able to ship the blanket back to Canine Styles and have it exchanged for a size smaller. This process which could have been complicated turned out to be quick and efficient. Thank you!

I bought a dog bed from them and immediately had problems with it. They were super helpful and eventually just gave me a new bed. I can’t imagine any other store going to such lengths to help me, and they were always very nice and understanding and helpful. I thought the bed was a little pricey when I bought it, but now have zero regrets. Much appreciated.

After sending multiple emails, I finally received a full credit for the unsatisfactory haircut my dog had received. I’ve since been back in to pick up a few cute toys that I can only find at this store.

I have a very sweet and energetic mini golden doodle who has a pretty curly coat and it gets matted every so often. I take pride in taking care of my dog: brushing him and cleaning him being amongst those things. However I’m not a professional and my skills only get me so far. Now I’ve seen extremely matted dogs and mine was not at that point however when I brought my dog to Ernesto, one of the groomers at Canine Styles Downtown, he proceeded to tell me that the dog was way too matted and it was going to cost me extra to groom him. He went out of his way to tell me multiple times that he didn’t want to hurt the dog, and I couldn’t agree more. The last thing I would want is for my dog to get hurt. But two hours later, after I picked him up, I noticed that he was picking and itching at his skin. When I checked to see what was the matter, I parted his fur and couldn’t believe it: his skin looked like hamburger meat, it was all raw and red and bruised. Later I noticed that the very sensitive area under his butt (the former site of his «manhood») had been pretty badly nicked. And now, not even a week later, he has little scabs on his skin from where the brush dug into him as well as a scab on that very sensitive spot. Not only did my dog suffer physical harm but he’s suffered emotional harm as well. I’ll get the little guy back up to speed but I will never go back to that place again. How could anyone mistreat a dog just to prove a point to another person?

I have an 8-​year old Cairn terrier that I have hand-​stripped to prevent skin problems. I’ve been taking him to Canine Styles for a couple years, since the «stripper» left Downtown Doghouse and I’ve been satisfied in the past, though the last time we went, my dog was hesitant to go in. He’s recently had surgery on his eye, so I made sure to tell the groomer that I didn’t want him traumatized and that perhaps just a partial strip and then scissor him to tidy him up. When I picked him up 3 ½ hours later (very quick for stripping, as most groomers will work for 10 – 15 minutes, then give the dog a break, then go back to it) he’d been stripped so aggressively that his skin was showing along his back. The groomer just shrugged and said he didn’t have any undercoat (not true — he was in good shape when I brought him in). If so, WHY did she keep pulling out his hair? If it was summertime, I’d literally worry about him getting sunburnt. When I complained to the manager, he reduced my price from $ 135 (which is ridiculous for a 23 lb dog and a $ 50 increase since I started going there). On the walk home, I noticed his front paw was bleeding — she’d clipped a nail too close — not that a dog that plays on concrete needs his nails clipped at all and I certainly had not requested it. That’s it for us — I feel like my dog was abused.

The prices are quite ridiculous. $ 80 for a no name dog jacket that looks like it costs $ 20 from Petsmart or Petco. I thought the NYC Subway shirts were cute though. Stuffed animal toys for $ 15 that you could get elsewhere for $ 5-​$ 10. Customer service was sorely lacking, even without any people besides the employees there. Treats were just okay, nothing special.

I don’t tend to write bad reviews but this one really upset me. I took my 13 year old 5lb long haired Chihuahua here to be groomed. I thought it was preposterous to spend $ 75 for a 5-​lb dog but that’s NY prices. I arrived on time to pick her up but she wasn’t done yet. There is a glass door between the boutique and the grooming area and as I sat she was getting finished. The woman working on her was incredibly rough as she worked. She grabbed my dog my the head and picked her up just by her front legs, which I know she doesn’t like. I even heard my dog Unilocal a couple times and she doesn’t do that unless she’s actually in pain. She was cowering on the table and the woman wasn’t do anything to calm her, she was actually snapping at her. Not something any owner wants to see. Just the way that she was handling her made me worry for the prior two hours. My dog practically leaped into my arms when she was done and wouldn’t even eat a treat (another thing she never does). I didn’t make a big fuss because, frankly, the woman scared the crap out of me. I wish I had. I will never be going back.

I got my dog a wonderful down jacket here that keeps him warmer and more comfortable than anything else we’ve tried. The price tag hurt, hence four stars instead of five, but I don’t spoil my dog too often and when I do I want it to count, so I will come back here for the next major purchase.

I’ve never bought anything here (I don’t own a dog in the city) but I stopped in during a street fair. The lady who works there is super friendly and helpful, and she is (usually) accompanied by two little angels: a cute kitty that sits in the doorway and a TINY WEINER DOG. The lady didn’t even care that I sat on the floor for twenty minutes and played with the dog.

Small and cute. The things they carry are expensive (like all dog boutiques) but I love their Aspen Parkas and the «I Love NY» sweatshirts they carry. They are perfect for the cold weather. They also have a friendly cat that walks around the store.
