Davey’s Ice Cream

This is one of my favorite neighborhood ice cream spots! Unique hipster flavors with old/​new school hip hop jams for your ice cream eating enjoyment. I usually get their vanilla speculoos (a belgium/​danish cinnamon cookie crumbled into the ice cream) but have tried their roasted pistachio, mexican vanilla and strawberry/​cream, all equally delicious. Between the hubs and I we’ve probably tried the entire menu and while we have our favorites, everything is pretty damn good. You can also take a peek at their industrial ice cream making equipment in the back room.
The servers are young, friendly and cheerful, exactly the type of people you want serving you ice cream. One time, one of the guys chipped the edge off our waffle cone and he gave us extra ice cream for it. Another time my husband ordered a double scoop and the guy piled on a HUGE double scoop on a waffle cone. Service is beyond awesome. I’ve even stopped by to get a pint of speculoos to bring home which I’ve never done anywhere else, the ice cream is THAT good. I read they also opened a spot in Brooklyn recently too.

Good ice cream but not my preferred style. I came here after some Dan and John’s wings next door to cool off. I got a scoop of peppermint chip and the Speculoos. Both flavors were pretty subtle and the texture was on the airy, drier side. I like my ice cream dense and creamy so I wasn’t a crazy about it but still happily ate it up. I did try a sample of their Star Wars «Light Side» flavor which was texturally better but too sweet for me. My boyfriend however, who doesn’t like most ice cream and rich/​creamy foods (blasphemy), actually enjoyed it so if you’re an anomaly like him, you might like this place more than I did.
$ 4.00 for a single, $ 5.00 for a split (two flavors), they take card, limited seating in the back.

It’s always a great time at Davey’s. You can tell the employees are having fun and so are the customers because the ice cream is delicious! The salted caramel sauce is better than… well most things I have tried. The cookies and cream is also amazing. There isn’t a ton of seating and sometimes there is a decent line but well worth it.

Delicioso. Dave’s is next door to one of my favorite places on the planet, Dan and John’s Wings. It’s now my go-​to desert place when I’m visiting D&J for some Buffalo wing action.
Both times I’ve had the milk shake (yet to try the spooned ice cream). The pumpkin spice shake I had last time was outrageously good. Prices are high, especially on shakes, but it is, in the New York City sense of the phrase, worth it.
There’s a hangout table in the back and the décor is definitely a trip back to childhood, minus the impressive-​looking ice cream lab in the back. Servers are friendly so don’t forget to tip.

Ice cream!
Felt like some sweet stuff hence came here after dinner. Davey’s offered a variety of unique flavors to choose from and also their home made warm apple pie! I only tried the Mexican vanilla flavor and felt in love with it instantaneously. Sooooooo soft and smooth! Wish I could eat ice cream non-​stop!

Location: Located on the 1^st Ave, Davey’s ice cream is not hard to find at all. Interesting and splendid sign, with attactive color, I found Davey fairly easily. The decoration is pretty nice and interesting. They closed the ice cream so I wasnot sure if they still offer ice cream. They also have blackboard, which includes all the ice cream flavors, coffees, etc.
I tried their strong coffee ice cream. The first bite is great, taste exactly like epresso. But then, something weird happened. At the end, the ice cream is nasty. UGH the worst part is that it is too dry compared to other ice cream brand.
Service: people are friendly and nice and let me try out several flavors.
I would say it is a 3 star for flavor, +0.5 for the great service in this cold city

Super cute shop with a wicked friendly team behind the counter no matter how many sloshed St. Mark’s revelers they’re faced with.
Delicious and unique homemade flavors which they let you sample with adorable real metal spoons. Super charming.
They know what’s up when it comes to hot fudge, too. Homemade, and it’s actually hot. Plus they line the bottom of your cup with it in addition to doling it out up top. The bomb. And worth every penny.

