Sala One Nine

Everything you picture for a Spanish tapas restaurant: strong sangria, small portions and a big bill at the end. Most everything was excellent however the shrimp was overlooked and the papas bravas was just ok. The sangria, white asparagus and fried goat cheese were amazing. I would come back!

Good place to stop by for a pitcher of sangria when in the flatiron district. Casual, down to earth vibe with friendly, professional staff.

Food was luke warm. Tapas prices very high for such small portions. Sangria lacked flavor. No wait, now we see why.

It seems like a popular place. It is very crowded and noisy. Quite difficult to make a conversation here.
Grilled octopus and duck confit were highlight of the night. But other dishes were mediocre and the paella was overly salty.
Service was pretty attentive though.

I enjoyed my night at Sala One Nine with family and new friends. Sala is Spanish, but with touches of basque culture and food, the northern separatist region of Spain, so you will find pinxos and not tapas written on their menu, but for the most part Spanish tapa classics (albondigas, camarones al ajillo, tortilla española, etc) fill their menu.
The ambiance is rustic and candle-​lit, the service was courteous and attentive, and our waiter even offered to add on an extra albondiga to our party of 6 despite there only being 5 albondiga in an order (though I think they forgot as we ended up with 5 anyway, but it was a nice gesture, nonetheless).
We got the datillos (bacon wrapped dates), tortilla, albondigas, duck confit, fried goat cheese, camarones (shrimp) al ajillo, and a couple other dishes I’m forgetting, but most were delicious, though the camarones were the least memorable (don’t order) and the duck confit and datillos were phenomenal (definitely order).

Ate here today for lunch with a big family group of about 12. When I walked into this place and took a whiff I knew it was gonna be amazing. Seriously the smell in this place is like melted butter and garlic with white wine. Amazing. The food was stellar too. We had the tortilla española, chorizo, and the shrimp. Everything was excellently cooked. The space is also warm and inviting and the service was top notch. Highly recommend.

A long-​time favorite, Sala One Nine always delivers a great meal. It suits all occasions — date night, girls night, catching up with an old friend, dinner with your Mom — everyone I’ve ever taken here has found something to love.
Dining in: Datiles, croquettas, queso de cabra con miel, ablondigas and chorizo frito are my go-​tos. The Dates are wrapped in bacon and the queso is served melted with honey on top. Sangria is phenomenal. If you sit at the bar during happy hour, it’s half priced.
Catering: Super reliable and a crowd favorite. I’ve ordered from them for my office happy hours on several occasions. They help me build the order so it’s appropriate for the size of my party and their delivery team does a great job of organizing and labeling all the food.

Great ambiance — it feels like I have travelled back to Spain and went into a cellar.
Great tapas — the garlic shrimps is a definite try, so is the bacon wrapped dates. The sangria is great — fruity with a good kick to it. Get the cheese/​meat board and you can sample their selection of meats. Definitely a great deal.
If you are looking for happy hour — it’s half off at the bar, and only for glasses — not pitcher.

I really, really want to like this place more.
I’ve taken my mom here. I’ve taken a couple of groups of friends here. I’ve been there on my own. I think I’ve given this place enough chances to rate it higher but I think 3 stars is deserving.
It’s like your staple nice décor, good vibes, popular tapas place in the city. The only negative and very important factor is that their food tends to be on the saltier side. The more one eats there the more one notices that.
I won’t say don’t go to Sala One Nine, I think you should go and build your own opinion. Maybe I’m just not into salt as much as you are!

Sometimes, the best restaurants are ones you find last minute, on a whim. Sala One Nine is a case in point — we were in a rush to find a place to eat before a midnight comedy showing. We found this place on Unilocal and showed up around 10:30pm on a Saturday night. The place was lively but not crowded, so we were seated right away. Even better was the speedy service; the server took our orders right away and then, BAM! the dishes started coming out without a break.
I highly recommend the shrimp in garlic oil and the egg truffle on bread. The shrimp comes to your table with the oil still sizzling in the bowl. The pulled pork appetizer was also very delicious; the bread was light and crispy.
I definitely want to go back to try other dishes and see its atmosphere during another time of day. If you’re looking for THE Spanish tapas or basque cuisine, Sala One Nine is the place to go.

