Carlow East

I was frankly surprised to find a legit Irish bar on the Upper East Side. The reviews are true: feisty regulars, no-​nonsense bartenders, a simple menu of beer and mixed drinks, Creedence on the stereo. It’s a clean space with a pool table. Nothing more to it!
Drinking on Museum Mile is not a simple task. Most local establishments are bistros with cocktail programs and rooftop views. On a warm June afternoon, however, sometimes you just need to escape the humidity with a cold pint of Guinness or Brooklyn Lager.
Judging from the crowd, Carlow East is a great place for regulars to socialize. Most of the patrons seemed to know each other and the bartender. If you order a few rounds, it’s also not unusual to receive an occasional buyback. Just don’t embarrass yourself by ordering cocktails with milk or exotic fruit!

It’s a regular dive-​y experience. They have a pool table, which comes with the argumentative crowd, that was ready to throw some fists at each other while we were there. (luckily that didn’t happen)
I don’t know how would I feel about the place had a lived in the same building and had it been convenient for me to bond with the bartender (and be perceived as a regular) but since that ain’t my story, I didn’t really enjoyed the visit as a random bypasser.

Its a good-​enough place to go to whenever you’re in the neighborhood. It has a pool table, drink prices are reasonable and people seem to be nice. Check it out if you’re nearby, if not, you’re not missing out on anything.

I was thirsty after visiting the Met and was walking along when I spotted the Tri Color flying outside… absolutely a legit Irish bar… perfect! Professional bartenders who can tell your mood and leave you alone without needless banter. Will hit it up again on a return trip.

Had a conference in New York City that began on Sunday, January 11^th – meaning I had to fly out on Saturday the 10^th. Well that’s fine. If I have to be out of town on a weekend, New York – even frigid New York – is a terrific place to be.
Airline reservations — check.
Hotel reservations — check.
Conference reservations — check.
I’m golden. What could possibly go wrong? Only the 2015 NFC Divisional Championship game. Oh snap. The 12^th man doesn’t fly during Seahawks playoff games!
A moment of panic, a quick web search – good news – the game had an 8PM kickoff, four hours after arriving in NYC. There would be plenty of time to check-​in at the hotel (see my Waldorf Astoria review:
) and head over to a bar to watch the game.
But what bar? There are literally thousands in the city.

Fast forward to the 10^th. It’s freezing in NYC – temperatures in the teens as I make my way to the Upper East Side. Forty-​five minutes before kickoff and there’s a line waiting to enter. Well that makes sense I suppose. There is an earlier game, after all. As that game ends a very few people start straggling out and the bouncer starts allowing new people in. «All the way to the back», he tells us. «That’s the only area with room.» As I enter I can’t help but wonder what his definition of «room» is. Carlow East is quite literally the most crowded room I have ever been in. It is also one of the most energetic. There is green and blue EVERYWHERE.
I get a beer and start visiting with people around me. Asking the question, «What’s your connection to Seattle?» is enough to get a lively conversation going. There are business travelers like myself, ex-​pats, students and a surprising number of people with no direct connection but who simply love the Seahawks.
The game begins and I grab another beer. The guys behind the counter are busting their butts keeping the crowd lubricated. Over the next three hours-​plus, they never slow down, never miss an order, never lose their patience. Short of the actual players on the field, these guys are the hardest working people in sports that day.
The game starts off slow, but the crowd never doubts, never waivers. The energy is euphoric. The beer flows continuously and, while it’s near impossible to move more than an inch or two in any direction there is no pushing, rudeness or antagonism.
As the game enters the fourth quarter, it is impossibly tight with the Seahawks holding onto a four-​point lead. Within seconds the Seahawks open up some breathing room with a field goal. A bit over four minutes later, they double the lead with a touchdown and four-​plus minutes after that, another touchdown. Everyone at Carlow East is out of their minds. It is one of the most electric sports moments I have ever been a part of. And, although Carolina scores another touchdown with 2:34 left, that does nothing to dampen the celebration.
As the game comes to an end, the crowd counts down the final ten seconds. A few locals climb onto chairs – or maybe they were tables, I couldn’t really see – and leads everyone in a few cheers. Quickly though the bar starts to empty. It’s around midnight now and the temperature outside is in the teens. No reason to put off the inevitable freeze. Still, as I head into the night and towards the subway, my heart is warm. Warm with the glow of a Seahawks victory and warm with the community that I met at New York City’s greatest Seattle sports bar, Carlow East.

At Carlows today and had the greatest time… Great bartender Vinny was there… Always the funnest place on the Upper East Side… Beers are ice cold…

Never coming back to this bar ever again. From the feedback I got about this place that night… Supposedly the bartender was attempting to communicate with me while I was on the phone and he assumed that I videotaped him which wasn’t the case… I was actually watching videos on my device while my friend had gone to pick up a phone call which conveniently was telling colleagues to come to Carlows East… All of a sudden my friend gets into a confrontation with the bartender and at this point, I didn’t know about what it was in regards to… He kicked us out… And I was frankly confused since I even asked the bartender how much I owed. People are way too sensitive with the devices nowadays. And for the record, get over yourselves. I wasn’t recording you but I’m glad you reacted as prematurely as you guys did… My advice speak to me directly and get my attention when asking me if I’m videoing you. Hope this review helps. Yes, This was the first time ever getting kicked out of a bar and assumed it was the race gig due to the vast confusion when leaving. I don’t have many low ranked reviews on bars but this is unfortunately my first… Btw, one of their bartenders actually messaging me stating it is solely an Irish bar which is fine. Don’t worry, it’s New York, there’s other bars to go to. My mistake for going to yours.
My recommendation would be to skip out on going to this bar, and head to another one across the street that won’t cause too much distress over petty BS.

