I come here for haircolor for years which basically says it all. The place is light and airy. The people are friendly and always on time. Michelle my colorist does a great job and is very nice and her assistant Patricia is a sweetheart and covers for Michelle as well on her off days. They run on time and the prices are reasonable.

I have been going to Manal at this salon for over 4 years and will never let anyone else cut my hair. She is beyond amazing in every way. She is extremely talented and will give you the best advice on how to look sexy, young, and stylish. She is very honest. If she thinks you need to grow your hair and not cut it, she will tell you. She will give you tricks to make the most of your natural beauty. She explained that my bangs were cut to wide across my face by another salon and suggested to grow out the framing of the ends to slim my face. I trust her opinion on everything. I have recommended Manal to all my girlfriends and now they only trust her with their hair. Even if they live out of state. I adore this woman.

This review is about a week late, but I had to make sure I left a review.
I work at Jacob’s Pickles on 85^th and Amsterdam. (Shameless plug, run there! It’s the best southern food in the city! Seriously look it up on Unilocal) I was taking care of a table and she mentioned Aphroditi. She just so happens to be Jacob’s wife. I just moved to the city and was looking for a good stylist and decided to keep it in the family and give her a try!
When I got to the salon I told her that I wanted to cut a minimum of 8″ off my hair and donate it to help women and children with cancer. We looked up the requirements and she was very careful about making sure it was 8″ long.
After the big snip she spent a long time making sure that my hair turned out exactly the way I wanted it. At first she didn’t cut it as choppy because she wanted to make sure I was happy. Then when I told her to go more she happily chopped up my hair. I left with an AMAZING hair cut. I am so particular about my hair and it came out great! I now let it air dry and have had so many compliments on it! I really wanted a cut that would allow me to let it air dry. I try not to use heat on my hair unless it’s for a special occasion. So the fact that I can get away with air drying it is amazing.
Just go to Aphroditi. She’s amazing and really listens! And then go to Jacobs pickles after for lunch!

This was so unprofessional! My hair was cut by a guy names ALex, I asked for a TRIM, and I came out with 1 inch short hair from having almost 6 inches! I asked to cut the back of my hair and trim the rest. As he was cutting the hair was uneven so he kept cutting until it was kind of equal on both sides. He realized it was too short and asked me if i think its too short. As if he can grow it longer !!!
He did not follow anything that i asked him. The sides of my hair are totally not matching, left is much shorter then the right. I am not even sure if this kid went to school!!!
I would never go back again.

Always busy, but never crazy, this location is justifiably a neighborhood institution. Great for cuts, color, and straightening treatments, at a price that won’t blow your budget.
Really the nicest staff ever. Jeff April, when he could be on auto-​pilot, still takes the time to discuss the health of my hair and ways to tweak my look. Melinda doesn’t just wash my hair, she also delivers an awesome scalp massage that makes me feel like I’ve been to a spa. Such an upbeat, cheerful shop.

Short hair can change dramatically in six weeks. I’m always astonished to receive compliments from total strangers both just after a cut and in the 6^th week when my hair definitely needs attention. It’s all thanks to Jeffry April.

Elia is a master nail technician as well as a wonderful waxer. I have been her client for many years and would follow her wherever she went. She does a Shellac manicure that is perfection. Her pedicures are flawless. She uses organic wax and makes the process the best it could be. I am a very particular person and she meets all my expectations. Make an appointment! She is always on time. There is no one better!

Manal has been cutting my hair for two years and I love her! Would highly recommend her.

Lousy customer service — nobody is managing this place. Colorist mumbled that i shouldn’t have been brought back because she was running really late. Didn’t offer anything, didn’t apologize, could have cared less. she doesn’t check color and other employees sit around when the buzzer goes off and read magazines — I had to ask someone to find them to get the color out. Assistants are not great and i once had my hair blown dry by someone in a chair blocking the bathroom door. This place needs a manager big time — and to have staff learn to welcome people with a smile and make them feel comfortable. i have found a much better experience at Scott J — I’m done with this place.

Tina is awesome!!! I’m a blonde and she highlights my hair to make it look incredibly natural and beautiful; it also looks natural when growing out. I followed her over from a former salon and have been going to her for seven years. I have never been anything but thrilled with the results of her work; cut and color. Again, she is awesome!!!

