A spa for the hair! It was relaxing because it was during the day, so it wasn’t packed. Also, I didn’t feel rushed because they booked my appointment for two hours. One of the best parts was the lounge chair when washing your hair. You’re actually laying down. And the scalp massage was so exquisite, I could’ve fallen asleep. Anyway, my hairdresser took her time to know what I wanted and guide me along the way with my questions or requests. Then she gave me tips on how to keep the volume in my hair. And best part was that she didn’t push any product. Overall, I will return and maybe take some additional risks next time. I may just try highlights or going shorter.

Larry Bianco is master color artist! I have been going to him for years and never question his judgment because he is totally correct in even the most minor changes to my hair. He is always delightful, intelligent, and I look forward to my monthly appointment. All of his clients who I have met say the same thing – they can’t live without Larry!

Oh yeah! Finally walked into a salon full of my tribe… curly girls! They were so knowledgeable about curls… how to cut ‘em, care for them and cultivate them. Cannot recommend this experience enough. Sophia was my stylist and she was terrific.

I was incredibly satisfied with my visit to Devachan last March. So much so, I think it’s worth writing about now. I made a mistake — I showed up one week earlier than my appointment because I messed up the dates in my planner. When I was told my appointment was for the next week, I understood. But then the receptionist kindly offered to see if Melissa was available anyway. I figured, why not? Melissa came out and said she could squeeze me in and seemed totally fine with it. I really appreciated it as I was so excited to get what I figured would be a good hair cut.
And I did! Melissa was sweet and helpful. I left with a lot more knowledge about how to keep my hair hydrated. When I went to Sephora later that day to purchase DevaCurl products, the cashier complimented my hair. I’m looking forward to my next appointment! It was expensive, but Melissa told me I don’t need many haircuts a year — even just one would suffice, so it works out well. And it’s worth actually having a good haircut for once and not worrying about some random person ruining my hair (as they have time and time again.)

Today I returned to Devachan Salon but at the Broome Street location. After swearing up and down that I’d never return. I returned due to my hair reacting poorly to a product and matting and they had the only appt that worked with my schedule. I am so glad I made the choice to give them a second chance. My stylist showed me which products work with my hair. I walked out feeling like I learned how to better treat my head of curls. The reason I gave 3 stars instead of 4 is because the knots she couldn’t get out I’m pretty sure she was tearing my hair instead of using scissors to cut the knots. I paid 45 $ plus tip for detangling.

Devachan was a godsend for me. I’ve always struggled in terms of handling my very curly hair. After visiting this salon I feel like I’ve finally figured it out! When I arrived, I was greeted at door and offered a drink. Loved that. Then I met my stylist, Mia. She was AMAZING.
She took her time asking me what I was looking for and what I struggled with and she seemed to listen to exactly what I was saying because I LOVED my haircut and style. She took her time cutting my hair, literally curl by curl, so go with plenty of time! Her assistant was wonderful, kept asking if I wanted anything to drink. Mia then washed my hair and talked me through what she was doing so that I could replicate the styling at home. Then I was escorted to the dryer and then she talked me though the end process.
All in all, LOVE THIS SALON, AND LOVE MIA! Very worth the $$$.

Let me tell ya my hairstylist Melanie is the
. I’ve been getting my hair cut at Devachan for at least 3 years now. No disappointments whatsoever. My haircut and style w/​Melanie is $ 80. I use their products HEAVEN in HAIR product among other one as well. I have never been pressed by anyone to buy their products. The best experience besides the actual haircut which is getting your hair cleansed. When they cleanse your hair it is done while you are laying down. YES… laying down. I wish I could get my hair cleansed at Devachan weekly… NO LIE. I currently use the Decadence products which my hair loves better than the older products as this has more slip. I just got another cut yesterday and added bangs this time around. Oh and if you are looking to add some Pintura highlights o check out Melissa she did a phenomenal job with my hair earlier this year. I go about 2 to 3 times a year to maintain my cut but it’s not necessary if you want to grow it long. I just like my hair in a layered look.
I have brought so many family and friend to the Dark Side… 4 to be exact. My two aunts and BFF also see Melanie and have even done a big chop in January 2012. If you wear your hair natural please come to Devachan Salon and learn the curly girl method. They cut on dry hair… yes dry. Why you ask because obviously when our hair is wet its not in its natural state. Wet hair is longer therefore you will not get the most accurate cut. When your hair is cut dry you don’t have to worry about losing length unless you really want to go short, like I did. Devachan Salon is very clean and you can use their iPad while you get serviced. The lemonade is very refreshing as well.

