I have never dyed my hair at the salon before, but I felt that ATO should be the place for me to do it. I had a nursing graduation coming up and I wanted something completely different. Aven was doing my hair with another nice guy. I was a bit nervous since I haven’t gotten anything like this on my hair before (which is a gray ombré btw) but she explained every step to me and what she will be doing next. Aven is such a sweetheart! I love her positivity and she takes her work seriously and does not rush it.
I am happy that I came to ATO and I will see her again soon in two months to get my hair toned up.

Very good service, but waiting time is not short.

New season means new color… so I went to get my roots retouched and balayage done. I asked for subtle caramel and that’s what I got and look 5yrs younger too！It was worth a good 4hrs for the whole process plus wash and blowdry. But so glad Aven was able to squeeze me in for 12:30 appt and they were non-​stop since then but they didn’t skimp out or rush, we even bought Thai take outs for lunch (yey!) By end of summer I’ll revert to darker tone, but for now I’ll enjoy «milk tea» tone

I came to ATO salon for a hair cut on a Sunday at 4pm without any appointment and they took me right away.
My experience there started very well with a shampoo/​conditioner/​massage that was very relaxing, then Sam did exactly the haircut I wanted.
Everybody was very friendly and the icing on the cake, the whole package, shampoo+haircut+blowdry cost me only 50 $+tax and tips. Hard to find quality hairdresser for that price in NYC!
I definitly recommand that place.

I have not color my hair in 5 years; and very adamant about changing my natural hair color. My
Stylist Aven was great and suggested many options and her reasons for it. She was helpful and a very good listener, she was willing to listen to my opinion and provided feedbacks. I love my new hair color and new cut; it’s subtle but perfect for summer. Thank you !

My hair was legit gross af before I came into ATO. It was red-​orangeish/​brassy at the ends and my roots, black as the bottom of a sinkhole. I got a bayalage done with ombré and honestly I am so happy with it. The ends are ash blonde with some grey tints and there’s caramel weaving throughout my hair.
Lisa (the stylist) was such a pro, getting my hair to look good. She and Lily (god bless them) worked on my hair for like 6 hours (I have so much freakin’ hair)
Lisa’s the best cause you can tell her what you want and she’ll give you all kinds of advice — whether or not the color works or even suggests alternatives to get the look you’re envisioning.
And Lily is amazing, she is so patient and gave me an excellent head massage. 100% would go back just for that.
ALSO, Lisa can curl your hair like nobody’s business. I legit look like a princess.

This is for Hair Stylist Ava/​Aven (however you say her name) and the Male receptionist/​owner type person. I went in a few days ago to get my Roots touched up. I asked for how much it would be BOTH IN PERSON after my 2^nd time visit and on the phone.
INSTEAD — this is what happened: THEY CHARGED me TWO TIMES MORE for Single Process and all this other stuff. AND THEY COMPLETELY Changed my hair color. I had a nice darkish blonde and walked out with a DIFFERENT COLOR.
I am VERY UNHAPPY with the service and will never be back again. Plus, Ava just grew more rude each time of visit. Very unhappy spending soo much money and getting a look I didnt ask for.
I JUST WANTED TO have my roots touched. NOT HAVE MY WHOLE COLOR AND LOOK CHANGED.

Came in here on Sunday to receive a full head of bayalage, cut and blow out. Right off the bat the hostess did not manage my expectations when it came to time and money. I showed Sam, my colorist, a picture of the bayalage that I wanted. We decided on a color and he began to apply the bleach.
During this time, I’m not sure if Sam didn’t let the bleach sit long enough, or, if whatever toner they used wasn’t correct. But, I left the salon with the most subtle, thin, highlights. These highlights are also an ashy GREEN and grey, not blonde-​ish.
I’ve gotten bayalage and ombré for the past four years, and this is by far the worst technical skill I’ve ever received. The salon did NOT own up to any of their faults when I expressed my frustration, no discounts, no apologies, nothing. They continued to show me that they colored my hair — as if this was the achievement of the day. I will not be coming back here. Nor will I recommend ATO Salon’s services to any friends or family.

I was looking for a new salon & glad that I took a chance on them based on previous Unilocal reviews. I had a relaxing day getting my new hair color and style by Aven. She gave me some highlights w/​ombré and it came greater than I’ve expected. Everyone was so friendly and I love the overall experience including the décor and aesthetics of the salon was just plain cool. Love Ato!

