Gastro Bar at 35th

Absolutely no reason to go to this place unfortunately. I can only speak for brunch but the staff was beyond rude and unprofessional that if they tolerate these people as their «staff» I see no reason to return and give it another try. I have worked in high end hospitality establishments for years so I’m generally tolerant. Food is mediocre and the ambiance is bizarre, as well as relatively overpriced for the what it was (very simple buffet comparable to a continental breakfast at 23/​per person) so many other options in the area don’t waste your time or money!

I stopped in Gastro Bar at 35^th with a friend during happy hour. It’s located in the lobby of the Tryp Hotel but it doesn’t feel too much like a hotel lobby. There’s plenty of seating to enjoy your drinks and meal. We sat at the bar and had the privilege of being served by Lindsay. Lindsay was super attentive and friendly. I decided to stick with wine but tasted a cocktail she made for my friend and it was delicious! I would suggest anyone in the area looking for a simple happy hour, to go to Gastro Bar. The drink prices are great ($ 5 house wine, $ 5 draft beers, $ 7 well drinks and daily cocktail specials) and Lindsay, the bartender was even better. Good drinks and good conversation — why not?

Fantastic: very high quality design, great ambiance, happy staff, very clean & sanitary, mezzanine is a nice nook, cool patrons (hotel is mostly monied cool young folk), and convenient location (3mins walk from 34^th St’s A/​C/​E northwest exit). Often you’ll find fashion-​related filming or folks here due to the Garment District out the doors. WiFi shared with hotel. Each counter seating area seats 4 – 6 with an individual tv. Nearly every table or booth has its own outlet which is utterly intelligent. TV’s are big, bright, and tuned individually. Normal Manhattan prices but you get high quality here. Overall, awesome.

A friend invited me to try the Gastro Bar. I sat at the bar and the bartender recommended a few drinks. I started with the sangria which was yummy. The menu is served tapas which I love because then I can try a few different small plates. The space was opening and inviting and although dining alone I was. Wry comfortable. I munched on the veggie flat bread pizza which was the best I have had and the beet salad which was loaded with golden beets. Luckily I was walking back to the hotel so I had one more yummy drink and the funnel cake sticks. The dessert needed 1 more minute to cook but it was so satisfying I didn’t care. I highly recommend a stop by the Gastro Bar in NYC.

Wonderful place to eat, transports you to Spain with the delightful dishes, the mac n cheese three ways the scallop and the shrimp with garlic are must haves, and is the Brussel sprouts with bacon, I had so muchto eat I can’t remember it all, then out came chahlah bread French toast drenched in honey for my birthday, the perfect ending to a wonderful meal

We ate breakfast here, it was a buffet. The food was phenomenal! Kids under 12 were ½ off. However a breakfast buffet for an adult is 19.99! Service was so so… Not great but not terrible either. Overall appearance of the place was great as well.

Stayed at the Tryp hotel and for the sake of convenience, we decided to grab breakfast here. Supposedly a buffet, the options were very limited and certainly not worth the $ 20 per person they charge. Eggs were cold and rubbery, the breads were slim pickings and not replenished. Beware the included gratuity. A very disappointing and overpriced mistake. Go elsewhere, even if you’re staying at the hotel.

This bar is very limited. Ordered two drinks and they were out of strawberry mix so neither drink could be made. Beer prices are 7.50 for draft. Kitchen closes at 10pm, bar closes at 11. Staff is ok, friendly. Staff were talking about some drama that was going on between coworkers while tending bar, luckily my girlfriend could understand it because it was in Spanish. Either way if your in a jam and cannot make it out of the hotel it is a decent place, otherwise there are other options literally one block away!

Ok to start I gotta say it is a WEIRD spot. It is inside of a hotel and the food options are all either weird or definitely frozen. We had the olives (which came out HOT like out of the microwave) we ordered the pesto chorizo flatbread which tasted like it was frozen and the hot almonds which I do have to say were very good. Service sucked and they had cappuccinos but not a latte which makes no sense. I’ll admit that my Manhattan was very good. Definitely never going back there and just a weird spot.

I want to chalk this up to a bad night, but there is absolutely no way this could be an isolated occurrence. This was singly the worst restaurant I have been to start to finish, from the absolutely clueless service, to the overpriced, stale, terrible cheese plate, to the employee sitting in a stairwell the last 20 minutes of her shift texting, these guys were off on every single cylinder possible.
Looking for a quick bite and some shelter from the rain, we caught this place on Unilocal after seeing they were close. We walk in and find ourselves a seat. There is a couple sitting at the bar, but otherwise the place is pretty empty (about 7pm). After a while, we go to the bar to ask for menu–
Bartender:“You have to be seated”, Me: «Oh, sorry, I hadn’t seen a sign or host or anything»
Bartender: (goes and pulls out sign from closet and walks away).
Me– «So can we be seated?»
Bartender: «Oh. Yea I guess so».
Some poor kid eventually comes over as our waiter– and the comedy routine ensues…
«Sangria? I– I don’t know what that is??? (Response to my wife, even though it is clearly on the menu, and even written in chalk on the board above our heads in huge letters)»
«I guess I’m not interested in what you wanted for drinks, moreso food»
«Oh you probably wanted plates (well after our food came out)»
«So the only thing we have on draft anymore is Guinness… We had a crazy New Year’s Eve (it is January 3– there are at least 5 beers listed on tap in the menu)»
Then came our check. I noticed the Guinness pint had been listed on the check as $ 8.27 (no tax or anything like that). The menu had clearly stated $ 7.50. Ordinarily I wouldn’t care, but this was getting ridiculous, so we walked it up to the bar only to be met with stares.
Bartender: «Oh yeah, the menu is wrong… (more stares) I guess I’ll print you a new ticket»…
The moral of the story is, just don’t. There are too many good places to eat in this city, and this is not one of them.

