The food is pretty decent and the place is spacious(although just a little too dim), but the service is noticeably slow, though the lone waiter is quite nice. …And then there’s the owner/lady, with the crazy hair, who occasionally roams around the restaurant when she’s not taking takeout phone orders, or answering her cell phone set on max ringtone. The happy hour seems pretty popular … for people who like D&G(and I’m talking about Dungeons & Dragons, not Dolce & Gabbana). If you’ve got a load of time to kill, and it’s convenient, maybe consider this place.

Literally sitting here right now waiting on the slowest service ever. Food is ok, portions are very small for your standard sushi joint. No reason what so ever to go out of your way to get here. Maybe if you lived in the block and there was 4 feet of snow keeping you from going anywhere else. Maybe then you should try it.

Sometimes you don’t realize you have expectations until they’re not met. I don’t expect to come into a japanese restaurant and be met by a guy who looks straight off a Sopranos casting call. He was really nice and very hospitable. But somehow, hearing«Yo, you want tempura flakes wit dat?» transforms the experience. They didn’t have hot sake on their happy hour drink list, and their options for happy hour rolls were very limited. Nothing was terrible, but next time I want mafia with my sushi, I’ll go into Jersey.

Weird place. I stumbled upon Hamachi after realizing Mizu was closed. It’s in a dark, semi-dingy space. When I walked in, it smelled of cleaning supplies and cigarette spoke. Blech. Lunch specials are decent… I ordered safe based on my first impression and had two rolls(california and spicy tuna) and a salad. Not bad, not great. It rang in at $ 10 which isn’t much of a deal, especially since the sushi rolls are six pieces each vs eight. I much prefer Momoya over on 7th Ave… It’s definitely worth the walk for the quality as well as the ambiance. It seems Hamachi’s draw is their happy hour and that’s likely the only time I’d return for another go at it.

That was seriously the worst food I have ever had… from the soup to the tea… I would not revisit.

Happy Hour Specials really make me happy. Sapporo drafts and domestic beers were $ 4−5/pint, and the sushi rolls were dirt cheap, but at the same time dirt small. They also have the other staple japanese dishes — donburi, udon, etc. that were on par with what I’ve had before Nevertheless, I must say, when you’re drinkin and eating cheapish meals, it’s really easy to forget how much you’ve ordered. lol. I do remember getting their famous tuna pizza voted for best runner up asian fusion dish of NY. Tasty, but a bit mushy. Kinda like taking sushi/sashimi and simply dumping it on pizza bread in my opinion. Nevertheless, a nice happy hour place to watch a game and get some happy hour specials.

Save your money! Mediocre food, awful service, for the same money we could have gone around the corner to Sushi Samba and had a good meal. Definitely not on our list to return… dreadful!

I went here for happy hour yesterday, and they have some great deals! The sushi rolls are $ 4, and the drinks are also $ 3-$ 4. the food was very delicious! great place to fill up on food+drinks before going elsewhere for a super expensive dinner on a thursday/friday night.

Another Faux Japanese. Fish for the sushi was tasteless and almost seemed that sugar water was added to preserve it. Cold owners, unhospitable and not Japanese. Wait staff was warm. Oh yeah-over priced

Aside from really liking all the red they had going on there wasn’t much keeping me excited while eating here. I ate the beef udon and beef fried gyoza: lets break it down Beef gyoza: good, not great… tasty but i could tell they were frozen before fry, looks like they made them there but as pointed out seems like they bought the dough, dumplings freeze well so it didn’t taste bad. Beef Udon: Beef broth was my favorite part, tasty had a hint of miso which i love. Udon was chewy, and the beef was top round, not my favorite choice for soups like this, its tends to get tough and if not seasoned even in a broth doesn’t taste that good, again only my opinion and personal preference. I would have used brisket, only because price wise makes sense i know they don’t want to use a pricey meat for a cheap dish. Although right now brisket prices are raising mainly because every seems to be opening a burger place now and meat prices are crazy, with that being said watch out while you shop.