This review is specifically in reference to a cut that I got from Hellic, a stylist at the Broome St. Salon, who was incredibly inattentive and rude. I have had Devacuts in other places before and decided to go to the actual flagship salon for a birthday haircut. Getting my haircut has always been a stressful experience as a curly girl. I was excited to try something new with a specialized stylist at Devachan, who I thought I could trust. However, when I gave Hellic the photo that I wanted to get my hair cut like he ignored it, instead asking if I had ever been to the salon before. I said I hadn’t but explained I’d had my hair cut by Devachan trained stylists in other places. He paid no attention and treated me as if I had no idea what to do with my own hair which I’ve been taking care of well by myself for years!
I had washed and detangled my hair the night before so I could have it dry when I came in as they request you to, but as anyone with curly hair knows curls have a mind of their own and get a little tangled just by existing, and my hair is also very fine which leads to tangling. Hellic didn’t try to make small talk with me or ask me what kind of cut I wanted but instead said he would detangle my hair. After pulling all my curls apart without cutting them he informed me that because my hair was so tangled (which it was not!) that he had to charge a $ 75 detangling fee! I was so shocked I didn’t know what to say. He proceeded to finish «detangling» and then barely trimmed my hair before sending me off to have it washed. The woman who washed my hair was very friendly and when I asked her what the detangling fee meant she said it was usually for people who had impossibly matted hair.
I really enjoyed the wash and that part was definitely what I expected the salon experience to be. When I got out of the dryer my hair was barely different, and it took Hellic half an hour to come over and check on me before I was able to leave. Even the assistant stylists were apologetic that it took him so long. Other than being drowned in product my hair hardly changed and the entire appointment cost $ 250. If they want your hair to be dry for the appointment they should expect it to have some knots. And in the end I didn’t get a cut I loved because Hellic never asked, he just assumed he knew best.
I left completely traumatized and disillusioned with Devachan.

Going to the Soho Devachan Salon was an amazing experience that I highly recommend all curly haired girls to have at least once. After doing the big chop in June, I didn’t really know how to take care of my hair and what to do with it. My friend recommended I go to Devachan when I was looking for salons to give me a fresh look. The services they offer not only transform your curls but educate you on how best to care for your hair once you leave.
When you arrive, you may check your coat in and receive a satin robe. As you slip on your satin robe, you are offered water or tea, served in a champagne flute, while you wait to for your appointment. My appointment started right on time, a welcomed surprise when the norm is the expectation of you waiting hours to be seen. My stylist, Jackie, spoke with me to learn my current styling habits and lifestyle to provide me with an appropriate cut. She educated me with best practices on how to care for my hair. Once the cut was complete, I was walked over to the washing stations where her assistant Latoya washed my hair. I laid on a bed (not a chair) while I received a wash and much needed scalp and neck massage. Continuing with their focus on educating, Latoya walked me through the products she used, why they were used, and how to use them. I was even given a mirror to see exactly how she was detangling my hair with her fingers. I felt comfortable asking questions and confident I could repeat the steps at home. Once I was done I sat under the dryer and drank water while my hair was drying. I thought it was really great that they didn’t use a lot of tools. Outside of a pair of scissors and pins, my curls sprang to life in a way I never saw doing a twist out. I was a little skeptical about the end results but those fears quickly went away when the dryer head rose. After 30 mins of drying, Jackie fluffed out my hair and I was good to go! (Just in case you were wondering, I was in and out in exactly 2 hours, with no wait time between services.) Before checkout you are given a list of products used that session in case you want to purchase. I didn’t feel pressured at all to purchase the products they used, the end result was enough. After checking out (with my new goodies in tow) I grabbed my coat, walked outside, and felt a confidence I’d been missing since I first did the big chop.
Highlights: Clean and welcoming environment that will care for your hair and educate you on how to maintain its treatment at home. Price was on the expensive side from most but comparable to other salons of this caliber and a great value given the level of service provided and the outcome. Services vary from wash and styles, cuts, and color.