Solid ice cream shop. Can’t say I can distinguish this from any other ice cream, but there are good core flavors including the best of all: Speculoos. They have a few rotating seasonal flavors (e.g. pumpkin in fall), sell by the pint, do ice cream sandwiches, and offer waffle cones if you are so inclined. You should be.
If this is the closest ice cream place you to right now, yes come here — it’s good.

You know when you get ice cream and after a few bites you’re all like mannnn, all I want is to NOT eat any more ice cream? Me neither.
What these guys boil (freeze?) down to is that they’re significantly too expensive for too little ice cream. The ice cream is good. I’d even say that it’s well above average! But you get a tiny amount for $ 4, and for that I need my ice cream to be dynamite like Mikey Likes It or Ample Hills. This was good but not great and I was done with my cone way too soon for satisfaction. I’ll be skipping it next time.

Davey’s Ice Cream is your place – not so much for the scream as that will likely get you tossed.
however as the craft ice cream game downtown multiples – Davey’s brings it best and finest scoops of locally-​sourced, hand-​made cool ice cream flavors, topped with a heap of hospitality.
Davey’s has an updated ice cream parlor feel. old school subway tiling, accents, exposed brick, etc. the lighting, framed old-​but-​new prints, and some of the other finishes are modernesque… it’s a nice meld between the old and new – and throws in a bit of playfulness and fun so the ice creamery is warm and fun not sterile and cold. the front of the joint has a small amount of seating: chairs, tables, stools. the middle of the space is where the chalkboard menu and the actual ice cream can be sampled and served. checkout at the end of the narrow walk space which opens up into a decent sized amount of tables and chairs for gorging and gabbin’. the very back seems to be windowed peak into Davey’s ice cream making. have yet to catch a glimpse of the sweet sorcery in progress.
i have been to Davey’s a bunch o’ times. i typically go for a kid’s cone or split sone. my go-​to flavors are peppermint chip, speculoos chocolate chip, and chocolate chocolate. i’ve sampled other flavors which have been yum, but have not tempted me away yet. in time, perhaps. you can, of course, get cones, scoops in a bowl, milk shakes, ice cream sandwiches, sundaes, and a variety of different toppings to avalanche your ice cream choices with… i’ll be honest — the ice cream at Davey’s is ridiculously good. the ice cream flavors are off the charts – simple n cool, perfectly sweet and rich, and most importantly addictive… ha. no gimmicks needed here. the ice cream speaks for itself.
the servers are young, but they are GOOD at their job… they don’t just scoop ice cream and serve it. they do it with charm and a smile. staffers here seem to genuinely like chilling and delivering on the unstated promise of great product and service. they don’t try to upcharge here. they do make suggestions when asked. and they have a sense of humor as they laugh it up with customers. i will say that 90s rap and alternative music (which is now classic rock!) blazing throughout the store are older than most of the employees – whether they are lip-​syncing to WU-​TANG or singing along to Red Hot Chili Peppers. lol.
PRO TIP: not sure if it’s active, but there used to be a Unilocal check-​in coupon as well as SCOUT MOB coupon for Davey’s. It was like 50% up to 5 dollars or something. WORTH IT!

I came here as a quick stop-​by before meeting up with a friend. The staff were really nice with trying flavors, so I got to try several. I ended up with the speculoos flavor, but it quickly got old with more licks.
Wouldn’t come back here — there are so many better ice cream shops in the city.

Cute little ice cream shop that has the all-​American atmosphere.
Came on a Friday night and there wasn’t a line, but more people came in after we ordered. They had a couple of interesting flavors, but the selection wasn’t as diverse as other ice cream shops. The prices are comparable to other places: $ 4.50 for a single scoop and $ 5.00 for two smaller double scoops.
They employees were really nice about trying flavors. My friend and I each tried a couple and shared with each other so we got to try a lot of the flavors. I opted to get the Speculoos Chocolate Chip while my friend ordered the Cookies & Cream and Black Sesame. The Speculoos was great when I tried a small bite of it, but an entire cone was too much: it was a very dry flavor and I quickly got tired of it. My friend’s cone was pretty typical. If you want a pan-​Asian flavor I would recommend going to Sundaes and Cones over Davey’s. In retrospect, I wish I had gotten the Roasted Pistachio flavor. It was definitely one of the better flavors I tried!
I don’t think I would go out of my way to come back here, but if I passed by I would drop in again.

