History

Established in 2000.

Founded by Fountain House as a not-for profit space for artists living and working with mental illness to exhibit and sell their work, Fountain Gallery opened its first exhibition in June 2000. Gallery shows were initially presented in the front room overlooking Ninth Avenue; in 2005 the exhibition area was expanded to encompass the entire street level. Works by Fountain Gallery artists are included in 400 public and private collections and have been featured at numerous venues and special exhibits, notably the Outsider Art Fair. In 2009, with the generous support of Glenn Close, the Gallery established the Visiting Artists Program. In 2010, Fountain Gallery celebrated its10th Anniversary.

Meet the Manager

Ariel W.

Manager

Ariel Willmott graduated from SUNY Albany with an Art History degree. During the entirety of her four years at SUNY she worked at the University Art Museum where she was captivated by working with artists and the thrill of being a part of the formation of an exhibition from planning stages, to installation, and beyond. Growing up on Long Island she was raised by her mother, who lives with mental illness, who endlessly encouraged her self expression through art and writing. She continues to create work in collage and watercolor. Prior to working at Fountain Gallery, she was employed by Acoustiguide as the Operations Manager at The Museum of Modern Art, The Frick Collection and other NYC museums.
