3.5 stars. Cheesesteak, chips, bottle soda special. $ 9.95. Cheesesteaks was not fresh and the bread was hard. Good service. Definitely a hole in the wall. Had much higher expectations. 2nd time got fresh meat which made the sandwich much better. They key is fresh meat. The fries were get good too and thick. Enough for two people.

Went there with a groupon deal. For the groupin deal it was definitely good. 2 phillies with fries. Beef is fresh along with the cheese. Regular toasted hoagie bread nothing too special. I think the philly needs a special touch which it was missing. Place is small, kinda greasy, with limited seats.

Sad to see they shut down. The cheese steaks were always pretty good. Bread was generally fresh and a little chewy. Fries weren’t anything to rave about but they were enjoyable. Looks like they launched a food truck though the prices seem to have gone up.

I don’t like it. The bread was super dense and chewy in a bad way. The ratio for bread to meat was not equal. I felt there was waaay too much bread(bad bread) to the meat. The meat quality was poor and I made the bad decision to choose cheapo cheese whiz to go with the other cheapo ingredients. I wouldnt eat it again, but for those of you who want to try it, I’d definitely go with something besides cheese whiz. unlike you have a weird affinity to cheese whiz 00

Greasy and delicious, it would be a 4 star if the cashier wasn’t so rude. Once I had purchased a groupon deal and she refused to let me use it claiming it was«unauthorized» and the second time she refused to give me a cup for water. She’s so rude it’s not even worth arguing. Right around the corner on 31st and lex is Shorty’s. Just as good and the employees are nice.

Perhaps the most expensive Philly cheesesteak place I’ve tried in NYC yet. The steak, fries, and a drink combo came out over $ 15. I always do the chicken steak but didn’t like how they had the mean precooked and sitting in water as opposed to grilling fresh. Toppings(eg peppers) were put on top of the sandwich cold instead of being grilled in which I thought was odd. Otherwise it wasn’t too bad– though I have to say my fav cheesesteak in the city thus far is about 20 blocks away at 99 miles to Philly. The fact that they take Amex saved them from a 3 star rating.

Just the best cheesesteaks in New York, that’s all. Oh, and if you’ve just had twenty beer after watching the NFC Championship game and you get a jonesing to cart your ass half way across town just to have a Carl’s steak sandwich, don’t, by any means, when you order, lean against their mother-scratching glass. They get pissed. Like, real glassholes. But the steak sandwich and chili cheese fries are worth it. If they threw batteries at me and peed on my sister(wow, are we really in Philadelphia?) I would still dig on this cheesesteak.

Best NYC CheeseSteak spot you could find. I love this place… their cheese steaks are all very good, filling and aren’t super sloppy like most places. You are given tons of customizable choices from cheese bacon greens peppers awwww it’s soo good. The stuff is very friendly and the cooks put the food together very quickly. They even have great combos with bacon fries etc… but the cheese steak will do it’s job if you’re not into spending a little extra. Seriously, impress yourself got to Carl’s.

After living in Canada for over a year, one of the foods I really missed was a good olé American cheesesteak. And being from DC, my go-to was always Jerry’s.(Don’t hate.) When I discovered this chain, I knew this would become my go-to spot in NYC. My order is: cheesesteak with provolone and American, mushrooms, and mayo. No whiz for this girl. Also, the guys working there have always been very nice. What could make this place even better? If somehow I could put in a half order so I don’t fill up and feel like a fatty.

We came here to redeem a kgbdeals /Google offers promotion that we prepaid $ 10 for choice of 2 cheesesteaks, chicken steaks, or The Works + 2 orders of fries. When we got there, we were told there was a misadvertisement on the deal and that it is only worth $ 21. If I wanted to continue to use it, I would have to pay the difference or I can call Google Tech Support to get the problem resolved. They didn’t care to honor the deal, and left it as a take it or leave. On that aspect, the customer service here was horrible in that they didn’t even apologize or budge one bit to work something out. After deliberation, we decided to get two of the Works($ 9.25 each) and 2 orders of fries($ 2.50 each) which came out to $ 25.59. I had to pay the difference of $ 4.59. The Works($ 9.25) included thinly sliced sirloin or chicken breast served with grilled onions, mushrooms, hot sweet and green peppers with your choice of cheese whiz, american, or provolone. I opted for the sliced sirloin with cheese whiz. The cheesesteak was sizable at about a good 10 inches in a thin torpedo size, similar to Quiznos. Portions were scarce in all fronts, from the steak, to the cheese, to the vegetables. I had to actually open the hero to see if there was any cheese and vegetables in it. After realizing they had a few bits of each, I took a couple bites. The flavors were there, but the steak was a bit dry and slightly chewy. More cheese whiz, onions and mushrooms would have helped to make it a little more tolerable. The hot sweet peppers did add a bit of spicy and sourness to it, which I appreciated, but not enough to overlook the other ingredients. I was not impressed at all. The serving of French Fries($ 2.50) were abundant, and just about overflowing from the paper tray. The hot fries were crispy on the outside, but I found the inside to be slightly hollow. All that starch and potato goodness was missing. How? I have no idea. Beside that, the fries were decent and well-seasoned. The ambiance was a bit dirty and small. In the very back are two small tables to sit a maximum of 6 people. Beside the two tables is the fountain drink machine, napkin dispenser, and squeeze bottles of ketchup, BBQ sauce, and other condiments. If you do decide to come here, you’d most likely want to take it to go. For cheesesteaks, I would definitely not go out of my way to eat at Carl’s. With very poor customer service, scant proportions, and so-so sandwiches, I’d venture elsewhere.