I came in wanting a blonde-​ish ombré balayage. But I have typical Asian hair, dark and hard to bleach. After about 4 hours of bleach, my hair turned hot orange (I knew what to expect)
I asked Aven to take a silvery lavender route instead of blonde. And she gave me this gorgeous head of Taro Hair! I love it :) Thank you Aven

It’s my first time review on Unilocal and want to thank to Aven’s help to arrange my very messy and damaged hair. She is professional and experienced, the new style is exactly what I am looking for! I have tried various salons already and this is definitely the best one. Fabulous experience and will only do my hair here in the future!

Because Ato hair salon is located at lower Manhattan, it is a big travel for me to come from Queens. Therefore, I get my hair bend trimmed at near by Queens sometimes. Compare others with Aven, Aven is the best hair stylist to work with my hair so far. Although you tell her how you want your hair to be done, Aven still gives you give some suggestions from her point of view. She does not only listen to what customers want, but she is a very creative hair stylist. I am here to recommend you should go to Ato salon to see Aven. You won’t regret it!

It was amaaaaaaaaaaaaazing, again. It was my second visit, and Sherly did my hair this time. She is such a professional and knows exactly what I want. Also, Lily gave me a head massage when she washed my hair. Yesterday was freezing outside and she gave me a hot towel to warm up. So thoughtful! Thank you so much for such a pleasure time.
I have recommended Ato to many friends and they all satisfied as I did. Will try colouring next time.

As much as I would love to give them a top review, I have to say after the advice they told me just made the hair look worse. I don’t know if there was a lost in translation, but I specifically asked if they used olaplex in my hair. The receptionist had to translate for sheri, and lili but I never really got a definite answer. I asked for a balayage ombré look that went to pink. I understand that my hair couldn’t lift to my desired effect, so I asked for an alternative. I asked for a black to silver. I know my hair was difficult to work with, but I don’t think the solution was to turn my hair into a dark blue black mess. I know that you need to neutralize orange with blue, I am a makeup artist after all. But it’s supposed to be «toned» to silver, not changed to blue.
The color was one thing but the «balayage» was another thing. The thing about two different people working on your hair is that they have different skill sets. One of them was making it look more like an ombré while the other was making it look like a balayage. There was no color melt, at least after the two washes they promised me it would look silver. But the thing with washes is that it also becomes more patchy. If they had done it correctly, this wouldn’t be a problem. I’m sure Sheri would have known this as she was skeptical that my hair would tone correctly, but I don’t think she could have expressed that to me due to language barriers.
I will not be returning to this Salon for the poor «balayage.» I would not recommend Sheri or lilli of you have a difficult hair history with colors.

Aven is a true expert.
I knew that I wanted a big change, and I had an idea in my head as to what I wanted (some kind of ombré bayalage). However, I didn’t know exactly and I didn’t look for pictures (kind of made an appointment on a whim).
Went in and Aven looked through Pinterest to see what might look good on me. I saw her looking at Pinterest, back at me, and shaking her head no (to herself) until she found something that she thought would look good on me. It’s obvious that she has a good eye and wanted to tailor her work to my desires and what would look good on me.
My friend also went full blonde and because it didn’t originally turn out how she wanted it, Aven kindly fixed it for her for free. It looks great now!
The only reason why I docked a star was because the girl at reception, as nice as she is, seems a bit confused. For example, she told me a price and when I asked her to break down the costs for me, it didn’t make any sense. I had to ask her to explain several times (and I’m good at math) so it took her several tries to get the cost break down correct (because I had pointed out inconsistencies from what she had previously told me). Also, she told my friend that she called to move her appointment when she never did! My friend went in and she had to wait an extra hour because of all the confusion.
They accept credit card, but gratuity is cash only, so make sure to have cash on hand.

I’m not one to write reviews, good nor bad. However, after searching for so many years for a good colorist, and finally finding someone who gets what I’ve asked for, and exceeded my expectations, I just had to write one just for this salon.
Aven is amazing, and listens. Im not one to easily please, I have extremely high expectations, but she is beyond talented. Finding someone that understands, and knows how to color Asian hair, and make it just the right blonde tone, is extremely rare.
The first time I went, I had ruined my own color, and she fixed it as best as she could. I wasn’t in love, but know she fixed it as best as she could for what damage I had done. This second time, after she had fixed it the first time, was astounding. I absolutely love it, and recommend her to everyone.
Love her confidence and knowledge, and her work matches her words. She can walk the talk!

