Specialties

Stories of murder and mayhem spice up our ghost tours. Our lantern-​led, 2-​hour long, all-​outdoor walks have between 13 and 18 stops. Historical photographs bring the people and places to life. Our stories don’t skim the surface. We delve into the history behind the events and through deep research correct some of the mistakes told in the past. At tours end you receive a list of our sources for your own sleuthing. We leave the cheese and costumes to the other tours and suggest you leave your little ones with a sitter as the subject matter may be too graphic for those under the age of 10. Each neighborhood has it’s own flavor based on its evolution. Lower Manhattan features tales of the oldest ghosts and violent historic mayhem. Greenwich Village provides a charming, historic backdrop for murders and tragic hauntings, and the Hell’s Kitchen-​Tenderloin tour follows gangsters, serial killers, and phantoms of the theater district.

Established in 2010.

We began with a tour of Lower Manhattan, rich with history and full of mayhem, murders, and ghosts. Next we launched the prettiest neighborhood of Greenwich Village, and finally our most violent tour of Hell’s Kitchen.

I started Ghosts, Murders, and Mayhem Walking Tours in August of 2010 after earning my New York City Sightseeing Guide License. Originally I was going to offer a ghost tour, but after studying New York history, I discovered so many strange and important stories of mayhem, I decided to broaden our subject matter.

The reputable publisher of historical books, Arcadia Publishing, reached out to me to contribute a book to their Images of America Series. «Ghosts and Murders of Manhattan» is available through Arcadia, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and an autographed copy from us directly for $ 20 (includes shipping).

Although I’ve had some paranormal experiences in my life, the scariest time for me happened after I left my corporate dream job as a Director of Training and moved at age 39 Into the dorms with 18 year-​olds at the Boston Conservatory. Three years later I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.F.A. in Musical Theater Performance. I continue to perform and enjoy writing.

This was a really fun way to spend a couple hours, getting to see some beautiful lower Manhattan architecture and learning some unusual history.
Our tour guide Meghan was great and very animated. I don’t know how she was able to memorize such detailed stories, but she relayed them with a really expressive (but not over the top) storyteller voice. She did speak a bit fast which made some of the tour feel rushed… not sure if that’s because the tour had a hard stop time.
There were about 10 or so stories and sites that we stopped at… an interesting mix of some creepy history, cool trivia-​like anecdotes, and corny stuff. Corny stuff is to be expected on a tour. Being Halloween evening the group was really large, which took away a little from the ambiance, but Meghan did a good job of shuttling us along and making sure everyone could see and hear.
Overall, I would take another tour – probably on a off-​peak night and with a promo code. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes, as there definitely was a lot of that.

Loved this tour! My friend Heidi surprised me with this tour. Our guide Meghan was awesome. She so energetic and passionate about her stories and findings. Tour took us through the beautiful Greenwich village. Tour is two hours with slot of walking but really goes by fast! Would definitely recommend this tour with Meghan!

I had a great night last night with Prudence as our guide of the torrid affairs of Edgar Allen Poe. She was so much fun as a storyteller and with her witches outfit. She introduced herself to us as «Edgar Allen Poe’s mother in law» what fun on a Friday night a week before Halloween. I would highly recommend her as your guide as she made the experience fun and interesting!

I had a wonderful time on our tour. Katherine led us through Greenwich Village with stories and vivid history. She is a fantastic story teller and kept the interest of everyone in the group. She gave an especially moving and respectful description of the Triangle Factory fire tragedy. I’ve been, perhaps morbidly, obsessed with that event since I was a kid, and she did a great job really getting us to comprehend what that moment was like for those poor souls. Great job!
I loved it, I can’t wait to do the other neighborhoods, and I would recommend this to anyone. Great way to see neighborhoods and learn some history. I’ve been in NYC for over twenty years, there’s always something more to learn about this cool, cool city!

I really loved this tour! Our guide had so much cool history on super creepy real murders and terrible things that happened in Hells Kitchen. Super gross and awful but super interesting! I loved it. I can’t wait to do all of the other tours! I highly recommend. I wasn’t bored for a second, and the time flew by. I didn’t want it to end! Plus some parts of the city I had never noticed or seen before were pointed out to me — very cool since I’ve been living in NYC over 12 years!

I went on 2 tours, Lower Manhattan and Greenwich Village. I had a great time on both of them. The tour guides were great. Both tours were rich on history and creepy information. It’s a great way to learn things about NYC you never knew before. It’s a fun night out with friends. Wear sneakers or other comfortable shoes, you will be walking for over 2 hours.

