Elite Event @ Juliet Supper Club

I haven’t been to any NYC elite events in a while. I used to think that the ones in Brooklyn were getting a little bit madder every month until I came to this one. (Thanks to Jen O. and Emily C. for taking me in as their +1.)
All and all, I had a good time because I met other awesome Unilocalers (shout out to Windell C., Taj, Juan T., these boys are bananas) and saw those who I haven’t seen in a while (Sarah, with her adorable knit hat; Laura A., always so friendly and warm!; James F.) And of course Peter D. the hard working Unilocal sweetheart. I got free drinks, I tasted food and I got to check out what Juliet Supper Club is all about. Should I dive into the details now?
At the door:
Peter D: «We have met before right?»
Me: «Yes, most of the times @ Brooklyn elite events»
Peter D: «We have met before?»
Me: «Yes, at other events»
Inside of my died a little because the last time I saw Peter D. he told me «Hi! Isabella. yes… I know your name, I remember you.» Last night I came back home and ate a gallon of ice cream since I was so upset by our encounter and I teared down the worship altar I made for him. (Ok, ok. I didn’t do any of that. Peter meets and sees tons, but tons of people all the time. He isn’t a robot*, so we need to cut him some slack)
Upon entry, I met a line right away. Bananas it was just for some hummus and pita? There was two sets, maybe they should have placed it @ different tables because in this situation we are dealing with a huge crowd. (An example of this was the Deity elite event, they had same chips on different tables. It was crowded as hell but there was no line to frustrate people).
The bar was crazy. We took turns to go get drinks, I went around 8pm and seriously it wasn’t that bad at that time. The blond bartender was attentive and polite gave me the drinks I asked for. Certainly, I tipped properly, got my drinks and left my spot for the people behind me. (Note that at a free drinks event, try not to linger around the bar… you are just making the situation worse).
I had a good time thanks to the awesome Unilocal crowd. I know this review is super duper late but whatever. Ha!

I’m super late to the post-​party evaluation. Blame it on the awkward window between one vacation and the next ;) So I was a little skeptical when I saw the space from the outside, but then again — lots in this area fails to impress from the outside.
Usually I come out of an Elite event talking more about the drinks but think Todd English got something right with the bites here! There was a large buffet of hummus and other Mediterranean dips set up in the middle of the restaurant, which might have been a nice idea in theory but led to a massive line snaking back to the entrance. The best was their take on tzatziki — fresh, light, and cucumbery. Wasn’t too much of a fan of their straight hummus and the variations (garlic, pepper, etc).
But I must confess the reason I will at least come back once again is simple — three words. Fried Haloumi Cheese! I could have devoured a large plate piled sky high of this. Very unique. I pulled up the menu and it looks like it’s prepared with a fresh tomato sauce and cinnamon oregano. Well, yeah. It was amazing!
The drinks were good, although again definitely not the highlight. The bartenders didn’t seem aware of what they were at first. When I asked, they screamed back «yeah there’s a RUM DRINK. And a TEQUILA DRINK» — helpful. Once I scrounged up a copy of the list of special drinks from someone slammed up against me, all that was settled. The margarita was nice as was the whiskey drink they were serving.
I’m sad though I missed the electric slide! Advance warning next time please? Great job on the planning side guys. Good pick.

Unilocal! put together another slammin’ affair. Though I didn’t care for the space (one bar?). But when I tried a couple of toxic margherita’s I was on board. The food? Eh. But we were warned by Jane that it will be «bites», not a full course meal. So we planned to have a lite meal afterwards. The music was OK and not blasting enough that you couldn’t talk.
This had to be the most crowded Unilocal!Elite party yet. I thin

I’m totally ROFL-​coptering at all these reviews. I just have to yell NEWBS! at the people complaining about the food and drinks, because the peeps in my crew were well-​fed and well-​boozed, cuz we knows the tricks, yo. (Tipping won’t get you jack, menacing the bartender’s family before the crowds hit will get you blasted!)

I can’t lie. This wasn’t my favorite venue and I totally bailed on my +1 (the infamous Steve M.), Roddy, and Mog because it was just too much for me. The best part of the evening was chatting with Jane and Peter on my way out. I love you guys, never change! And Jane reminded me that I really prefer the smaller events, so I think I’ll stick to those.
The second best part was snagging a half-​dozen carrot cupcakes from Billy’s on my way home. Holla!

