Where can I start? This place effing rules. J. Crew for more than it costs online? Where the eff do I sign? I mean, can you imagine? I can grab a rosé with my boy Spencer at Smith & Mills and when he walks in wearing the same shirt as me, I can zing him with, «I got more miles buying mine, dude.» Nice. Got ‘em.

A good cashmere sweater is hard to find, especially in a striped pattern. J Crew’s uncompromising dedication to their quality cashmere selection keeps me coming back for more, year after year. Dreaming of next year’s collection already!

This location is the ‘liquor store’, meaning a cool aesthetically from exterior to interior, but apparently also remarkably overstaffed. Spotted it in Inc. mag but felt completely unwelcome given the vibe of the clan of staffers.

In some ways it’s a cool store but totally impractical set up. I realize that sometimes functionality has to take a back seat to style in store design, but this place is so poorly lit that even on a summer day, you can’t figure out if you like the merchandise. Is this blue or black? Who knows… There are other places that know how to strike the right balance — Odin and Bird come to mind. Then there’s the staff. Walked in with a friend and not one of the 6 staff people said a word. When trying to squeeze through a tight area of the store at the same time as one of their staff I stopped to let the staffer through. Not only did he not let the customer go first (service 101 fail) he didn’t even acknowledge that someone had done something polite for him with a «thank you.» Not saying I need to be coddled in a retail environment. In fact, sometimes it’s nice when people just leave you alone to shop. But in a place this small it’s actually awkward when everyone goes out of their way to ignore you. In terms of clothing selection, it’s good. But nothing better or different than what’s available in other men’s boutiques throughout the city. Can really think of a reason to go back.

This is an incredibly cool shop, everyone is all helpful and friendly, love the interior and stuff.

Would you like to feel like a real man? GQ? The staff is incredibly helpful, not only at finding you what you’re looking for, but giving honest opinions about what works for you and matching the outfits appropriately. This is the ultimate shop for guys with style. Great selection, fair prices and a downtown old school NY atmosphere representative of what a guy’s shopping experience should be.

They could sure turn up the AC in this place. but I was quite intrigued by the different offerings, some of which cannot be found at the regular J. Crew stores (but perhaps, online).
The store is men’s clothes only, but they serve a variety of J. Crew collaborations (Alden for J. Crew, etc) and other brands you wont typically see at a typical J. Crew retail store. There is definitely a lot more selection here than at the J. Crew Men’s (only) stores. I also loved the variety and colors of the pants and shorts.
Price ranges from regular J. Crew costs ($ 40ish) to around $ 500+ for jackets and shoes. I had to dock a star because they don’t have any sales or follow any of the retail J. Crew ones.
Love the décor/look&feel… glad I randomly passed by!

This is a great shop, JCrew edited down to the best of the best and their «partner»). Everyone who works here is extremely friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to accommodate me, a woman who likes to wear men’s clothing. German, (spelled Herman) in particular is a great employee! He’s very helpful and has figured out several customer service solutions.

Cool concept to house the J. Crew in a former «Liquor Store» full of Americana etc., but the execution is lousy. Crammed with stuff to the ceiling, it’s virtually impossible to find what you’re looking for. Since they don’t have a lot of extra space to stock inventory, they are bound to be out of your size, especially if you take a XS or S. The Men’s collection has improved significantly in recent years, but this store does not do it justice. You are better off at 1040 Madison.

Heaven. Overpriced, but Heaven.

As a loyal follower of almost everything J. Crew does (long before I was lucky enough to be featured on their website) I had drooled over the online catalogue of the things in the «Liquor Store» for years. It’s quite unlike the traditional stores, being the only one that’s devoted solely to men as well as featuring quite a lot of exclusive vintage pieces and Liquor Store only items that are limited production. Some of the prices here can be a bit shocking, but the quality is always outstanding and I’ve got several pieces that will last me a lifetime. If anyone was ever really looking to get me something I would send them here without delay.
Apparently the whole «liquor store» aspect has confused many shoppers. Firstly, I’m not sure how this is genuinely possible, as the entire outside of the store is loaded with large windows showcasing the fashions of the season. The actual naming comes from the historic building that the shop is located in, which like many American historical buildings isn’t able to be remodeled by the new occupants, hence the signage remains. I do love how the J. Crew folks have brought in many antique elements to match the history of the building, and I wish I had brought the camera out even more to highlight some of the unique elements.
The staff here is the typical friendly crew that you’ll find in almost any of their line of stores, although maybe a bit more stylish due to discounted access to these wonderful items. I think that some folks might be intimidated or put off by the staff based on their appearance (yes, they’re obviously a bit more hipster’ish), but those same people probably wouldn’t really like the clothes here anyway due to a conflict of styles. As you would expect, it’s full of flannels, plaids, tweeds, and other sorts of great authentic fabrics, but there is also a really nice suiting section that you don’t find in traditional stores, along with much more male accessories than I’ve ever seen in a standard J. Crew.
I got so caught up perusing all the little items in this shop that I almost entirely forgot about my reservations at the 2 Michelin star Corton right next door… I think that speaks volumes more than any personal recommendation I could give.