I love ice cream folks, as in, it’s very legitimately one of my true joys in life, and for a very, very long time, there have been two establishments in this country that in my experience embody everything that’s right with ice cream in this world:

Well, it’s time to make room for New York’s own Davey’s Ice Cream on the podium, because this was among the best dessert experiences of my life.
Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere?
Davey’s is a humble traditional ice cream spot when compared to the two establishments that I listed above, but I absolutely love that. The servers at Davey’s were not only fast and friendly, but exceptionally knowledgeable and truly passionate about the ice cream they were dishing up. Unprompted, my server went as far as to tell me the exact process of how they made some of their flavors, which made the experience all the better. Star Granted.
Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost?
If there was any point during my experience at Davey’s that made me hesitate for a hot second, it was when I digested how much I was about to pay for an ice cream sandwich. $ 7.25? As in, seven dollars and twenty five cents? A comparable sum to what I’d pay for maybe two gallons of Blue Bell back in Dallas? Yikes. But okay, hold on, I can get past this. How big is this portion of ice cream? It’s huge. How big are these cookies? They’re big. Is there an added bonus? Yes, those are oreo cookie crumbles encasing my ice cream sandwich. Okay, I’m fine. Is this worth $ 7.25? It absolutely is. Star Granted.
Stars 3 and 4: How was the food?
Oh… oh my… this is special. First and foremost, the house made cookies at Davey’s could be a superstar menu item in their own right, and it’s almost unfortunate that they were relegated to being bookends within my ice cream sandwich, but know that they were very, very good.
It’s the s’mores ice cream that really stole the show here, and it’s a testament to Davey’s that they so wonderfully blend traditional items on their menu with contemporaries that I’d never experienced. My server explained to me that they actually make s’mores start to finish before crushing them into the ice cream, and it tasted very much as though this was the case. Marvelous. It’s rare that I find a flavor that I’ve never had before that I so strongly latch onto, but this was unbelievable.
As if it couldn’t get any better, my ice cream sandwich was encased in oreo cookie crumbles, which honestly just put me over the edge here. Wonderful, I mean just look at that picture. Do it now. Dual Stars Granted.
Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could?
Davey’s ice cream now sits on a winner’s podium with only two other ice cream spots in this country, and I would gladly visit daily. Star Granted.

I had the pistachio and omg so so good. We had a taste of the sesame seed flavor but we weren’t a fan.
The line wasn’t too long and staff were friendly.
If you’re an ice cream addict, you must try this place!

If i could give Davey’s ice cream 6 stars, I would. This was hands down one of the best treats I’ve ever had. For real, if it ain’t Davey’s, ain’t worth it — yeah, the calories are so worth it.

I think novels could be written about the amazingness of the premium frozen treats! You can sample, that’s great– I went for the speculos and chocolate chips and the cookies and cream. There isn’t enough words to describe this thing. I got the $ 6 scoops, comes down to almost a pint hahaha. I ate everything.
More on my flavors though! The speculos was fabulous, with generous chunks of cookies and very thin chocolate chips, more so a form of shaving. Perfection. Just perfect.
The cookies and cream is a classic down ice cream lane and it won’t disappoint. Again, best cookies and cream. Beats any concurrent chain brand, and would win the cookies and cream battle at the best ice cream contest. Just saying.
Got to sample the s’mores one and the toasted pistachio! Fantastic. It will be for another day.
If it ain’t Davey’s, it ain’t worth it! When you see ridiculous lines at other stores (think soft serve rainbow ice cream) you really gotta think most people are deranged.

