Murray’s Bagels

HORRIBLE service and fraudulent. I ordered bagels, smoked salmon, sable and cream cheese, then proceeded to wait for nearly 40 minutes while more than 10 orders that were placed after mine were filled. I did not even need bagel sandwiches to be assembled for me, but for some reason it was much more difficult for them to just put some bagels and fish in a bag. I ordered ¼ pound each of smoked salmon and sable, and when I came home I realized I had been given nowhere near that weight of either, so in addition to having inexcusably long service time, I was also cheated on my order. This place has a near monopoly on bagels in the area and as a result gets away with cheating their customers. Stay away.

Terrible service. Ordered bagels on seamless and it took four hours to deliver. When the order came it was completely wrong.
We called to ask for a refund and spoke to someone named Cruz. He refused to give us a refund and said it was our fault– the door wasn’t labeled enough and they tried to call. They did not try to call and the door is labeled– we’ve never had any delivery issues from this or other restaurants.

I am a fan of this place. The bagels in my opinion are as close to a true NY bagel that you can get. I usually stick to the everything with CC when I am trying a new Bagel place and this time I was really impressed.
Staff is cool and they have a nice selection of treats upfront near the register. The coffee was good too. Only one thing surprised me and that’s the price. Call me old school but $ 6.75 for a bagel and coffee seems a bit high to me. Anyone remember getting a bagel for like $ 1.50? I guess times are a changin’.

What’s with their setup? It’s so inefficient, there has to be a better way. I got a bagel and coffee to go and realized when I reached my destination that the cashier had put milk in the latter $*&%#*&$@
No complaints about the bagel tho. I live a block away now so I’ll be back.

First time trying it and the food was amazing. However, the server was a bit rude. I’ll chalk it off as a bad day and try it again very soon.

First time here. Love this place. Great little bagel shop on 6^th ave. Had the Irish Samon Bagel with an apple juice. Delicious.
Came here everyday for during my business trip in New York. Has a great «New York» feel for a tourist like myself.

A normal bagel place has a simple system: 1. Wait in line; 2. place order; 3. pay for and receive order. Murray’s has decided that such a system is prone to error, so they computerized it. From what I can tell this is their system: 1. Wait in line; 2. place order; 3. print out coffee order; 4. print out food order; 5. check food order and organize; 6. check food order and prepare; 7. complete food order; 8. check food order for completeness; 9. find coffee order that was printed out 5 minutes ago; 10. check coffee order and organize; 11. prepare coffee order; 12. find food order, check again, finalize; 13. receive payment if the customer has waited 15 minutes for a bagel with butter and a black coffee. I cannot be asked to comment on the quality of the food, since I was so happy with the service I didn’t bother eating it. F#c% you guys.

The quintessential New York bagel (raisin w blueberry cream cheese for me), almost always worth the wait in line to get it.
Sort of like the 1 train at rush hour, annoying but you’ll get there.

Ordered a hummus bagel with tomatoes but it tasted like fish. It was so gross. I told them to replace it and they gave me half a bagel back. For real, how cheap can they get?