I have done so much to my hair within the past five years that it has finally caught up to me. Prior to going to Devachan, my hair was so dry and felt like hay every time I washed it. I tried many hair masks and nothing seemed to work. Finally I researched and found Deva. I was so excited that it was a salon dedicated to curly hair. Other salons I’ve been to literally seem to not know how to deal with curly hair. So I booked a deep conditioning treatment with Latoya. Let me say, it was fantastic. Latoya walked me through everything she was putting and doing to my hair and gave me a lot of helpful tips on how to keep my hair hydrated and how to make my hair last days in between washes since we shouldn’t wash our hair everyday. I watched how she detangled my hair and the amount of product she put in. She then showed me how to style it: types of product, clips for volume, etc. She put me under the dryer for 20 min and shook my hair out when it was done. I haven’t seen my hair look this good in a long time. I was soooo excited! I then paid and left. I am going to see how the products last in my hair before I decide to purchase but will definitely be getting the mask.
I’m hesitant about cutting my hair here due to the other posts about whack jobs BUT the conditioning treatments are a must!

My experience at devachan was subpar. Was it worth the price for my service? No. Would I come back? Probably. You see your stylist (I had a senior stylist) for about 10 – 15 mins tops for your whole duration there. The woman that washed my hair also styled my hair. When you first come in, The stylist gets you from the waiting area and gives you your robe to wear. She asks you what you want to do with your hair. I wanted to keep my length but was more concerned about a better shape so I told her cut as much as needed. She didn’t cut much off which I didn’t mind. She said she will do more cutting at the end if needed after the wash and styling. I asked her what my curl type was and the porosity of it. She told me my hair was «curly» (I was kind of confused, I mean I know my hair is curly or I would not be here getting a curly hair cut at devachan. I expected her to tell me like 3b or something?) and high porosity. I sat with her in the chair for about 6 – 7 mins. (I wasn’t offered anything to drink.) After that she walked me to the washing area. The woman who washed my hair was great. She was very informative and told me what my hair needed and wanted. It was very relaxing and I loved that she was telling me what I should do that is best for my hair. She really took her time in letting me know and not steering me in the wrong direction. She also styled my hair and made sure to style it the way I wanted. Asking me if I like my hair with more volume or tamed. She asked me if I wanted ice tea or water. (The ice tea is amazing!) I went under the dryer for about 25 mins and my stylish returned. By this time is was a little over an hour and a half since I came in for my appointment. She cut a little bit more and gave me her card and I was on my way. Overall, I think my hair looked less curly than when I walked in and basically the same. It was more layered but the shape was overall the same. I showed her pictures of what I wanted and what shape I thought would look good but all she really did was trim it a little bit. I basically had the same hair style I walked in with, with less frizz. The amount I paid wasn’t worth it to me for what I got. Maybe I will try another stylist if decide to come back.

I have nothing but good things to say about Devachan. I went for my very first appointment about a month ago, and my hair looks better every day! Not only did I love my haircut, but the tips and tricks they gave me along the way educated me about my hair in a way that most salons don’t bother trying to do. I feel confident with my new hair and I already can’t wait to go back! Love all the products too, I’m always hitting up Sephora as soon as I run out. Thanks Devachan!
Side note, I did see a senior stylist. For me, it’s worth the extra money to look fabulous.

I’m so disappointed as I wanted to love this place as much as the other reviewers. Unfortunately, I got the worst haircut of my life. My hair started long and curly, and I just needed a trim. But I left with unexpected and uneven short layers jutting up and out, in no discernible pattern. These layers so short that they can’t be pulled back and now I look like the orphan Annie.
Maybe if you work in a creative industry, this could be the place for you to get a boundary-​pushing cut. But I just wanted my unruly curly hair to look semi-​professional in the workplace, and now it is completely untamed and untame-​able because of this cut. And there’s no solution for backward bangs, they have to just grow out. My mother, with a deft maternal touch, just said that what happened to my hair should be a crime. They were definitely nice, but I had hoped the expert curl cut would not leave me having to straighten my hair for the first time in years.