Like any other sushi restaurant, I feel. I ordered the King California Roll(~$ 9) and a regular salad(~$ 3)– pretty sure the roll contained strange crunchy bits, and my salad was very depressing. Not sure why they skimped on what was already very bland dressing. I had tempura ice cream here as well(for the first time ever– amazing, I know). It was good, but then again, fried foods usually are! The interior is super dark, with a bar in the front and tables near the rear of the restaurant. Service is friendly enough. Overall, rather forgettable but a fine place to grab food if you’re hungry and in the area.

When we first came to this restaurant, we loved the dark setting because I’ve always admired a restaurant where the setting is one of a more mellow, laid back and intimate one as opposed to any other description. It’s located by my college so that made coming here even more relevant because if it turned out to be a good location, we would be repeated visitors. On our first visit on June 1, 2008, I can still remember how polite and inviting the waiter appeared. The conversation all three of us held throughout the dining experience heightened our perception of the restaurant. apart from the nice waiter for the evening, the restaurant is spacious enough to feel separate from other patrons; it’s clean as well. I ordered one of my favorite options when visiting a Japanese restaurant. It has been roughly 7+ months since I’ve had any sushi or rolls of any kind, but I still have my favorites. Nonetheless, in 2008 during my first encounter. I ordered Chicken Teriyaki as well as Sweet Potato Roll(w/Brown Rice) as well as Avocado Roll(W/Brown Rice). My girlfriend ordered Chicken Teriyaki. I actually enjoyed the Chicken Teriyaki because it wasn’t expensive and it also wasn’t drowning in sauce as most restaurants do. I usually spend $ 15 – 23 for Chicken Teriyaki elsewhere, but it was only about $ 14 here. This was my first attempt at eating rolls with brown rice and I must say it was heavenly scrumptious. The sweet potato roll was perfect. I’m a sucker for these two rolls so messing them up would be a big no-no. They got it right on the money this evening. My girlfriend enjoyed her Teriyaki as well. Would I recommend this location to someone? Definitely, even though on my second attempt I decided the experience wasn’t as great or nearly as good as the first attempt. I didn’t try their sushi, so I couldn’t tell you about their freshness. I always lean towards vegetable rolls when I visit Japanese restaurants but my girlfriend likes their sushi pieces… well the salmon she has ordered. I guess depending on your waiter, the evening can be a hit or miss. Give it a try if you’re in the area.

Well, strictly speaking, the sushi rolls weren’t that bad. I mean, presentation was fair and the fish was fresh. The problem was the dismissive, but not rude service. Our waiter got off duty during the meal and just disappeared. A bit disorganized. I’d rather just get take out than go back. Wont bother again.

I give this place a solid OK. Clean, cozy, wood-paneled space, not too crowded when I went on a holiday weekend. The host was friendly and quite thoughtful in setting up a table for our party of 5 — asked if we wanted the 5th chair pulled up at the end of our table rather than sitting across from an empty space — didn’t want the 5th guest to «feel alienated», he explained. I liked that. Our server, on the other hand, was kind of a space cadet, and our food arrived at pretty different times. But the sushi was fresh, prices reasonable, water frequently refilled. A pleasant, stress-free dinner all in all.

Was looking for a place near my friend’s apt and came across Hamachi on Unilocal.Saw it got decent reviews, so we decided to check it out. The place is pretty spacious inside and it’s definitely good for groups. The food is pretty good too! I got the sashimi bento box and the sashimi was very fresh. The bento box came with more filler stuff than most places, so I wasn’t too happy about that(i.e. they gave me a random pile of lettuce instead of white rice). My friends seemed pretty happy with their food. One friend got the whatever roll, which she said was pretty good. Service is quick and prices are reasonable. I’d go back again.