Une belle histoire que celle de l’origine de ce pain transformé en sandwich et qui commence à apparaitre dans certains lieux en Europe. A l’origine il s’agissait en 1863 de remercier le roi polonais Jan Sobieski d’avoir protégé les juifs contre l’invasion des Turcs. Ce boulanger aurait donc créé un pain en forme d’étrier du nom de «Beugel «en allemand pour rappeler à ce roi sa passion, l’équitation. Ce pain fut par la suite exporté en Amérique par les juifs d’Europe de l’Est.
Un pain plutôt dense qui passé par une cuisson partielle dans l’eau bouillante avant de passer au four. Sa composition étant majoritairement de la farine, de l’eau, du sucre, du malt, des œufs, de la levure et de l’huile végétale.
Si vous questionnez un New-​Yorkais et lui demandez «où se trouvent les meilleurs «Bagel de la ville, il y a de fortes chances qu’il vous mentionne «Murrays’s Bagel «dans l’Avenue of Americas dans Greenwich. Une petite épicerie avec son drapeau noir qui vous indique son emplacement.
Au numéro 500 de la rue, deux bancs pour éventuellement le déguster par beau temps à l’extérieur après avoir reçu sa commande.
Né pensez-​pas obtenir votre bagel immédiatement car ici il faut évidemment faire la queue comme dans n’importe quel bon établissement. Tout se passé en deux étapes; une file pour passer sa commande et une seconde pour réceptionner sa marchandise une fois votre numéro appelé quelques minutes plus tard. Une consommation sur place si vous pouvez trouver où vous asseoir ou alors une vente à l’emporter.
Un plus des bagels, un choix de boissons, produits laitiers et autres pâtisseries sont aussi disponibles.
Certes le pain est ici considéré comme étant l’un des meilleurs mais ce qui est aussi remarquable c’est tout ce choix de produits que l’on peut ajouter pour en faire un sandwich. On y vient surtout pour les nombreux saumons qui sont exposés dans une vitrine réfrigérée.
Il faudra aussi mentionner quel «cream cheese «vous souhaitez car le choix est tout aussi vaste. Pas qu’une seule version nature mais aussi un certain nombre de préparations épicées, elles aussi exposées derrière la devanture du comptoir.
Vous pourrez heureusement consulter le panneau où sont affichés toutes les espèces de bagels, consulter l’impressionnante liste de saumons qui est proposée et si vous souhaiter plutôt une salade ou d’autres types de produits «Delicatessen «, faire votre choix avant de passer votre commande.
Une fois arrivé votre tour, choisissez l’un de ces bagels car j’ai bien dû identifier plus d’une douzaine de sortes ! Nature, à l’oignon, à l’ail, au sésame, au pavot, etc…
Une fois la commande passée, vous irez régler votre dû à la caisse et attendrez que celui-​ci soit préparé.
Je choisirai celui au pavot avec du saumon Wild Pacific King avec du cream cheese nature et ajout de câpres. Il sera emballé dans un papier Kraft, coupé en deux afin de faciliter sa prise en main. Indéniablement le meilleur bagel de ma vie… le saumon qui est le plus gros de l’Atlantique est considéré comme étant l’un des plus gras et plus gouteux. La crème est d’une rare onctuosité. Un moment de pure gourmandise qui est en ce qui me concerne un petit déjeuner parfait. A noter que les bagels peuvent se consommer à n’importe quel moment de la journée et seront aussi grandement appréciés pour le lunch.
Second bagel, celui-​ci «whole wheat everything «, qui signifie à la «farine complet» et avec tous les ingrédients additionnels des autres. Il sera également rempli au cream cheese mais avec un autre saumon, le Belly Lox. A noter qu’il né s’agit pas d’un saumon fumé mais passé dans une eau salée. Un saumon plus salé que les autres mais toujours grandement appréciés par ceux qui en connaissent la préparation.
Pour découvrir ce qu’est un vrai bagel, une adresse qui doit absolument être visitée par tous ceux qui n’ont jamais eu l’expérience d’apprécier ce fabuleux sandwich.

Huge fan of a good bagel with lox but getting the right bagel to complete the job is clutch, these bagels however didn’t quite meet the role. They were a bit too hard and chewy for my liking, while I enjoyed it and didn’t wasn’t ready for my breakfast to end when it did, I’m not running back any time soon. Glad I had it once but onto the next!

To be quite honest, I think Murray’s Bagels have been my favorite bagel shop by far. My favorite to get is the EVERYTHING BAGEL W/​NOVA SCOTIA SALMON SPREAD. I could eat it all day every day! Check it out! ENJOY!

I have a complicated relationship with Murray’s, and today I left very satisfied and impressed. But as you can imagine, this only complicates things further. The short story is that after much consideration, the best way to eat Murray’s bagels is untoasted. New York Purists would scorn me for ever ordering toasted bagels (from Murray’s and in general) but I think it’s important to note that things can be very good here but just as easily go very wrong.
Apart from living close by and not wanting to overdose or overspend there, I’ve had mixed experiences overall. With the always chaotic line situation, having to wait a zillion years if you order anything with eggs, and the fact that messing up orders is kind of common here, I’ve come to avoid Murray’s on the reg. My first couple bagels after moving to the neighborhood had lackluster texture that was too dry and crunchy, and the seasoning on my everythings was only just okay. That being said, I remembered having a very good bagel here when passing through a while back, so I wanted to figure out what was so different (Spoiler alert: pretty sure it was the toasting).
This morning, I made sure to specify that I wanted my whole wheat everything with scallion cream cheese NOT toasted and boy, was it about ten times better than those crunchy sandwiches I’d had last time. While it was courteous of Murray’s to start offering to toast bagels (as their motto will tell you, they refused for a long time), it was probably the right move to serve them up fresh all along.
Coffee –both iced and regular– is quite good and juice selection is too. Pricing is not exorbitant but not cheap either. If you have the time and energy to brave the crowds and the strength to test out the range of toasted vs. untoasted creations, give Murray’s a try.

