I’ve been coming here for more than ten years and each time leave a very satisfied customer. Actually, I’ve never had a single bad experience — wonderful staff and Mina is a true talent. As long as I live in NYC, this is where I will get my hair cut

I have actually been coming here for a couple years now and I absolutely love this place. I see Luis so I usually see him at the Beside station instead of the actual 3^rd floor I believe. But he always gives me a beautiful cut. I’m not naturally a blonde and my hair is really really really color resistant. He always manages to give me the perfect color. In reference to being a blonde sometimes it’s a bit difficult to get someone to not make your hair look orange; which he never does. Actually been contemplating to go back for some new highlights. So I think I’ll be making a trip shortly.

I love the service here at Hayato NY. My stylist, Toshi, is excellent; very attentive and knowledgeable. He’s also easy to talk to, and does not rush through my hair at all.
You do need cash here (their discounts work on cash).

I m a regular customer from John Barrett Salon and trying to save some money from hair cut. Figure this place might be a good shot but I was wrong. I ask for director to cut my hair and its a huge mistake. He try to convince me that he couldn’t cut the way I want its because I want to keep the length. And I finally told him to cut however short he want because I want my trim looks good, otherwise it will be really frizzy without blow dry. And guess what happened? My trim look the same and it just got shorter. Ok, now I get it, he doesn’t know how to cut it. What a good director!
If you have thick hair, please avoid this place.

I’ve only been here twice — once for color, the latest for a cut — and that haircut established Hayato as my go-​to salon.
A-​mi was my stylist for the cut and she did a phenomenal job and I get compliments on the cut she gave me every day. Not only did she create something that was even better than I imagined, she added in her own suggestions that I didn’t even think of (like lightening the back of the head to keep my head cool in the summer, creating a faux-​mbre out of my previously dyed portions of hair). The best haircut I’ve ever received. She is also very personable and pleasant to talk to!

Please don’t waste your time with this salon they are unprofessional and pricing is very confusing. They have a hard time understanding what you need and the highlights and hair cut was very disappointing.

Had my hair cut and colored by Marine who I see for the first time. She was excellent and probably one of the most attentive and sweetest stylists there and I have been going to Hayato London and new York for years now.
Update: the day after I wrote the below, someone called me from the salon and offered to give me back the discount if I came in. Thank you for calling, I appreciate it. Not sure if I’ll come in but still changed from 4 to 5 stars

I read previous reviews and called to check that if I brought cash and came during the week I would get 10% off, which is very welcomed as I’m a student who has had no income for two years When I usually spend hundreds there.
I called twice as I had to confirm times and both times we spoke about the 10% discount. Once it was even the receptionist who brought it up.
When I checked out, no discount was applied even though I had gone out of my way to get cash! I didn’t ask as I trusted them to be on top of their calculations.
It’s not a huge amount of money but I just feel jipped and that whoever was on checkout was unprofessional. I still tipped the full 20% obviously.

My sister raved about this place. The Unilocal score only seemed to reinforce the idea that this place is top notch. My first haircut was satisfactory but the stylist was squeamish about fading my beard into the hairline. Fine.
But perhaps a person with a stronger grasp of English ought to work the front desk. Apparently my appointment for tomorrow turned into «friday» and this was only discovered because of my own sleuthing while Japanese people wringed hands and minced about me for ten minutes.
Two out of five. No thanks, Hayato.

Satisfied with the hair cut by Tatsumi. Sala washed my hair and messaged scalp, shoulder and back. I will visit them again.

After spending several years contemplating getting my hair permanently straightened, I finally settled on getting it thermally reconditioned /​Japanese straightened at Hayato. It was one of the best decisions I could have made!
I have fine, but very curly hair. I wanted to get my hair permanently straightened for a few reasons — I prefer the look of straight hair, it looks more put together for work, it is easier to style and care for, etc. Tatsumi was my stylist, and he did a great job. Whereas before my hair would take 45 minutes to blow dry and straighten, it now takes 5 minutes to blow dry and it is perfectly straight and shiny. No hair straightener required. I can also let it air dry and it dries pin straight. I was so amazed the first few times I washed it.
The entire process took about 3 hours. The chemicals they put on your head are definitely strong, but I didn’t have an adverse reaction. You cannot wash your hair for at least 48 hours after the treatment — that was the hardest part. I recommend going Friday and hibernating until washing it Monday morning. I was worried my hair would turn out super dry/​damaged but it was not the case. It’s not any more damaged than it would be using a normal hair straightener.
I’ve had my hair done twice now at Hayato. It’s pricey, but all the time I save by no longer being required to style my hair in the mornings makes it worth it. Highly recommend Hayato and Tatsumi!

I have been going here for my haircuts for a while now. My stylist Toshi is really meticulous and professional! Most importantly he listens then suggests with his expertise. I always walk out with a happy smile on, and trust me, I’m so picky about my haircut. Most staffs are well-​trained and courteous. Highly recommend!

I couldn’t get an appointment at the salon I usually go to, so I decided to try out a new place today.
In terms of space, this is perhaps the best Japanese hair salon I have come across in the city. Usually the Japanese salons here are tiny and narrow. They carry a charm for certain people, but I prefer big and open spaces. Just when I thought all Japanese salons in NYC are cramped, I found this place.
I managed to get a same-​day appointment here! It’s a bit pricier than what I am used to paying at my salon, but I soon realized the experience was totally worth the $ 70 plus tips I spent!
My hairstylist Tatsumi was very nice. He studied the picture I brought with me and did an amazing job with my hair! It actually turned out exactly as it looks in the picture I brought with me!
I absolutely cannot forget to mention the lovely lady who washed my hair and gave me an amazing massage. Every salon gives you a complimentary massage, but the one I got here blew all of the other ones out of the water. I felt like I was getting a professional massage at a spa. As someone who doesn’t have the extra cash to indulge in such luxuries, I think the massage itself was worth every penny I spent there.
This place has a stamp card where you can collect stamps and get free treatments later on. I definitely recommend this place!