Where can you find chopped steak, melted cheese wiz, sauteed peppers and onions, piled into a hero and slathered with hot, meaty juices? We can’t all make it to heaven… so luckily there is also Carl’s. I finally made my way over to here today. This place is a hole in the wall… but it will draw you in for sure. Nothing allures humanoids like the promise of hot meat and melted cheese! I stayed simple, cheesesteak + cheezwiz + onions + peppers. BOOM. $ 8, BOOM. 5 minutes to heaven! Oh man. This was a meaty, fatty paradise… in my mouth for ten minutes… because that’s all the time it took for me to wolf that baby down! The meat is chopped into bite sized pieces, the meat juices and cheese wiz melt into a delicious concoction that binds everything together and the peppers and onions and just a tiny bit of crunch. Not that many tables in this place, but make sure you boggart one… because you are going to want to eat this thing while it is still hot, steamy and naughty looking.

Love these cheesesteaks, though I’ve never had an actual Philly cheesesteak to compare it to. It’s so nice though. You walk in, walk up to the counter, order it. They make it up real fast. If you’re eating there, they bring it to one of the few tables in which you’re sitting at(beware it can get hot in there). It’s comes out hot and fresh. My suggestion, go with the melted nacho cheese! I smells like delicious cheesesteak in there… and really, why wouldn’t it. The price isn’t too bad either. TLDR: If you’re craving cheesesteak in NY, definitely put this place on your list!

My BFF snagged a Google offer two weeks ago: $ 5 for two orders of Philly cheesesteaks with fries. Having not eaten many good cheesesteaks from New York, I was very impressed with the ones from Carl’s! The meat was not dry, the amount of provolone cheese was perfect, the fries were fresh and crispy, and the mushrooms($.50 extra) were the perfect topping. Even without the coupon, $ 6.75 for a Philly cheesesteak in the city is pretty decently priced, and I would return without hesitation for more. Now, Carl’s isn’t a full-service restaurant: it resembles a hole-in-a-wall with tall tables and stools and you order and pick up your food at the counter. I’m sure the servers are attentive at cleaning the place, but don’t freak out if you see a newly-vacated table that has leftover bread crumbs from the previous messy occupant and the servers don’t come clean it right away. Just brush it aside with your extra napkins and enjoy your delicious cheesesteak!

What happens when you take a Southern girl and take her to Carl’s Steak for a cheez whiz sub? Come on, guess? That had to be the worst thing I have EVER put in my mouth. Ok. One of… I had an epiphany as I took the first bite… Northerner’s are from Jupiter and Southerner’s are from Venus. I hear Yankee’s say that Southern food is horrible and now I know the same about New Yorker’s beloved cheez whiz philly. I gave it two stars because the fries were good and I can see it being a good philly if I had chosen a normal cheese. That comes in a slice… Not out of a jar…

The cheesesteak here is alright, decent, not great. We ordered the chicken cheesesteak & the cheesesteak. Both with whiz & onion. The bread was soft. As for the meat, we thought it was a bit bland & greasy… The cheese fries was decent… it was good… not great… We spent $ 21 for two cheesesteaks, cheese fries, & a bottle of water. The place is pretty small… Only few tables inside… Overall, the cheesesteak here is just okay, not all that great. We’d rather go to 99 Miles To Philly…

*please read my previous reviews now since this is an update* I really don’t know why, but i stopped by one more time even though i didn’t like like the food on my previous two visits. Maybe all the tools yammering about…“OoOoOh~ Philly cheesesteaks~ SOGOOD~!!!” has brainwashed me into thinking the Philly cheesesteak is more than it actually it is… Anyways, here’s what I got: 1. cheese fries(I think $ 3.25 before tax): They had the right crisp, but the fries were cold and tasted like they’ve been sitting around forever… 2. Cheesesteak with the works(I think $ 8.75 before tax): Very little meat with all condiments which didn’t taste any good. It was pretty uneventful… That’s it. I swear… no more Carl’s even if I’m butt-drunk. If you see another review update, flag me and send me to the Unilocal asylum for people who have lost their marbles…

This is a simple no frills place with limited seating — some countertops and stools. The philly cheesesteak sandwiches are good, but nothing special. I tried one here with provolone cheese and grilled onions. They charge extra for everything here — the cheese, peppers, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. The meat of the sandwich is juicy and tender. However, the sandwich itself is a bit smaller than what I’ve had from other cheesesteak places. Taste-wise there are better places like 99 Miles to Philly(which also has bigger sandwiches).