My stylist was attentive and sweet as can be but I noticed that the dry cut Devachan is known for made my hair grow in super wonky.
I can’t speak for their entire line of products because I’ve only had experiences with the ones used on my hair that time around — but what I can say is the products that my stylist used on my hair left my hair super crunchy, my hair turned ash colored when the gel started to flake, and then it took FOREVER to wash it all out. My hair didn’t feel soft again for weeks. I don’t know what the hell happened, but yea, there’s that…
Maybe I’m biased… I’ve been a Ouidad girl for years. They specialize in curly hair and their cuts LAST. I went to Devachan because it was cheaper and claimed to offer the same specialized curly hair love, but they don’t. Ouidad blows Devachan out the water. Cough up the extra $ 40 and get your curls cut at Ouidad and save yourselves months of looking at the mirror in horror at your Devachan cut.

My sister has been coming here for years. I have never been one to wear my hair curly… but there’s a first for everything. The staff here is friendly informative and extremely charismatic.
They will walk through each step of the process to ensure you can do it at home as well.
I didn’t get a cut but i did however get my hair styled. The stylist name is Brian. he literally gave my hair life! Men, women, boys or girls… if you want enjoy your curly hair pay them a visit… Brian will give you what he calls CURL-​COURGMENT!

I’ve been debating writing this review since I was at the salon, but with a heavy heart have decided to do so.
After watching numerous Youtube videos and reading about the Curly Girl Method and Lorraine Massey herself, I was looking forward to finally having the opportunity to have my hair styled at a Devachan Salon as I was slated for a business trip in NYC. So I made an appointment with what I was told was a very experienced stylist for my curl type (a combination of spiral curl/​waves and kinky curls) and was excited to see if I could finally achieve my curl dream, a wash n go rather than the pony tail I usually wear.
I don’t remember the name of the stylist, but she and I agreed I needed my hair cut as it had been more than a year, so no problem there. The initial cut was good and the woman who washed my hair was great!
The first problem came while I sat under a hooded dryer. As I limit the heat used on my hair I was a bit uncomfortable with how hot it felt, but decided this was O.K. as well. The dryer turned off, but my stylist wasn’t there so I removed the hood and waited. A few minutes later she arrived but of course only the top of my hair was dry so she used a blow dryer to complete the drying process.
Perhaps my expectations where too high going in but I expected that she would fluff and separate my curls with the blow dryer attachment rather than simply placing it on top of my hair so that when the products applied dried, my hair felt hard.
As she completed my cut as a I had a few straight ends, we discussed the back of my hair, where it had remained somewhat straight. She suggested I apply conditioner to my dry hair nightly in sections as the hair was simply too undernourished/​dry to accept the product’s applied. She also felt my curl pattern was tighter in the back. I paid, purchased the products used and proceeded to fluff my own hair after I left leaving my hair in a triangle shape. Unfortunately the underside of my hair at the nape of my neck didn’t get enough product and tangled badly.
The problem with applying conditioner to my hair daily is that I am increasing the manipulation of my hair, particularly the more coarse (not more tightly curled) back section of my hair leading to increased opportunities for breakage to hair that is already fragile. This and the drying process are the reasons for my very mixed feelings about my Devachan experience.
The one piece of great advice I got came from the woman who washed my hair who said I needed to train my hair to curl so wearing wash n gos regularly at least for the next month is the plan.
Between the cost of the cut/​style, products, and tips I spent around $ 300! Much, much more than the norm for me. Would I do this again? Only if the stylist was recommended by someone with the same or a similar curl pattern to mine. Otherwise… no.

So I came here on a Thursday, and let me tell you my experience was amazing. This was my first time here, so I was very nervous. I heard about this salon on Unilocal and decided that I was going to do my big chop here. Especially because this salon specializes in curly hair. I called and asked for an experienced stylist and I got Sergio. Let me tell you something he is amazing and styled my hair great. And his assistant Michelle was great too. She washed my hair and it felt so good! And she talked to me about their products and what each products do. She understood my hair texture and made sure my curls were defined. And Sergio talked me through everything because I was very nervous and anxious. But my short cut came out amazing and brought the products they recommend me.
Also being that Sergio is a Senior Stylist, the price is $ 109 and tip is you want to. I tipped because they’re great!
Ps. I will be coming back for my 6 – 8 months update!