So my review is late… damn
So I read some reviews… can you say SPOILED. like really…
Call this phenomenon «there is no where to go but down when you are on top».
Unilocal events have always been pretty well put together on the part of the Unilocal staff. In fact, they are great at it. So when there is something that isnt amazing, it is amplified, even when by any other standard, it would have been fine.
I consistently read through the reviews and I have noticed a trend, and that trend is consistently that some venues aren’t ready for the level of service that Unilocalers expect. Nor are they ready for the logistics.
The irony is, from what I understand, it was this very kinda situation that led to the separation of reviews from Unilocal events from normal venue reviews.
I was rather unhappy with the bar, and took the time to meet some great new people. But my night was not ruined. I still had a nice time at a nice event. I did think the bartenders sucked. I thought it sucked that when I got to the bar, after waiting almost an hour, the whole time at least speaking to Unilocalers, they changed their drink rules. boo to you.
But seriously, I haven’t seen an ounce of constructive criticism here. Who is going to read this 53^rd review anyway.
To those of you who are still here, this far in, let me share something with you… In life there are leaders and there are politicians… politicians point out flaws and weakness so that they can get ahead. leaders point out weakness to make someone stronger, to help them, so that we can all get ahead.
Which one are you? If you are going to point out bad things, take off stars, etc, for Unilocal events, the price you should have to pay, is to give some constructive feedback.
Food was decent. I didn’t get to spend the time i would have liked to with many people, one in particular who said I was rude. for that I am sorry myself. I met a couple of nice new people and look forward to the next event.

Am I walking so far west that I’ll wind up in the Hudson River?

My first elite event and I’m hungry (and thirsty) for more. Many thanks to Jane K and Peter D for making it all happen.
I was slightly apprehensive about the Juliet Supper Club based on previous reviews but the space was actually comfortable. The snacks were tasty, the JSC staff kept the drinks flowing even if there was a huge line and the Ghiradelli chocolates were great.

Tons of pita chips with various types of hummus doesn’t really help hungry Unilocalers. Long wait for alcohol doesn’t do it either. I was a little shocked it took so long to get 1 drink and chips.
The venue seems fancy and nice but since I only got to sample hummus and some skewers, I couldn’t say it is worth the money to dine here. I saw $ 20 shwarma on the menu but all I could think about is Mamoun’s $ 5 lamb shwarma!~

WOW, drunk is an understatement to the way I felt leaving Juliet Supper Club. Jane and Peter once again brought it! We got there early enough to grab 2 drinks each without hitting a line, and grabbed a booth upstairs pretty easily. The room was full by the time we went out to scope the food. I am sad to say that I never made it through the line where the hummus and babaganoush were, but did have a small taste of Kendra T.s. The chicken was a bit bland, and the phylo dough was missing a filling if you asked me, but the drinks were awesome! The cheese that was going around was amazing (best passed hors d’oeuvres)!
The ladies at my table asked me to round up some male Unilocalers to fill up the rest of our booth, but as I made it to the bar, someone lied to me and told me I was about to take a bite of the delicious cheese… and I ended up biting into mahi mahi. It was impossible for me to feel sexy breathing on someone after this moment. So, we sent someone else.
I think it’s safe to say I tried each of the Gin drinks, more than once. By the end of the night, we were ordering one of the Collins, and one of the Champagne mixer each, and creating our own mixture (it was quite delicious). I had a blast, met new Unilocal Elite, and partied with seasoned Eliters. Sure, the lines were ridiculous, but you can’t help that. There was only one bar! Great night!

While it pains me to give any Elite event a less than stellar review, this venue deserves such. It all started when I first approached the bar. Luckily, I arrived early enough that I could walk right up.
me: «What are your speciality drinks tonight?»
Bartender: «Um, I don’t really know, it’s kinda crazy in here!»
me: «Okay, so you don’t know what you’re serving?»
Bartender: «No, not really, I just got here. I think Tom Collins.»
me: «Okay, I’ll have a Tom Collins and my friend will have that (points to pink drink)»
Bartender: «I don’t know what that drink is.»
me: «You don’t know? Are these drinks you don’t normally serve on any given night?»
Bartender: «I don’t really know, I just got here.»
me: «Two Tom Collins please.»
From there it was just downhill. I’m not sure how Todd English’s name is attached to the food that was being served. The chicken was overly dry, the fish was overcooked, and the pastry thing was just outright gross. I used to work at an English restaurant and trust me, the food that was being brought out was not his caliber of cooking.
Also there was some shady stuff going on in the corner. Such as staff taking bribes for drinks. Seriously? What it comes down to is that the venue was not prepared for this event. It was understaffed and uninformed. And, because of the poor design, there was a huge bottleneck in the bar area. For my second drink, I waited almost 30 minutes and was served a half-​full cocktail.
I really do appreciate any event that is free, however this is my second time at Juliet for an event such as this. And this is the second time that there were huge lines and bartenders that had no clue what was going on. Like the bartender said, «I don’t know, I was just called into work, I don’t know what’s going on.» You would think management would give staff a brief overview of the event.
Sorry to vent, but I just had to throw it out there. While I love Unilocal events (!!), I just don’t love Juliet Supperclub.