I used to be one of those guys who paid way way too much for a haircut — especially when wearing a buzz cut for so many years. A few years back I couldn’t get an appointment at my usual place and my partner recommended Trish (Patricia) at Jeffrey Stein since he’d been loyal to her for more than a decade. Despite my bias against ‘chain’ salons, it didn’t take long to understand why he keeps going back. Trish’s keen eye, listening skills and talented hands helped me do what I thought impossible — grow my hair out and love it. It’s never looked better (or so people say) and if great hair weren’t enough, I find myself laughing more often than not sitting in Trish’s chair. She’s a great person on top of being a talented stylist.
The one component of the service that could use streamlining in payment for services vs. product. On more than one occasion the cashier (for lack of better word) had to reverse changes and then recharge under two separate transactions which always seems to take more time than it should.
All in all, I couldn’t recommend Trish more and think you’ll find the salon and its staff welcoming, fun and most important — talented!

I had a living social deal for this salon for a haircut and kerastase treatment. It was very difficult to get an appointment like other Unilocalers have said, they only allow you to come midweek, since every time slot on a «Friday is booked for the next two months.» Although I did manage to get a Friday appointment, as soon as they realized that I had a living social, they called me back to cancel and would not reschedule another appt. unless it was midweek.
So I ended up going in Wednesday morning and had Jacob as my stylist. I walked in expecting what everyone else said, but it wasn’t as bad as I had imagined. The shampoo guy politely took my coat and I sat down to have a consultation with Jacob, then he sent me off to get my hair shampooed and the kerastase treatment was applied. They did go really skimpy on the treatment cause it felt like they just applied a thin layer to the surface and sent me to the heat for 10 minutes.
Came back, Jacob took a snip and asked to make sure the length he was cutting off was ok for me before proceeding with the rest of the cut. I got long layers done, pretty simple and quick. He asked me how I wanted to style my hair and did a great job with the blowout. He asked me once if I wanted to buy some product and didn’t push anything on me. Said my color was bad and he could fix it if I wanted, but wasn’t rude.
Maybe I came in on a Wednesday morning or maybe they are trying to improve after reading the other Unilocalers comments? But overall, he did a good job and I was happy with the results.

This place has terrible customer service and should be avoided. If you call and make an appointment, they will have availability. As soon as you mention that you have a coupon, they suddenly don’t have availability at that time and say they will call you back.
This is not a way to run a reputable business. Either put restrictions on the coupon regarding which hours you accept the coupon, or don’t run it at all.
Even if you don’t have a coupon, I’d be very wary of doing business with an establishment that has such shady business practices. God knows what they’ll do to your hair!

I made an appointment to have my base color and highlights done with no ammonia product Inoa by Michelle. In our lengthy discussion I informed her that I did not want to continue with a light reddish base and wanted to go back to a neutral light brown with yellow gold highlights. I wanted to get rid of the red that was there and deepen the color. What I walked out with was exactly what I did not want — my base is reddish, my existing golden highlights have vanished, replaced by ashy streaks on reddish base. It is disgusting and not remotely what I wanted. She was juggling about three other clients while i was in the chair. Never checked once, but I have to assume that even if she did, the results would have been the same. She simply did not care.

It is possible to achieve my desired color. I have had it before. I have to accept responsibility for remaining in the chair when she kept saying, if you lift the color it will be reddish. Afterwards she would not even speak to me about it .
Extremely unprofessional, sloppy work.
Never again will I set foot in this salon. Avoid at all costs and especially
beware MIchelle.

I come here for color with Aneta, and happen to really like her. She is only a colorist, and definitely knows what she’s doing. Each time I come for a touch up, she asks how I like my color and is always open to tweaking things if I so desire. A great aspect is that you don’t have to pay for a blowout after color if you don’t want to — they have a blow dry/​style station with lots of dryers and great products/​brushes for you to style yourself. I’ve only had a cut here once, and it was just okay.
The décor is pretty and very clean, and it’s a nice relaxing space on the UWS. They always offer you a beverage and magazines while you’re there and don’t pressure you to buy the products. They also text you the day before your appointment for confirmation or cancel, which is neat.