This is in the lobby of a hotel with no separation. There were suitcases and people running around, checking in, checking out. You’re eating next to someone from middle America trying to strike up a conversation while they wait for hotel keys.

Met some friends here for happy hour. The drink deal was fine — $ 5 for a glass of wine or a beer. The food was very well presented, but a bit pricey. I had a great time because I was catching up with some old college friends that I hadn’t seen in a while, but the ambiance was kind of weird since it’s in a hotel lobby. I might come here again if someone is on their way out from Penn Station, but otherwise, I don’t think I’d have much of a reason to go back.

This bar is located in the lobby of Tryp by Wyndham Times Square Hotel. It has potential to be a great place for drinks and food, especially for hotel guests, but everything was just alright. I know it’s NYC and a hotel bar, but the tapas are overpriced for the quality of the food. They averaged about $ 12.
The fish tacos were disappointing. It came in three tacos. The fish was so small, nowhere to be found and half of it was breading. The Mac and Cheese 3 Way was probably the most worth it. You get three dishes of different types of mac and cheese. The Gambas Al Ajillo were actually really tasty and my group liked it. It’s shrimp baked in a ceramic dish and comes with bread for dipping the sauce.
Service was slow even though there weren’t a lot of people. I think our server forgot to put in the order for the Gambas because it came out way later than everything else. If I stay at the Tryp again, I wouldn’t eat here. Take your money and get a bowl of ramen instead!

***Tourist Trap***
I bought a
certificate and came in for light dinner on a Sunday night and it was total fail for me.
I ordered the following:
Chicken Lollipops
Beef Sliders
Mac And Cheese 3 Ways
Gambas Al Ajillo
Chorizo And Cheese Flatbread
Everything except the beef sliders was either VERY salty or tasteless. The drinks were nothing special either.
The décor/​furniture is cute but it is super bright in there. It was like eating at a fancy cafeteria.

I really want to give this place a better rating, but I’m afraid I can’t. We came after getting a promo off of a deal site. The menu looks appetizing, and the cocktail list isn’t too bad. The fact that it is in the lobby of the TRYP hotel doesn’t make it bad, nor does the idea that it is tapas or the price. In fact, the ambience was pretty cool, and the night we went they had a live band playing music to fit the mood — not too loud, but just right. We sat at the bar and the bartender was pretty cool, too.
The reason I yet still give 2 stars here, is that the food nor the drinks really live up to their expectations. The tapas we ordered, which included the beef sliders, the mac and cheese 3way, the fish tacos, and the chorizo flatbread looked amazing on the menu, but just weren’t that amazing in reality. We also got sangria, which you can get better sangria elsewhere. Maybe the food used to be better, but it definitely could use a little love. If you are here checking it out, and decide get one tapas, stick with the mac and cheese 3way — 2 of the 3 are really very tasty.

Went to Gastro Bar with a couple of co workers on a Monday. Thought the décor was more daytime-​hotel then an after hours hangout, and the crowd matched. The tapas menu was varied but small, ordered the croquettes with manchego and mac&cheese 3 ways. Both satisfied my cheese quota for the week, but were utterly perfect for comfort food. The fish tacos were tasty and balanced, and you could tell the ingredients were fresh. Overall good atmosphere and almost an upscale diner-​like feel in the booths and back tables.

This place is great for bar /​hotel food. The mac and cheese was some of the best I’ve had, only surpassed by Kuma’s in Chicago. We also had the sliders, which were also yummmmy! Definitely a great option if you are staying in the hotel. Check it!

Went to The Gastro Bar at 35 this past Sunday with my daughters to celebrate my birthday. My daughter had a
gift certificate and we honestly didn’t know what to expect from their reviews and the reviews here on Unilocal!Well… what a pleasant surprise! This truly is one of the best kept secrets in NYC. I admit the set-​up is a bit strange since you are right off the lobby with no wall/​separation, but the bar is cool and the décor is hip. Our waiter was very nice and helpful explaing the dishes and offering suggestions. We tried a few of their specialty drinks which were nice and different from your run of the mill cocktails. We LOVE tapas and since most of theirs come with 3 items per serving it was perfect for the 3 of us to try a little of everything. The fish tacos = devine. The mac & chees = delicious (the girls loved the NY Style). The roasted beets was my favorite — a delicious frisée salad with beets & almonds = perfect! We also tried the flatbread, sliders and croquetas — all very good. But the pièce de résistance was the Torrija for dessert!!!
Will definitely return!

Some of the reviews here are pretty harsh — as long as you know what you’re getting into, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this place.
First off, this is a Tapas restaurant. In NYC.
Tapas = small plates, NYC = expensive. You do the math. (PS, this is not a fair or acceptable justification, but a sad truism of the area).
Second, this place is situated in the lobby of a hotel. Truth be told, it is less like a hotel restaurant and more like a hotel café. In other words, you won’t necessarily come here for the romantic ambiance. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
That said, the food was surprisingly tasty. The fish tacos were flavorful and well prepared with avocado, red onion and a hint of tangy spice. The mini burgers were a touch overcooked, but at least they had good spices and were well-​prepared with toppings. The shrimp dish was most notable — well-​cooked and well-​flavored, baked in a dish coated with olive oil. Plus, we got 6 in the order (I was expecting a disappointing 4).
All told, this place is a solid 3 star restaurant. It is definitely overpriced, but at least the food was pretty solid. I’m not necessarily gunning to go back anytime soon, but I haven’t crossed it off my list, and I don’t regret going. Though in all honesty, my opinion might have been different without the help of a
coupon.