Came here because I done fucked up my hair! It really didn’t look all that bad but it was pretty terrible, like for example how a pancake can look appealing but it’s actually still too doughy in the middle and that’s how my hair was. It was a textural mess!!!
I gave up dating guys recently and I took on home self improvement «projects» like dying my hair clown nose red and home perming with whatever (wrong type) hair rollers I had on hand. Then there were the bangs which I just decided on a whim to cut. This I found pretty ez when using a pizza box to catch all of the fallen hairs (thx Margherita’s). Yet Mcguyvering my looks in every area probly wasnt a good idea but I didn’t care until…
NOW. I totally care and I want to look good again so I looked up some salons on everyone’s favorite search aide and found Aven: cutter and colorist at Ato! She made my hair look beautiful when I was in total denial b4. I thought I didn’t need help but I definitely needed help.
Im really into this salon because it’s accessible, affordable and it was very ez to book my appt for the following day. I may come back for their digi perm services but since I home permed not too long ago they advised me to wait half a year. But back to the haircut…
So today when I woke up, I didn’t completely hate my hair and it didn’t look like a messy cousin it, a lil mulletish but I hand smoothed it and it was fine so I was relieved! It’s lookin pretty effin good actually and haircuts sometimes don’t look all that good till a week or so later. Ya’l be knowin I’m sure and now y’all be knowin where I got my haircut if you like it in the pic! And eff you if you don’t!

This is going to be a long review…
My first trip: here I booked my session w/​Aven for Ombré /​Baylage in which was a SIX HOUR PROCESS… I’ve been to dozens of salons and not once where they able to color my hair correctly. & she was the first to try a test strip to see if my hair would dye. (To me, never in my life had I ever had anyone do that prior to coloring my hair) Due to the previous salon whom turned my hair into jet black. It seemed impossible. We both were scared for my hair. But low and behold, Aven is amazing!
Even her hair is phenomenal! She’s extremely sweet, even offer me to have some of her apple she was cutting.
Second trip: weeks later, I didn’t even last a month w/​my new color. I decided to dye it back to my natural color in which was dark only because I wasn’t comfortable w/​it. Nothing at all against Aven. I felt really bad because the process was so long. I’m bi polar when it comes to my hair. Whereas, I would get into a dying hair frenzy and just do it on impulse.
My hair was so dry from the previous process, Aven suggested I get a hair to cut get rid of the damage hair. I was a nervous wreck even though I okayed it. I told her I wanted my hair to still be long, heavy at the ends and maybe w/​some layers. So she started snipping away. The more she snip, the more anxious I became. I think she knew and told me don’t worry. So I sucked it up. Surprisingly for the first time in the past 5 plus years I never really had a hair cut. My last hair cut w/​another place messed it up so bad, I left the salon in crying. I actually LOVE my hair cut.
Third trip: here was for a wash & blow dry w/​Aven of course. The lady who washed my hair, AMAZING! & Aven curled my hair.
My fourth: trip I don’t remember but apparently I checked in 4 times lol it probably for a wash & blow dry prior to finding Aven here.
Overall experience. One of the BEST experiences I’ve had in a long time. Aven is a keeper. Don’t leave me. You can tell when someone genuinely cares and she is one of the few in the business.

I was lucky enough to walk past A-​To salon during the weekend. The sign said $ 50 wash and cut, who can beat that? so I gave it a shot.
I can admit that I’m an emotional hair-​cutter… my hairstyle has a major effect on my mood, sense of confidence, and personal style. That being said, it means a lot for me to give a 5 star review! I let the receptionist decide on the stylist– we went with Joy.
I am very happy with my haircut! If you’re looking for a funky, functional short cut, Joy is the stylist to go to. She only works Friday-​Sun so be sure to book her (apparently I got lucky).
Not only was Joy communicative and very clearly experienced, she was sure to give me helpful tips on how to improve upkeep. She is passionate about short hair cuts and I’ll definitely be back to try her coloring skills.
I read through the negative reviews, and I will say that choosing a good hair salon is very important. No matter how many great reviews a place gets you should be clear on what works for you… Are you looking for spa-​like comforts (tea, wine, and massage service while you wait)? Are you looking for an all-​in-​one, or a family style salon?
*** Most importantly you need to go in knowing what you want, and be clear about it. If you notice your new stylist veering away from what you want, let him/​her know! They’re not mind readers and it’s always best to be as descriptive as possible. Visual references help!***
That said no, this isn’t a spa salon, but it was clean, great pricing, accommodates walk-​ins, and they work fast and efficiently. For me these are bonuses! Most of all I was lucky to have a stylist who is passionate about fun short hair, and that was exactly what I was looking for.