Must write this review due to the poor customer service from the manager Arthur as well as a colorist. I had gone in for a cut (arthur did the cut, and would NOT recommend him for the price point) highlights and products which totaled in the 400’s or so. I made an appt for my roots and had to cancel. Then rescheduled which I was then informed they cancelled because I «never cancelled my last appt and called to let Michelle know I was running late and kept her waiting for 3hours and never showed up.». This is absurd and they were pretty much telling me I am a liar!!! Horrible customer service as I had cancelled and never called to say anything like that that day. Especially since I had to go out of town! Will go back to my girls at serge normandt in the west village where they know what they’re actually doing. I have never experienced this before, just awful.

I was extremely disappointed with the quality of service as well as the haircut I received at this salon.
I bought the living social package and I think the fact that I wasn’t paying full price made the staff care much less about the treatment I was given.
The person who cut my hair, Jeff April, was an awful stylist and did nothing that I had asked for. Because he had another full paying client, he sent me to a shampoo girl to get my hair blown out. Once that was finished, he did not come to see if any adjustments were needed or to even be polite and see how everything came out.
The haircut was terribly done and I would never come back here again. I’m sure they would do a nice job if I were paying full price, but if you have the voucher from LivingSocial I would be aware of the treatment you may receive here.

In addition to the bad haircut I received, I awoke this morning to comments made on my Unilocal account from the stylist himself, cursing me out and accusing me of being late. The customer is always right and no one should be spoken to like this. Just terrible.

Word to stylists: Don’t ask me who last cut my hair, ok? 9 times out of 10 the answer will be: me. Yes I do have this unfortunate habit of thinking I can do anything better than anyone else. And no, I wont admit it. I’ll make up a name. Somewhere downtown, somewhere tres chic, of course.
Given this my history, a 3-​star rating is really an accomplishment. Over the past three years I have never been to the same salon more than once – partially due to group coupons and partially due to my acute commitment phobia.
Every time I sit in the barber’s chair, I get filled with anticipation: could this be the one? The one haircut that will spark in me an eternal devotion to one and only one stylist? And this time I thought maybe… just maybe. You see, Vlad, my stylist happened to be a hot and awesome Uzbek from Samarkand with amazing ideas for some potentially Unilocal-​worthy food finds in Rego Park. Never mind that I asked for pixie and got yet another a-​line bob. I walked out pretty convinced that it looked good. He knew best, I figured, he haadddd to.
When I got home I looked in the mirror for a minute. And then I reached for the scissors… Next time I’ll find the one… next time.
But try Jeffrey Stein. Normal, well-​adjusted or simply less serious folk will find this salon to be well-​priced, clean, welcoming and just the right amount of upscale.

Since the recession, I haven’t been able to visit Trish at her new digs, but an endorsement for her all the same (previously at nearby K’s Salon):
Extremely professional, sweet, an absolute joy. I get compliments all the time about her delicate handiwork. While she charges a lot, its absolutely worth every penny!

I just moved from SF and was in desperate need of a haircut. I never realized it would be so hard to find a place to go. After some Unilocal research and a recommendation, I ended up here.
Walking in, I was greeted by a very friendly receptionist and shown where to put my coat. Instead of taking me to a dressing room, I had to «change» in the front area. This seemed odd, but I guess ok.
My stylist was super friendly and seemed to understand what I wanted. She whisked me over to the color stations. Once I was set to go (all over black, pretty hard to screw up), I grabbed a coffee and a magazine and was ready to relax. But, to my surprise, I was asked to move because they needed my station. Again, not a huge deal but still I wanted my comfy seat, not the uncomfortable bench.
Washing…this was bad. The seat was so low I had to push myself up on my toes (and I’m tall!) just so my head would make it to the sink. Water down my neck, many times, and no head massage! Maybe I’m spoiled, but once your cut/​color approaches the $ 200 mark, I think you deserve some pampering.
On to the cut… she was quick and, again, seemed to understand what I wanted. Then she cut my bangs… while they were wet! I’m not a stylist and I even know this is a no-​no. They she styled them with a round brush. She took this same brush to my whole head. I have an a-​line cut, blunt, I want no curl. I looked like I was in the sixth grade. Also, upon inspection when I got home, I realized what a bad cut it was! I had random hairs that were long and my bangs were a mess. Only good thing was the back, it did lay very nicely.
Overall, evaluation: The color turned out great, but the cut was mediocre at best, and the overall experience was lacking. When going to the salon I want to walk out thinking «I look fab! Too bad I can’t style my hair this way tomorrow.» Instead I was just hoping I could make it home before running into someone.