OK, I get the pain associated with some hipster interactions, we all do. Mickey Drexler has gone to some length to assemble a very interesting group of unusual and coordinated styles that are impossible to find anywhere else. Of course paying $ 300 for a flannel shirt is not for the weak of heart but I digress.
The point of my post is to compliment the product knowledge of the staff. I called all three J Crew men’s stores in NY including the Liquor Store. I did this to triple check a sizing issue with the aforementioned KATO flannel shirt along with a base layer question.
I follow the company from a financial perspective but had never set foot in a J Crew before. I’m a Patagonia kind of guy and have little interest in the preppy look of J Crew (apologies to the Obamas). Anyway, these guys really helped out with some detailed questioned, knew their facts and all agreed in one way or another.
So my suggestion is to call them to avoid the critical judgement of casual observation and ask away and when satisfied buy online. Better for me since I live 3000 miles away from the nearest J Crew men’s store, at least for the time being.

Folks, what do you look for when you’re shopping at a store besides the products? Ambiance (music, décor, the way products are laid out, etc.) I think as experienced shoppers that we all are, we know what to expect from J.Crew. Their men’s collection has been strong in recent years, we all like the way they’ve integrated good ol’ Americana values with sensible & modern fits, with their nice chambray shirts and special edition Barracuda jackets (yours truly has one sitting in the closet right now).
But look…
I am not against hiring people with a certain look and give these employees partial discounts to wear more of their stuff at work, but at some point I’m sick and tired of the same guys with their mustaches and haircuts and arm-​sleeve tattoos and their same attitude that I’m below them to be in their presence. I was so uncomfortable there I didn’t even want to try on the blue deck sweater that you had for sale at $ 98. What a pity, this Liquor Store idea was brilliant.
Look, J. Crew (whoever you are), I’m not asking you to make your employees kiss our @$$ whenever we step into the store. All I’m asking for is someone who turns all the way around and smile (not turn your head 45 degrees sideways and glance at me up and down), and make me feel comfortable and welcomed. A place where I’m comfortable enough to want to try stuff on, because guess what — I might want to buy some of your overpriced stuff at your really nice store with the nice music and old school layout that makes me feel richer than the teacher salary that I’m on.

It’s a bit cramped, but the staff deserves an award for creative staging of their merchandise. I felt like I was in a 19^th-​century general store.
Being a Saturday and therefore quite busy, I wasn’t altogether very inclined to stay for long. But I’d be more than happy to return the next time I find myself with some spending money burning a hole in my pocket.
They had some very tempting shoe selections, by the way… A weakness of mine.

It’s hard not to be charmed by the look of the Liquor Store. Unfortunately, the bar has dusty, half-​empty bottles of booze… but no… no drinks. (Why not, J. Crew?)
Boys, come try on a Barbour coat and a new Ludlow slim-​cut suit. Ladies will love it.

A longtime wearer of the things the Liquor Store now carries (Barbour coats, vintage boots, and others come to mind), I am seriously enjoying the period wherein Americana/​Urban Prep/​Trad is popular.
I also really enjoy the Liquor Store because I know what to expect. At the general J. Crew Store in Midtown or the Men’s Store near my office in Soho, there is a lot of the whole «Oh, a $ 60 shirt? Oh, a $ 300 blazer? Oh, a $ 2500 suitcase!!!» realizations. Liquor Store is pretty much exclusively what J. Crew puts out that is of the highest quality, and prices.

When the Marlboro man turns corporate, this will be where he shops.
Its a small store, dark and cozy. The store workers were friendly and laid back. There is a little bit of everything here: boots, slacks, those cool pre-​wrinkled button-​down shirts that I somehow cant replicate despite leaving clothes on the floor in a ball for weeks… unfortunately its all a bit rich for my blood at this point in time.
The two best things about Mens Shop?
1) They have a nice, albeit limited, selection of tie clasps & cuff links. A tie clasp with a German Shepherd face on it !?! Another with a flyfishing hook on it ?!? (Yes, when Im not reviewing liquor-​serving facilities, this is what revs my engine, apparently) … these pieces, however, were fairly inexpensive– I think only $ 49 ??
2) They have «store events» … which explains the variety of bourbon behind the counter.

This is J. Crew’s first men’s only shop. Housed in a an old liquor store it features the best items that J. Crew carries for men (no sales stuff here!) The space itself is really cool but tiny and overflowing with merchandise. The staff was plentiful but didn’t take notice of us until I started checking out the antique watches.
Worth a look if you’re a shopaholic like myself but if I lived in New York I would probably shop at the store on 5^th Ave first.