Arrived to this place like a SUPASTAR !
Took the cab instead of taking the train since it was too far to walk.
Got there around 6:55 and the fellow Unilocalers were in line getting in!
Peter D. Taking attendance by the Entrance and trying to Remember MY NAME for the 50^th TIME!!! hahahhahaa. then he let me in.
Inside Décor is pretty impressive. Nice Artsy décor up in the ceilings, sparkly walls like DiscoBalls. One Small Bar and GAZZILLION Tables.
Saw Sean S. And Roderick A. Already with their drinks so I Rushed To get in line and get my Drink before it was Tooo Late.
I was pretty happy with my Drink (Long Tube looking glass to sip in called «french 75»)
They had a Variety of Hummus for Snacks and Also they were also waiters delivering some around the place (was able to Grab one with mushroom, chicken and GOAT Cheese that left an aftertaste in my MOUTH!).
Then Other peeps showed up and stayed in a LONG ASS LINE to get drinks (HAHAH! to Cassy S. and Yo Sub.)
Also Bumped in to my fellow Friend Hideki K. and Debbie.
Exciting thing I did this time i this event… GET TO TALK TO JANE FOR MORE THAN 10 MINUTES! HHAHAHAH! (Also took a pic!)
Also FInally got my Lunch Box! and Grabbed some Dk. Chocolates, YUM!
PS… They should have a List at the Bar for special drinks instead of asking the Bartender, They didn’t event know either!!!

** 5 stars for the Unilocal elite event, 4 stars for the mob scene at the bar**
I like that this place was so far West. I was like, am I going to Cali? The décor though reminded me of a strip club, and I was thinking where are the go-​go girls?
I can’t complain about free food and drinks. But I will lay the facts out. The Ghiradelli chocolates looked like condoms in the dimly lit room. But I like it was 72% cacao, it is good for your arteries. Thank you Unilocal for thinking about my health. The pita chips were good, but the hummus was a bit boring. But I am glad there was food to help soak up the booze. There were many cocktails available. I liked the Collins, margarita, and the Madras. There were no complimentary beers. A Blue Moon bottle cost $ 8 and a margarita $ 14. That really set me back.
I enjoyed watching the line dancing. The Electric Slide is cool. It was nice to see old friends (Ana S, Wendy C, Marie B, Jen O, Cassy S, Britton B, Andre L, James F, Jamel O and Peter K), and meet new ones (Lucy L, Jennifer R, Line B, Mike J).

Okay, so I shouldn’t be a jerk especially since it was my first NYC Unilocal Elite event. Except.
1. Long line and this is actually very excusable. Normally I wouldn’t mind this AT ALL. Except for what occurs thereafter.
2. Insanely packed. Small venue, a lot of people — all of which are scrambling to get snacks. This leads to…
3. No seating, no snacks (oh wait no, I did have one piece of cheese), and an insanely overprotected bar. Seriously the bar had a forcefield around it. That was amazing. Except for the part where my friend and I get nothing to snack on and no drinks.
4. We get a pin and a piece of chocolate. And a «OMG, Your first NYC Unilocal event!» I was actually very appreciative of this. I’m not being sarcastic. Her enthusiasm however made me realize how much FAIL this event was.
5. I thought you were supposed to mingle with other Unilocalers? Not like crowd up and protect the food and drinks against those who DARE BREECH THE SECURITY OF THE INNER SANCTITY THAT IS THE BAR.
The bright side? It was the long walk along the High Line. Otherwise, I’m sad over this however I still adore you Unilocal.Just maybe not your NYC events.

Oh yeah, thanks for revoking the Elite badge after this post. You all seemed clearly okay with accepting me just fine into the Elite but now my picture is a problem? That really makes everything so MUCH BETTER. Good job all round!