Terrible! Met up with some girls here for an intimate dinner last night based on the Unilocal reviews(sorry Unilocaler’s, I beg to differ on this one). I have been craving for sushi and was looking forward to inhaling some fresh, cold and delicious sashimi but… what we got was lukewarm and fishy smelling sashimi instead which really grossed us out! The server was totally inattentive and seemed somewhat clueless about the items on the menu. My friend had asked for green tea a couple of times which she ended up NOT getting. After we finished our food, we sat there with the plates without anyone bothering to come over to clear our table for us! WTH?! We had to flag him over to tell him we’re finished before he finally took some plates away. Strangely enough, he only took some and never came back for the rest and so, we flagged down another guy to ask if he could take the other dishes away! The whole place has a neighborhood feel to it which is great for intimate get togethers but the lack of service and lack of quality won’t make it my «go to» place!

I really like Hamachi. The sushi is very consistent and reasonably priced. My favorite thing about Hamachi is the free desert they give you(fried bananas with a bit of chocolate sauce on top) with every order. Once I ordered one roll for pickup and there was no dessert … but usually with bigger orders it is a guarantee.

A hidden nest located on 20th between Park Ave S & Broadway, this low key Japanese Restaurant serves elegant quality sushi at a modest price. The strength of this restaurant lies within their various sushi entrees. Stick with the basis Sushi Regular combination where you will experience the various delights of what true Salmon, Tuna, and Yellow Tail have to offer. Accompanied with a free salad(with sushi entrees) and a dessert, this is a guarantee diamond in the rough located within the Flatiron District!

can a medium range place get 5 stars? this one does, for exceeding expectations and for not being bad at anything. how does that work, exactly? well, for starters, it was open and a stone’s throw from mizu, which is where we had planned to go after hours of careful Unilocal research. but mizu was closed — on a sunday night! what kind of place is closed on a sunday night? — hamachi was right across the street, and was open. STAR. lots of seating. there were all of three other diners, using all of two tables. the place was empty at 7pm. maybe only one waiter, but it didn’t matter. we got lots of waiter attention. and nobody rushed us, we were able to just sit and talk for 15 minutes without even ordering a drink. they didn’t mind. STAR they had a green tea martini. it tasted nothing like green tea, what with the lemon and triple sec and lime juice and whatever else there was, which completely masked the green tea infused vodka, but it tasted great as it was, so who really cares? the waiter very kindly offered to add more vodka to enhance the green tea flavor, but it wasn’t necessary. it wasn’t what it set out to be but it still came up smelling like a rose, which was sort of how the whole evening was going. STAR we ordered sushi, the huge platter for two. we were allowed substitutions. i’ll say it again: we were allowed substitutions. delete california roll, add spicy tuna roll, and a very hot spicy one too. what sushi place ever allows substitutions? none that i’ve ever seen. but here at hamachi it was ok. STAR the sushi itself was very very good fish and rice. fresh, big but not too big, but maybe not too adventurous. although they had clam and octopus and eel and urchin on the menu, they were not part of the platter. it was a very safe platter: 2 each of yellowtail, tuna, salmon, fluke, bass, spanish mackeral, and shrimp tempura, tuna and spicy tuna rolls. for the midlevel place that it is, it was top quality. not nobu, but not bento-matic supermarket either. as good as the best takeout places around, maybe better. STAR free desert without even asking: two little tiny scoops of green tea ice cream and two bite-sized pieces of fried banana. STAR is that five? oh. six? i must be getting soft. ok, let’s take one star away because the music was bad and too loud. but really, we asked them to turn it down and play something else and they did, with an apology and a smile. STAR err, i think that makes seven. crap.

I’d been looking for a good(fresh, inexpensive, unpretentious) neighborhood sushi place since moving to my new place in August… I’ve finally found it! This is a hidden gem type of a place. Not at all fancy, in fact while we were there on Saturday a group of obnoxiously snobby kids traipsed in with their popped collars and Prada bags, took one quick glance around and quickly turned on their collective heels and left. Fine by me… All the standards, plus lots of creative rolls. Service isn’t stellar, but that’s what happens when you give one server 10 tables. Cute little free dessert of fried banana and green tea ice cream at the end of your meal. We will certainly be back.
