«It is with a mix of sadness and profound pride that we announce that Mahdia, Oyé, Danielle, and Sekai will be closing MODSquad Cycles on October 31, 2014. Six years ago, barely a year after we moved to New York City, we decided to offer Uptown a bike shop worth loving, with a super service department and quality bike stock ranging from affordable commuters to higher end race bikes. We did that and had fun doing doing it. In those early days, Dan (Manager Emeritus), Justin, and Dale, Will and Sean made our service department worth frequenting and Toby, Enjoli, Chris, and Jesus delighted in impeccable customer-​service up front. Many more joined us over the years. MODSquad even offered six young people their first „real“ jobs. But as Robert Frost wrote, „Two paths diverged in a wood.“ That has been true for our family and now that other path is calling us back to Europe and a life overseas.»

Wonderful, friendly service! I went in to get my checked out after not using if for a year. They were thorough, quick, and very, very reasonable. Will definitely go back again.

The employees at Mod Squad go are exceptionally passionate about bikes and about customer service.
The shop is small and I don’t know how to compare their inventory compares to other bike shops. They have about twenty five different bike models and are able to explain and recommend bikes for all needs. They also have a wide variety of accessories including awesome North Street panniers and bags.
The service department is efficient and professional. I have had a number of repairs and tune ups done and they are always completed thoroughly and quickly.
This is a true neighborhood shop, no big chain impersonality here.

I bought my bike here when I moved to the neighborhood. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful in finding the perfect bike for what I needed.
While I’m not a hardcore, tight pants wearing type of biker, I ride pretty much everyday.

I have been going to ModSquad since it opened. We were initially very excited about the bike shop. My family has purchased two bicycles, accessories and had numerous repairs at this shop.

Great service and staff. Able to communicate well and get the job done expeditiously. Knowledgeable and helpful about anything I asked. Great prices, too! Thanks Mod Squad!

While this place still rocks, be careful if they a have younger, less-​seasoned person working on your bike (and by younger, I mean these 2 guys looked like teenagers). I’ve gone here twice recently and have been seriously let down. The first time, the young guy who «fixed» my bike didn’t actually solve the problem at all. The 2^nd time, another very young guy (seemed like they were teaching him the ropes), didn’t put back my breaks and left my wheel halfway unscrewed, Needless to say, I could’ve been seriously hurt on my bike ride home.
But still, the other guys working there are cool and know their stuff. Just be careful for the newbies.

Amazing service. Casually walked in a few months ago to ask how much it would cost to service and take a look at a problem on my fixed speed. One of the guys tells me they’re really busy, they could book the service in but it would be maybe about a week before they could do it, but says he’ll take a quick look at it to see if the problem is serious. He takes my bike into the workshop and proceeds to diagnose then repair the problem which took a total of approximately 10 minutes to rectify. He puts everything back together then hands the bike back to me. I ask how much? He says don’t worry about it! I was shocked and pleasantly surprised. Ended up leaving a tip for him. I highly recommend this place. Ended up going back a couple times to rent bikes for friends when they were visiting NYC. Awesome place.

I’ve had nothing but great experiences at this shop. They never try to upsell and always quickly can recommend exactly what you need. They charge reasonable prices and are wizards with tune ups. Rob is an excellent mechanic and has even thrown in a complementary tune up on occasion.
Next bike I purchase will be here!

Im not a biker but I have a son and he has a bike. Usually we go to Heavy Metal Bikes in East Harlem, but every now and then he runs out of air on the west side & goes to Mod Squad. With or without me being present the staff always helps him out and fills up his tires with free air.
Thats good enough for 5 stars for me!

I was renting from them yesterday. There is a manager there who has no sense of customer service or customer retention. I am never going back there for renting, there is a nicer place down the road on 110 where people use common sense when dealing with their customers. This place ruined my day.

I’ve been here several times. Once while considering purchasing a bike, which I did elsewhere do to style, not service. They also service my Dutch bike which other shops run away from due to its design and components. The service is great, the staff is friendly and the prices are really fair. Whether you need a tuneup, new helmet or new ride, I’d definitely check them out. They also take time to educate the customers. I was considering new tires but couldn’t tell from one brand from the next and the mechanic flipped through the book with me, answering a million questions and pointing me in the right direction. It’s a joy for a bike commuter like me to be respected and treated well instead of ignored.

