Very cute Japanese curry place! Clean and friendly. I order yakuzen curry with chicken and vegetables with super spicy. It is quite spicy. I would not recommend it to everyone. The soup tastes pretty good from fish stock. It is quite a big meal with brown rice option. It is very hearty food for cold weather:)

THEWORSTPLACEEVER! Even one star is too much for this restaurant. So the food is just below the average. The service is WORST here, but the nightmare part is the cheating on customers. Slow food service. It took more than 50 mins to get this small plate of curry. Second, they even charged the food that we never have ordered. We also found out that they overcharged an appetizer on the receipt, which we could have just passed by. (The price on the receipt was not same as the one from the menu. I believe some customers have just passed their cheating.) The worse thing is that they NEVER apologized. They just IGNORED it. Simply to say, the restaurant was a thief. DONOT go there unless you want to pay more than you ate with this disgusting service and food.

Great japananese curry spot. The meal really feels home made. Had the curry chicken with vegetables over rice. Had great flavor and was satisfying. The presentation was spot on as well. On a tray with japanese style eating ware. Service was good and they explained items on the menu and recommended this dish as for what my tastes were like. Fast and quick. I’ll be back.

I got plain curry with pork and potatoes. The curry sauce was delicious, but no joke I got one piece of pork. Like an inch and a half long and nothing else. They should have just put one piece of pork and potatoes in the menu, then I wouldn’t have been expecting more than a piece. I like it, but with the portion they gave me, most probably will not be back.

I love curry. All kinds of curry, Indian, Thai, Japanese, etc. I have been wanting to try this place for a while since I pass by it all the time. It was really disappointing though. First, they were out of the chicken legs so we couldn’t even order the one thing on the menu that we took interest in. Then the curry was not flavorful. Salty, but not flavorful like curry is suppose to be. It tasted bad. The rice probably have been sitting on the pot for way too long(probably due to the fact that their turn-over rate is slow). The rice were all dried and hard. Both white rice and brown rice had that issue. I think we can step into any Japanese restaurant by St. Marks that serves curry and their curry would be a lot better than this. For nearly $ 20 per dish, this is way over-priced. Service was slow. I should have known by the lack of the customers they have that they were not very good especially when they have such a nice location, right at the corner where a lot of people passes by.

I’ve got to say this little place makes phenomenal soup. The flavor profile kicked my ass that’s how good it was. I also had a lil cold and instantly felt better. Very good find and this will be a new habit of mine

High quality ingredients. Great if you’re a foodie looking for traditional/authentic food. Very nice people.

Yakuzen vegetable curry is a work of art. The vegetables come grilled in handsome sizes which allows the vegetable to retain its shape and flavor, not melt in the broth. You can get your veggie fix — eggplant, lotus root, okra, zucchini, carrot, and potatoes! The fact that you can choose from a scale on the spice factor depending on your preference(tolerance), is an added bonus. The soup is surprisingly light but has a nice depth. I think it’s nice enough to make you warm, stops shy of a kick so you’re not sore. Perfect for cold weather. Restaurant is clean, service prompt and friendly.

This place’s service is SOSLOW it’s almost fascinating how that’s possible, it’s not like they forgot the order, but it’s almost like they’re growing edamame and hatching eggs in the kitchen or something. The soup curry is pretty delicious, it comes in different serving sizes, portions are reasonable. Natto curry is a bit strange, not sure if I’d recommend or get that again. Japanese red pickles were good. Also, if you were to order a warm sake, make sure you order it RIGHTAWAY as it takes an eternity for them to heat it up. PS, if you like your spicy, go with at least 4 on the«heat level».

A bit expensive for what you get. Curry tends to be Indian style; too salty and strong taste.

I really loved the healthy soup curry. The«premium«was pretty good but not fantastic. Desserts were really good I had the black sesame cheesecake. It was more like pudding but still tasty. Music was great.

Good curry. But a bit over priced. Love the fork and knives!

This is pretty good Japanese curry, but nothing amazing. Given that this is a curry place, I expected more. An instant curry made from those cubes would be almost as good, and the curry soup I didn’t find to be particularly good. It had a dark, smoky sort of flavor that, while deep, was not actually so enjoyable. We had the black sesame cheesecake for dessert and it tasted only very faintly of black sesame. That plus the fact that the cake was way way too hard and dense and not soft and moist left the cake tasting only faintly of peanut butter. Overall, no reason to come here. Make your own Japanese curry or seek it elsewhere.