Came in on a Tuesday morning for my very first visit. My mother reccommended me to this salon since I’ve been trying to go au natural for the last few months. My stylist was Sergio and assistant was Angela. Both. AMAZING. Sergio asked me questions as he snipped away my bad frazzled ends. The front part of my hair is more wavy than curly from heat processing but whatever magic he and Angela used worked on me and I’m IN LOVEEEE with my curls! Angela knows everything about everything in the world of curls and Deva Curl products. I walked around Soho for the rest of the day and got compliments all around.
The salon itself is also very warm and welcoming, reception is so smiley and happy. Will def be back again!

First, the quick and dirty details:
I scheduled an appointment with Louis (full stylist), and also met Tatiana (she did the washing/​drying portion). Both were very knowledgable, patient with my questions, and very thorough in explaining what they were doing, why, what my hair type and texture is, what products work best and why, and tips for when I would be taking care of my ‘doo’ on my own. Overall, I was really impressed and had a wonderful experience! It was pricy, but totally worth it for a cut that actually works for my hair type (these ladies know curls). If you have curly hair, you need to go here!
Now, for some more background:
I am a curly-​girl noob. I have had pin-​straight hair my entire life, until three years ago when it randomly started getting this weird wave in the back. Fast forward to now, and I have a whole head of waves– however (as I learned from Louis), I actually have three textures in my hair. The back has the tightest waves, the sides/​front are looser with less structure, and a small portion underneath along my hairline is still straight.
Let me just put it this way– I had these waves (and sometimes curls), but absolutely no idea how to manage them. For the past two years I’ve tried all types of ‘curl boosting’ and/​or moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, mousses, gels, creams, etc. No matter what I did, regardless of how much product I did or did not use, how much I did not did not scrunch my hair and use a diffuser, my waves/​curls would flop. By mid-​morning my hair would look flat and messy, with a few random clumps that had more waviness than others. And, it probably didn’t help that when I did get a haircut every now and then, all of the stylists would wet my hair and cut it like normal– which until recently, I thought was the only way to cut hair… even for us ‘curly girls’. Therefore, both my style and my products were not ideal. But I had no idea!
I got frustrated to the point that I finally started doing some research online, which is where I found some videos by Devachon. I was impressed with their videos and the idea behind their products– after reading more reviews on various sites and figuring out that these products work for WAVY hair and not just CURLY hair, I ordered them. And loved them.
So, two weeks later, despite the improvement in my hair with the Deva Curl products, I was still frustrated with my cut and scheduled an appointment at Devachon. And I’m SO GLAD I did! Yes, it was pricy: it was $ 125 for my particular stylist, not including tips. A junior stylist is only $ 80, but book two to three weeks in advance– I didn’t have the patience for that, haha. But it was totally worth it. I now have a cut for my type and texture hair that suits the frame of my face, isn’t sagging, and *brings my waves to life*!
I learned even more about how to care for my hair and what products to use. I will DEFINITELY go back to Devachon when I need another cut in 2 – 5 months. I’ve already gotten a ton of compliments on my hair, and have referred my fellow ‘curly girl’ friend to go ASAP!

Have been coming here for haircuts since 2007. Made the mistake of having my haircut elsewhere since then but one time, and what a mistake that was. This place is seriously a curly girl’s heaven. From the attention paid to each curl while dry when you walk in, to the service you’re given with your wash and the implicit love for embracing your inner curl, there is no other option.
Their products rock– worth every penny, and every stylist I’ve had has been great. From Lois, to Susan, and Melanie, you can’t go wrong here. The only mistake you can take, is to put off this trip any longer. You owe it to yourself to see how your curls can bounce!
If you’re on a budget, ask for a junior stylist. They are awesome (about $ 80). I recently used Melanie, a junior stylist and was not disappointed. And prices vary greatly, based on stylist. Ask about pricing in advance. Have fun!