I just moved to nyc from nj and I was looking for a salon where they know how to cut Asian hair well. So of course I turned to Unilocal.Got great reviews so I thought why not.
I called for an appointment for a cut and dry the same day — for «right now» I said — and they got me in with Tatsumi in the next half hour. Pretty good! Though it was 3 in the afternoon on a Thursday.
I arrived early and was pleasantly surprised. The place was clean with cool décor. The chocolates and water and tea while you wait was a nice touch but I didn’t wait long enough to sample any.
The girl who washed my hair gave a very nice scalp massage while shampooing, and back massage when I got seated! Tatsumi took his time and made sure I was happy with what he was doing. The final result was well worth the time and money. I’ll definitely be back!

While I was sorry to see Nao leave, but I got another hair dresser and he’s very good. This place knows how to work on any kind of hair. I’m a white girl with baby fine hair and he does a great job. My mom and my step-​father both go to him. So we know it’s the best. Give it a chance won’t be disappointed.

Hey Ladies,
I went here for the famous Japanese Hair Straightening. After lots of research and being a new native in NYC, I wanted to ensure that I would get the best service and treatment. As a result, I decided to pay a little more to go to a place that assures quality. I’m content, but the results are not as great for what you pay for.
I’ve gotten the straightening treatment done before and afterwards my hair is PIN straight. But, it’s been about 3 weeks since I’ve gotten the straightening done… although my hair is MUCH more manageable, soft, smooth… it’s not completely straight towards my bangs and the middle of my hair. Also, sometimes the back has kinks. :(In addition, maybe it’s based on my shampoo/​conditioner but my hair isn’t extremely shiny and still has frizz. After paying $ 330, you would expect close to perfect hair.
The bright side is the whole process is very relaxing and everyone is nice. But I wish the results were better.

I have lived in NYC for about a year and a half and have tried a a handful of different salons. The last hair cut I got before coming to Hayato was at Ludlow Blunt (formerly Tommy Gun’s) and while I was very happy with my haircut there, I did not quite understand why I had to pay $ 95 to receive it. So when it came time to trim my locks again, I started the research over and figured I might as well try to find a new salon.
Unilocal reviewers brought me to Hayato salon and I am so glad they did. I just had the best hair experience I have ever had. The wash was the best wash (by far) that I have ever received. This salon has magically found a way to eliminate the uncomfortable feeling of having your head rest on the sink while they wash your hair. I was perfectly reclined, my head was supported, and in tandem with the hair washing and conditioning was a scalp massage. The guy washing my hair pressed on points that instantly eased all head tension. I had read that the haircuts come with a short massage, so I was under the impression that the hair washing was the massage experience, and I am glad I thought wrong.
After the wonderful wash I was led to my chair where I received a ten minute neck and shoulder massage by someone who was very clearly a trained professional. At this point, I was already feeling like I received my money’s worth and figured that the haircut would just be a typical haircut — but again, I am glad that I thought wrong.
My stylist was super sweet and was so easy to communicate with. I told her the length I wanted, and let her know I was very open to her suggestions. She checked with me as she cut to make sure I was happy with what was going on and then after my hair was dry she spent another fifteen or so minutes continuing to trim making sure each piece of hair was falling in the right place. I felt like my hair was being cut specifically to fit my face and not just a «one cut fits all» which I have experienced at other salons.
All in all, I could not be happier with my decision to go to Hayato today, and am already looking forward to my next haircut.

I’ve been going to Hayato for two years and always leave with a great cut and style. Toshi is wonderful at what he does — I trust him completely with his suggestions and he always makes me look and feel fantastic. He’s detailed with my layers and thorough with making sure it’s even.
The staff is very nice and professional — they offer coat check, chocolate candy, tea and water while you wait. The space is clean and huge with plenty of room for a lot of stations. When the assistant washes your hair, you get a relaxing scalp and neck massage. After the shampoo (that’s smells so nice — fruit and citrus), they’ll give you a 20-​minute back massage!
I love the personal touches: there is always a «Welcome — So happy to see you» note at your station, they ask for a preference on magazine to read and they recognize your birthday! I was surprised by a Happy Birthday sign drawn on the mirror and a gift of Baked by Melissa cupcakes even though my birthday is in two weeks! It was very thoughtful of them to appreciate their customers.
Highly recommended for wonderful service.

I decided to go here because I knew it would be reliable and I wouldn’t end up with a disastrous haircut I would hate. The store front doesn’t look like anything special and you have to go to the second floor to find Hayato. Don’t be dissuaded if you think you’re in the wrong place.
When you enter, the staff are very professional offering to store your things in a personal locker. There is a comfortable couch area where you can wait and drink tea/​water. The stylist (I asked for Toshi) sits you down before your wash and asks you what you’d like. The assistant (mine was Kathrie) did an amazing job washing my hair; it was so relaxing.
Toshi did a great job of delivering what I wanted. He didn’t try to make small talk with me which I like and followed my directions. The 15-​min massage Kathrie gave me was phenomenal and she really took her time with me. All in all, a very enjoyable and relaxing experience for a $ 70 haircut. My boyfriend, family and colleagues were quite pleased with the results too!