Housemade ice cream, count me in!!!
I sampled a few flavors that stood out to me– S’mores, Speculoos, and Mexican vanilla. Mexican vanilla was OK it tasted like a run-​of-​the-​mill vanilla flavor. The other two were delicious! They both were packed with mix-​ins– they clearly don’t skimp on their stuff here. I ended up going with a scoop of the Chocolate Chocolate (exactly how it sounds, but not too decadent) and Speculoos on a sugar cone. I devoured my scoops in what felt like 5 seconds. I also tried my friend’s cookies and cream, and like the other flavors, it was choc-​FULL of mix-​ins (which were cookies in this one obvi). Delicious!
The workers here are very friendly and informative. They also offer certain flavored pops (Thai Tea!), ice cream sandwiches, etc. Great option when you’re taking a summer stroll in East Village!

S’morez is the way to go! You can taste all the delicious components. Shared a single split of s’morez and black sesame and it was amazing. The sesame was definitely reminiscent of the sesame oil used in cooking, but still a tasty choice. The second time we came, we got the ice cream sandwich. DO IT! They grab two soft, chewy cookies and put a giant scoop of ice cream (of your choice) in it. One of the most amazing things I have ever eaten.

TBH, i was on the way to another ice cream spot and i was lured into Davey’s instead. haha.
once we got in, we were quickly greeted by the staff. everyone was super friendly and kept offering to give us samples to try. i tried the roasted pistachio and black sesame, both were excellent! in the end, i got single scoop of roasted pistachio because it had SO MUCH pistachio bits, wonderful pistachio aroma, super creamy, and the best part? IT’S NOT OVERLY SWEET!~ hooray, it was so awesome!!!
the scoops were huge too, definitely could be split between two ppl. and for 50 cents more, i believe they can do two flavors, in smaller scoops. hint: the staff said that pistachio and black sesame goes very well together! while this place doesn’t replace my other faves in EV (everyone has that ONE signature item that just beats out the rest), Davey’s will be in my steady ice cream rotation from now on!

Hmmm… so, I generally like the décor and the friendliness of the staff. I came in and tried a bunch of flavors: Mexican Vanilla (so named because the vanilla bean is from Mexico not because it has a distinct flavor), Roasted Pistachio (roasted to a nice nuttiness, but with some of the green-​meat flavor and chew of raw pistachios), and Black Sesame.
Honestly, I wasn’t overwhelmed by any particular flavor. They were all solid, no complaints, but nothing that would pull me back to the place, either. I asked the server if there was a flavor he thought was their best and he said the Black Sesame and I agree that it was good. But I’ve had better versions of that flavor (like the Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory, for example, which is nuttier/​crunchier or Il Laboratorio del Gelato which has smoother/​more blended and also a deeper, nuttier black sesame). Prices here are also more expensive ($ 3.50 for a kiddie cone), so I guess I expected more.
Solid ice cream, just didn’t taste anything that would make me go out of my way to come back. But, maybe it was just the particular flavors they had went I went in. Kind of torn, so I’m giving them 3.5 stars.

I think the pictures and reviews are better than the actual ice cream. Their ice cream has too much ‘ice’ and not enough ‘cream’ in my opinion.
I got a scoop of the strawberry swirl and a scoop of the Mexican vanilla, but couldn’t even tell the difference between this vanilla and regular vanilla. Real Mexican vanilla tastes very, very different than regular vanilla. The best Mexican vanilla ice cream maker in the country in my opinion is Amy’s Ice Cream in Austin, Texas, and unfortunately, Davey’s version doesn’t even come close in comparison. In fact, they really shouldn’t even be marketing it as ‘Mexican’ vanilla cause it contains very little Mexican vanilla beans (probably due to cost as Mexican vanilla beans are very expensive).
I also tried a few other flavors — the speculoos chocolate chip and the whiskey cinnamon bun, which were good, but nothing spectacular as they all had too much ice. I think the problem is that they’re churning their ice cream a little too fast and allowing too much air to get into the cream, resulting a lighter vs denser ice cream.
Go to Van Leeuwen instead or Emack & Bolio’s or Big Gay, all of which make better quality ice cream, in my opinion.