How 1-​employee can ruin an experience…
All businesses have them. We hope they’re far and few between. The employee «who doesn’t get it.» The employee that doesn’t realize that a good customer experience retains and increases customers.
This morning in the pouring rain, I made a quick trip down to my neighborhood ModSquad Cycles to drop off my bike for assembly and service (recently moved and bike was shipped to me). I made the mistake of arriving 15-​minutes early. But due to the rain, and the fact that I was making a quick drop off, I was anticipating flexibility. Especially since their was an employee already there working and the fact that it was raining cats & dogs and I had a pretty heafty load with me. After knocking, the employee came to the door, wouldn’t open it, but shouted out, he couldn’t help me and come back later, then walked away. Pretty rude. I put my box back in the trunk of my car and hopped into my car, getting ready to drive off from being parked right in front of the business. Just then I noticed the same rude guy coming outside and fixing and lighting a marijuana joint. Yes, great. Too busy to take my package 15 minutes early but finding the time before opening to light a marijuana joint right on the street. I watched in amazement. After he finished, he dropped the small remainder down the subway hole in front of the business and went back inside. I called the store immediately. He answered and I said, «hey, you can’t make a 10min exception but find the time to smoke marijuana before opening.» He denied and said it was a cigarette but I know what I saw and could smell with my passenger window down plus he discarded it right in front of my car.
Just as I was on the phone with him, a woman and her 3-​kids came as well at 11:53. I guess he’s consistently rude because he made them wait outside in the rain as well.
Glad there’s Larry’s down the street. They not only got my business but I purchased an additional bike plus accessories.
Guess impressions or in this case bad ones remind me as a consumer, just because they’re conveniently located, never accept rude service. All customers should be picky when it comes to common sense experience.
This MODSquad Cycle employee doesn’t get it, and I’m happy to find a business nearby that does. I’ll recommend to my friends and neighbors that they move downy the street to Larry’s.

Bought my first road bike at this establishment. Couldn’t be happier.
PROS:

— try it before you buy it, no pressure
— prices cannot be beat online
— service, service, service! buy a bike here and you get lifetime support!
— honest opinions from each and every staff member. they’ve debated topics I’ve inquired about right in front of me!
CONS:
— I can think of none.

I took my bike to ModSquad due to excessive gear noise and shifting problems. I was greeted by a technician who instructed me wheel the bike to the back work area. He then placed the bike upon the working clamps and spun the back tires and proceeded shift to various gears. He then immediately blamed my shifting and rough riding problem on the brand of bike itself.
He suggested I purchase a more expensive bike at his shop. Seriously considering this I told the technician I would have to get back to him since I already knew I could not afford any of the bikes on display. I then sadly went to Heavy Metal 3 times only having them tell me the same story.
Disappointed I took it to Larry’s Freewheeling where they completely replaced the cassette, hub and gave the bike a grease job. Within minutes, the bike rode like greased lightning, quiet, smooth and very fast.
Modsquad by all means is a professional business and probably if I did have the money to burn, would have purchased a new bike. But then it’s much easier to define a problem because a certain product does not meet one’s idea of a quality built standard. Their suggestion as well as Heavy Metal’s, of purchasing a new bike just wasn’t in my budget. Most bikes nowadays come from China, so whether you spend $ 100 or $ 600 the basic components can be switched out, replaced and repaired to deliver a product of good to superior quality.
It’s really up to the consumer. If spending a great deal of money will earnestly make you feel as if you do indeed have a superior product or service, then by all means do so.

Bike advocates AND willing to be the vanguards in Harlem.
I never really bought much from MODSquad, but whenever I was browsing, everyone was very friendly. If I had a friend who needed a bike in NYC, this would be the place I’d send them to. A brief 5 minute walk from the 125^th ACBD station.

I had a superb experience at this local shop! I was in the market for a bike and a friend recommended this shop.
Customer service here is on point! I didn’t know much about the different bikes and i had many questions. They guys at the shop where very helpful. If someone didn’t know something, another associate stepped in to help. I test rode a few bikes and the one I was interested in was not available in the shop for test ride, but one of the guys owned a similar model and let me test ride his I thought that was cool and above and beyond.
I would def recommend this place to friends. I ended up with a kick ass bike. My partner loves it (it was a bday gift). I am definitely coming back when I’m ready to purchase a bike for myself!

This place is great — not only is the service fantastic, but they are quick and friendly to boot. I have taken all sorts of bikes here — my Fuji road/​touring, my Raleigh hybrid and my trusty Raleigh 10-​speed mixte from the 80s, and they are able to fix all of them. Also, When I was upgrading my touring bike, they worked with me to get the best components at the least cost.
Also, I just like hanging out in the store. It’s very well designed, with a counter in the mechanic’s area where you can sit and read while they fix your ride.
This is by far my favorite bike shop in the city. No snobby attitude, fair pricing and great work. I’ve left many other bike shops disgruntled with the work performed — NEVER at Mod Squad. Oye and Dan are the best, as well as all the other employees. This is really a jewel of Harlem!

So happy to have this business in my neighborhood. They are so chill, knowledgeable and attentive to customers. I swear these guys are the best. They charged me 13 dollars to put some grips on my road bike and even fixed my chain, that kept getting stuck, at no additional charge. They let you hang out and watch as they work on your bike, too, so no funny business.
They showed me how to put air in my tires and to check how much each tire needed (yes I needed to be shown this)…anyways, they are really great and I will come back to buy some of those funky bells that they sell.

Fantastic experience. I stopped in for a seasonal bike tune up expecting to pay a lot because I was having some trouble shifting. The tech was able to look at my bike right away, told me the shifter needed some cleaning, and 10 minutes later I was out the door. I could have been up-​sold into a full tune up but got a fair shake on this one.
Great addition to the neighborhood.