Yummy and tasty curry! Just the right amount of spicy and depth of flavor! It will warm you from the inside out! It is great for a cool city night. I will definitely come again. It hits all the right taste buds:)

I’ve been a fan of Cocoron since I first went last year– now I find that the same people who gave you Cocoron’s delicious soba are now trying their hand at curry. Goemon is located RIGHTNEXTTO Cocoron– it has a similar sort of vibe(wood furniture, kinda rustic) but here break away from the soba and have curry rice and curry soup dishes.(Also check out the ridiculous mascot– a creepy/cute bunny wearing a turban!) It’s a very narrow space with a lot of counter seats, very casual and quick. Boyfriend got the Carrot/Potato Plain curry at level 4 spiciness(you can choose the level of spice– perfect for those who can’t handle the heat… aka me!) Level 4 is midlevel but it still packs a strong punch. He loved it and really liked the fact that he could choose the spicy level. He also got an extra side of rakkyo(you can get extra toppings as well!) I got the special taco rice– a Japanese take on an American dish thats an American take of a Mexican dish! Quite the history on this dish and its an Okinawa favorite! It is rice topped with a layer of curry/taco flavored ground meat, topped with shredded lettuce, avocado, tomato salsa and chese that had been melted with a blowtorch. The melted cheese had a great smokey sort of flavor that tied the dish together. Very good and satisfying, but I will say it was a bit too heavy on the rice. Gimme some more meat and veggies please! We finished off with a dessert of Black Sesame Cheesecake. A little steep for $ 6 but well worth it– great texture and creamy! And the black sesame flavor was spot on, without being overwhelming. I think they have a lot of potential! I’d live to try the curry soups next time.

Looking at some of the negative reviews here, I felt compelled to write a review. First of all, it’s not the cheapest curry(like go-go curry) and it on par with the more expensive spots(curry-ya). However since its 1 block from chinatown where you walk over and a huge meal for $ 5, I understand the gripes. I got the large yakuzen chicken soup curry for $ 18 and it’s a pretty significant portion. As someone who makes curry from scratch, the quality here is actually very good. It’s indian inspired so heavy on the tumeric /cumin and not your typical curry. If you come here expecting go-go curry, go elsewhere(go-go curry is kinda crappy tho to be honest). It’s not for everyone but if you’ve had indian food in london, you will appreciate this. It’s lighter and fresher than most spots on st marks and significantly better quality. I also got cold green tea, that was the most green matcha infused tea — also very good. Have recommended to my friends and will definitely come back.

meh. I love Japanese curry, but not sure this is the best place for it. All the curries are on the sweeter side(not my cup of tea…), and some are indian-inspired. Service was by far the worst part of it all. I went at 1pm on a Saturday and it was completely EMPTY(stark contrast between its sister restaurant, cocoron). The waitress that served us couldn’t really explain any questions we had about items on the menu and was just really blah about everything. Also, super pricey for plain ‘olé curry. Mine was $ 12 for the plain curry with potatoes and carrots — $ 2 more for just cheddar cheese –_-«. Don’t get it. Hopefully they’ll get on cocoron’s level some day!!! In the meantime — go to Go Go Curry for some cheap delicious curry, or Curry-ya!

I came here with two other friends around 9PM on a saturday. Our original spot was to go to Cocoron next door. But when we went there, we couldn’t open the door. The waiter looked at us and smiled and continued with what they were doing. Clearly they were still open, but it didn’t make sense at all to not tell us whether or not they were closed for the night when eye contact was made. We had no choice but to just go next door, as it was getting late already to try to find another dinner spot. When we entered, there wasn’t a lot of space. Luckily enough, we were able to share a table with a couple in one of the larger tables. Not knowing what was actually good in this restaurant, we simply chose an entrée that had a picture with it. We had the vegetable curry, and also the chicken with the curry soup. Chose 2 for the level of spiciness. The food came out pretty quickly. There are a lot of vegetables in the food, and they all go so well with the curry itself. It was simply tasty. I love cute things, so I stared at their utensils for the longest time. Had to take a picture. All in the all, it was good. Not a good place to come to with a big group. Seating isn’t exactly the best, but if you want a good curry dish, this is a good place. Service was also top notch. The waitress had a smile on her face the whole time.

Laid-back spot with shared picnic tables and flavor-packed curry. There was one girl at front of house and she was very efficient. While passing us our menus she praised the new Yakuzen curry as their specialty. Google reveals that Yakuzen means«Medicinal Eating», and it’s based off Chinese medicinal theory. Every ingredient’s function and natural health benefits are thoughtfully considered, with many spices and often traditional medicine blended in. It is meant to be a delicious but nutritious healthy diet(I would take this over Paleo any day!) We ordered the Pork and Vegetable soup curry with a «Very Hot»(4) spice rating(They have 8 levels for you to choose from — I’ll have to try«Extra Flammy»(+$ 2) next time). The broth was absolutely delicious and a perfect spice comfort level from a girl that orders Drunken Noodles once a week, without fail. There was zucchini, eggplant, bamboo shoot, potatoes, a huge glorious carrot, and a divinely soft boiled egg. Every vegetable was fresh and satisfying. The pork was also generously portioned and supremely grilled. I couldn’t help but wish it was paired with noodles, but rice was great too! Our other dish, the Vegetable Natto Curry was a totally different flavor and more reminiscent of Indian curry. My boyfriend enjoyed it but I personally felt it was too sweet. I will have to come back to try the Classic Curry and see if it can outshine Go Go Curry’s. We also shared a mango lassi which was a refreshing, tangy, not-too-sweet accompaniment to all the spices.