Seahawks fans have a home field advantage at Carlowes. It’s like being at the game. The place is packed with 12’s who are loud, crazy, fun for the whole game. Bartenders are great too. Great experience to watch a game 2800 miles from home.

My friend moved her going away party after East End Bar and Grill was super packed last Saturday night. Most of my friends were already familiar with it because it’s so close to where we work. This was my first time there. I was most surprised on how small it was. I guess it was a normal size bar with actual bar itself, a jukebox, and a pool table. It was dark.
I think I’m just spoiled over East End’s spaciousness but I hated the limited seating space. Plus, the fact they served NO FOOD! No food and I was STARVING! Anyway, I had a whiskey and coke, a vodka Sprite, and a Long Island Iced Tea. The first two drinks were very watery and for $ 8 and $ 5 a pop, respectively, I expected a little more pow. The LI Iced Tea was slightly better in its potency but not by much.
For my all of friends, who are regulars or semi-​regulars, the pool table was the place to be. Epic games were won and lost in all of the drunken merriment and debauchery! The bartender was nice enough. Although, he was definitely losing his patience after my party broke 2 of his beer glasses.
All in all, I loved the camaraderie and I’m going to miss my friend dearly. Carlow East? Not so much.

The draft beer wasn’t flat. Other than that, don’t waste your time here. Not fun. Rude bartender. Hey sir– please try to at least hide the fact that you’re annoyed to pour one beer when the bar isn’t busy. Sad environment. Come here if you’re hungover, want to feel bad about yourself, and need a drink before you go somewhere else. Anywhere else. Like the DMV. you’d probably have more fun there than at this dump. Not good.

Are you a Seahawks fan/​lover/​player/​or just want to see what the 12^th man is all about? COME here, the crowd, the people, the energy is insane. I took a niners fan on Sunday for the last half of the game and he was DEFINTLY amazed that we had fans all the way in NYC. I think he had fun.
We didn’t drink because it was soooo packed.
They don’t have any food, but for the games they do have some catering, not always lots left, but its in the far back of the room.
I use to live out this way and go every Friday if I could and it was always a great time. I would come early and get a spot hang out with people from Seattle, just moved here, or just hear a great story or two.
I haven’t been back in a while, but glad I came by to see my people.

The absolute worst bar in the city. Arrogant and rude bartenders. A staffer went as far as to put his hand on my date. The place is threatening and unsafe.

If you want a friendly, small town feeling bar to watch the Seahawks in NYC this is your place. Tried going last season and the line was out the door. Went back last night for MNF and had such a great time with fellow Seattlites that I’m regretting that I didn’t wait in the line last year!

Nice low key neighborhood pub for a pint or to watch sports. They have plug sockets lined up all along the bar. Enough said.

Discovered Carlow East after moving to NYC a few years ago and it has become our home-​away-​from-​home on game days. Great staff, free food during many hawks games, and Redhook! I love these guys. If you are a hawks fan or just from anywhere near Seattle, you have GOT to come here for a game. You will seriously feel like you’re back home.

We were in town during the Seahawks vs. Niners game, and at first we were a bit worried we’d have a hard time finding a good place to catch the game. The main concern was finding a place that would even turn it on with sound (not just CC), but a quick Google search revealed this place. As luck would have it, a friend visited NY the week prior and watched the Seahawks vs. Cardinals game, so he did all the recon for us. For the 3hrs we were there, it felt like we were back home at the local watering hole. Everyone had their Seahawks gear on – even the bartenders had on jerseys. People led chants and we celebrated every TD, INT, first down, etc… like we were tailgating outside the CLink. That was all good in and of itself, but Beecher’s cheese happened to be there filming some promotional stuff, so they provided a free catered buffet.
I know there are a few other bars that support the Hawks or are Seattle-​friendly, but none can match Carlow East. This place is legit!

After being converted to a Seahawks fan three years ago, I really eager to visit this hub that my native Seattle friends have been talking about.
This place is full of the most diehard, heckling group of fans I have ever met. And that is saying a lot, since I grew up in a time that the NYY and NYM rivalry was real.
Everyone from here, from the barstaff to the patrons are super friendly. There is no kitchen but you are allowed to bring in your own food.
If you are coming here for a game come early! Like when the bar opens. There will be no seats 2 hours before the game starts.
It is a comfortable space even in the standing section (entire bar)

Well. Let’s start with this, if you are not willing to tell people your weekend specials over the phone. Then don’t answer the phone.
If you do in fact answer the phone, be prepared to explain your specials in detail to a potential customer.
I was very interested in making plans with a group of 15+ people to watch the USA World Cup game, however when calling to find out specials and if they take reservations. I was given a «come on?!» And the hung up on. Really bro? I work in the service industry and I go through the hassle of listing drink and bar specials every day too. Unlike you, I have never hung up on someone. You clearly don’t respect your customers nor care if you bring in revenue to your bar. Way to be a dick.