Just like pizza joints, every New Yorker has a favorite bagel shop. Murray’s Bagels is mine.
Simultaneously fluffy and dense, a bagel from Murray’s dances the line between a light and heavy breakfast. It all depends on your toppings of course, but you can never go wrong with the pile of delicious shmear and lox on top. I have also had BEC breakfast sandwiches at Murray’s that put your corner cart to shame.
Everything I have consumed here rocks, so why the 4 stars? Well… Murray’s has been around a long time, and many other New Yorkers share my passion for it. Hence, long lines. Really long lines. If you go in on a Sat or Sun morning, be prepared to wait 30 mins. 5 – 10 on a normal day. Most of the delay is due to the archaic checkout system in which you stand in one line to order, get a ticket, then stand in another line to pay. Both lines crowd up the joint and get mixed up, people paying get in the way of people picking up food, etc… it’s just a mess. But, once you get your bagels, you won’t be disappointed and will be glad you waited for it.

Great bagels as all before have said. I must admit the internet made me believe these bagels would be life changing — I would categorize them as merely excellent. The ordering and service was chaotic; you must know what you want before you go up to the counter. The menu is extensive. I didn’t find the price exorbitant.

Moving from upper west side bagel heaven to Chelsea was definitely tough — the bagel scene down here leaves much to be desired. We checked out Murray’s since it’s so hyped, but it was pretty disappointing.
The bagels are decent but I don’t love the cream cheese — not flavorful enough for me. And when I added fried eggs to my bagel with cream cheese — it became a melty flavorless mess. And of course being a popular spot in Chelsea/​west village, Murray’s is not cheap and there’s usually a line. It’s just not the cozy, family feeling Sunday morning bagel that I love about New York.
My hunt for a decent bagel in Chelsea continues.

No clue why people go here when there are so many other places that serve a proper bagel.
I got the Rivington Street (lox and sable on poppy seed bagel) which ended up costing $ 15. The bagel was the chewiest bagel I’ve had in a long long time. It literally hurt my jaw to try to finish it, so i didn’t and fed the remaining bit to some baby mice (possibly rats) that were happy to gnaw on it in the park.

My favorite bagels ever ever ever.
I know a lot of people hate on how expensive they are but I don’t know I’m willing to shell out the extra dollar or two for Murray’s! They’re more bagel-​y and cream cheese-​y than the other ones u get from the cart, which just taste like regular bread for the most part.
Also it’s so nice to see that the exterior hasn’t changed after all these years! Apparently they’ve decided to allow their bagels to be toasted now, used to be a big no-​no for bagel lovers everywhere. How times have changed! :p

Les bagels sont divins!!! Le pain frais et fondant. On choisi notre bagel (sésame, oignon, nature, céréales…), on choisi notre cream cheese (nature, herbes,…) et on met tous les ingrédients de notre choix (saumon fumé, poulet, oeuf, salade, bacon…). Le service est rapide. on s’est régalé. On en a eu pour 19 $ pour 2bagels très bien garnis (4 ingrédients différents). A faire absolument!

The bagels are TO DIE FOR. Great place and great food. Only problem is the wait. It takes at least 15 mins to get your food in the morning so come prepared to wait, also finding a place to sit isn’t always the easiest thing. That’s the only reason they don’t get 5 stars from me.

Variety of spreads and bagels with a consistent tough chew to them.
Murrays bagels is a small sandwich shop a short walk from the 9^th ave PATH station. I visited twice and got a whole wheat everything bagel with lox and regular cream cheese the first time and got a regular everything bagel with lox, tomatoes and capers the second. Their freshly squeezed grapefruit juice is great!
Both times the bagels were tough and chewy. The salmon was great but I wouldn’t mind a extra slice. The cream cheese is great but at Ess-​A-​Bagel they are more generous with the salmon and cream cheese.
Their method of getting customers in and out is great. Just walk in, stay to your right, and make your way to the back to order and pay up front. There are a few tables and one long bench so keep an eye out or grab it to go.

I’ve been coming here a lot more often — definitely have grown to love this place. The wait can be really long in the morning and during lunch time, but that’s because it’s so popular.
OH. AND BIG NEWS. THEY FINALLY TOAST THEIR BAGELS. I just noticed this sign they put up in their store that said something along the lines of (in a rather salty tone, haha), «Although we believe that our bagels taste best fresh, because we care about our customers, we are now willing to toast our products.» HUGE FRICKIN’ DEAL.
And also, I love the yogurt parfaits they have. I don’t know what on earth the granola on the bottom is made of, but it is DELISH.