We took the Lower Manhattan Tour over the weekend. It was very chilly, so I was glad that I was wearing layers. We covered a lot of ground in just under two hours… it actually felt a bit rushed and I expected it to go a little longer.
However, Megan was great. She was a real trooper doing the tour in that cold while getting over being sick. It was a very interesting tour and showed quite a bit of history.
The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it really didn’t hit the mark for me as far as a themed tour and I really wanted to know more about hauntings, paranormal findings & gruesome details about happenings in the area and compared to other tours I’ve taken around the world this felt very «G» rated and not really as intense as I had hoped. My husband loved it though because he loves history.
I would recommend it, however if you are really into ghosts & paranormal like I am this may not have as much information as you would like.

I just got back from my walking tour a little while ago and I HAD to say something. As I New Yorker, I am constantly fascinated with history and architecture. And our guide was nothing short of amazing.
I highly recommend Meghan as a guide. She was beyond charming and wove the tales and NYC history with quirk, with dignity, and of course with a little drama thrown in. It was a enjoyable way to learn even more about the city and a great way to spend an evening with friends. A million thumbs up!

If you love NYC, finding new places, and learning a bit about the gritty foundations of The City, you should definitely sign up for a tour with Ghosts, Murder and Mayhem.
Elise, the founder and occasional guide, has put hundreds of hours of research into this adventure. From gang wars, and «Indian» attacks, to hauntings and apparitions, you’ll hear stories of centuries past and present. Wear your comfy shoes, because over 2 – 2.5 hours you will cover a lot of ground.
I’ve done the Hell’s Kitchen walk as well as the Lower Manhattan one. Both were well attended by a fun group of ghost and history enthusiasts and absolutely taught me about the more treacherous backstory of NY.
At $ 25 per ticket (though check the site for discount codes or livingsocial offers) this tour is a steal.

Fantastic tour, so much fun! I did the Lower Manhattan tour with a friend who is also into spooky stuff and we both really enjoyed it. I used to work in LM, and it was fun to learn new things about familiar places. I didn’t feel like the walking was too much at all, there were plenty of stops to sit down if you needed to. You cover a lot of ground but it doesn’t feel like it. The stories were all really interesting and a few were actually quite chilling. The tour guide, Meghan, was fantastic. She has a fun personality and definitely knows her stuff. I’m looking forward to going on the other tours when it gets warmer! If you like creepy things and history, you will definitely like this.

Great, historically accurate stories! Our guide, Meghan, was a very engaging storyteller and really knew her history. Loved hearing all the stories about places that people walk by every day but never consider. Also, got the tour at a great deal price by using a living social deal — normally $ 25 regular price — got it for 50% off.

I would definitely recommend this tour. I went on the Greenwich Village one and Meghan was a great tour guide and she definitely knew her spooky facts. She was very bubbly and made it exciting. I would say the only thing that could have made it better would be to walk a little less and hear more stories. It’s not the guide’s fault since she has to take us to the actual locations that relate to the stories she’s telling, but it did make it seem a little long, especially waiting for traffic lights to turn green. I would want to try the other ones for sure.

I didnt feel like this tour was exciting at all. Yeah, you got to hear stories about murders and ghosts and all but that was about it. It was a 2 ½ hr tour and your feet end up hurting after walking for so long. The area was crowded and we could barely hear the tour guide at some stops. We would stop every 2 – 5 min at a location and all we did was sit/​stand and have the tour guide talk about what happened at a location across the street or several feet away. The stories werent scary or even that interesting.

I was able to go on two tours in one weekend, and they were both terrific! There are so many ghostly, murderous sites in New York, and Meghan brought each story to life. We never got tired, since she gave us many opportunities to rest, and she kept us fascinated and amused with her stories. I learned more about New York in two hours than I did in several years! I highly recommend this tour — It is a great way to see the real New York, and learn about its history!

Matt Black was our tour guide for the lower Manhattan ghost tour and he was great! Very enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable, we had a wonderful time. I would suggest comfortable shoes and a warm jacket for the cold.

Really enjoyed the lower manhattan tour. Our tour guide was really great and I loved hearing about the city’s sinister history. The walk is about 2.5 hrs but there are opportunities to sit if your feet grow tired.

Our tour took us all around Greenwich Village. There were some locations I knew of, and some I did not. I did appreciate our tour guide, Megan’s bubbly personality and enthusiasm for the history of this area and we learned a ton from her. Though I hang out here a lot, I never took notice of the little things. the beautiful stained glass windows adorning the houses on W10th, the warm, buttery smells wafting out of Waverly Inn, or what (or should I say. who? *cue scary orchestra music*) lies beneath Washington Square Park.
I’m a big pansy so I was glad this tour wasn’t too creepy but some may not find this exciting enough. This IS, however a good way to explore the rich, spooky history of the Village.