Stopped by for late brunch/​lunch today after finding this place on Unilocal while in the area. The restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived so I was a bit wary at first, but I figured it was just because the brunch/​lunch rush was over. Despite the lack of people in the restaurant, we still had to wait to be seated which was kind of strange. I guess the host was preoccupied or something.
We got the prie fixe brunch, which included a drink, side, and entrée. I wasn’t in the mood for alcohol so I got a cup of tea, croquetas, or croquettes, for my side, and the paella scramble for my main. Loved the food! Croquetas were super rich and creamy and had me wanting more. They were essentially fried mashed potato balls (w/​ham) — sooo good. I really liked the paella scramble too. The chicken and rice were very moist and flavorful. Also loved the peas and artichoke (?) that were in it as well. It was a very hearty and filling portion — I found myself struggling to finish the last few bites because I was so full.
Service was just okay but the food is amazing enough for me to consider coming back.

This is my friend’s favorite tapas joint. Without sounding dismissive by saying something like «perfectly serviceable,» I’ll state that it’s a solid neighborhood joint that serves dependable traditional tapas at a *slightly* high price point. To be frank, when compared with the tapas standard bearers nearby, you’re looking at a place that is more expensive than El Quinto Pino (my absolute favorite tapas place in the city), Tia Pol, and a little less expensive than Txikito, which is sort of in a different realm anyway.
I will say this place gets a boost by giving four pieces per order, as opposed to the EXTREMELY annoying tendency to serve three pieces per group of four.
Albondingas — definitely the thing to hit up at this place. A slightly larger portion than the other dishes, with perfectly cooked meatballs in a slightly sweet, mostly savory gravy that is utterly made for swiping with MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF BREAD.
Pata Tumaca — Typical pata con tomate with the addition of serrano ham. Extremely small portion for $ 12. We’re talking about $ 3 per bite.
Dates — Bacon-​wrapped with an almond inside. Perfectly good little nibble.
Croquetas — Very well-​made, creamy croquettes, and probably the best bang for your tapas buck here. Possibly go with two orders.
Pulpo a la Brasa — This is the best dish we had — the octopus was PERFECTLY tender
If you’re going to go here, I suggest going for a snack rather than a meal, and going during happy hour, when wine/​beer/​sangria is half off. You’d do well ordering croquettes, albondingas, and octopus, and then going somewhere else later in the evening for a full meal (like, you know, tapas are supposed to do). A full range of tapas here is rather expensive, and for that, you’d be better off hopping to EQP or Tia Pol.

I’ve eaten here many times with friends and family over a period of several years. The food is spectacular. Last night was even better than I remembered. We ate early but by the time we left the place was filled. Very convivial atmosphere in a casual setting. Good wine selection You won’t be disappointed!

I just had my bday dinner here this past weekend and it was AMAZING!
I booked late for a party of 10 and they were still happy & able to accommodate us in such short notice.
we did the large group planned menu that was printed for us on our table upon arrival. Service was great throughout the entire experience, food was delish & sangria plentiful.
I cannot wait to go back, large party or date night

Had the worst dining experience here last Thursday when celebrating my friend’s birthday. Made reservation earlier that day for 6:30pm dinner. The back (quieter) session of the restaurant was almost empty when I got in. The manager gave us a table literally right next to the open kitchen with all the cooking fume and smell coming to us. I asked nicely if she can give me another table. She said the only other table was the table in the front session with the happy hour crowd, that’s kind of noisy for us to catch up and celebrate my friend’s bday. But she insisted on not giving us any of the empty table at the back, claiming that they were all reserved. However we saw the back session were half empty during the whole 3 hours we stayed there. I wonder was it because we’re Asians that she treated us differently? I saw her bringing other customers in and let them choose which seats they liked to sit at.
One of the waiter was very rude. We asked for hot water when he brought us ice water. He then brought us water no ice and when we told him we asked for hot water, he said «you asked for water no ice» with a very rude attitude and tone. And later on during dinner, we asked him to refill some hot water for us, he said to us «you have half cup of water, why you want more», Then while he’s filling up more hot water for us at the water machine next to our table, he said «the water is heavy»… We said to him politely that «you’re very rude to your customers». He replied, «I’m not rude, you have water, why you want more»…then he went on and on until I said «sorry, I don’t want to talk to you anymore».
We ordered the Paella at 7pm, the waitress told us it would take 35 minutes, but it came out at 8pm. It tasted very salty, the worst paella I’ve ever had.
The one star I’m giving is for the waitress. She’s such a nice and sweet lady. So we still tipped them 15% for the dinner.
I’ve been to many restaurants in NYC for the past 15 years, this one gave me the most horrible dining experience. Will never go back again!

Ambiance is great. Not so impressed with the service. Food was on the cold side despite it being off hours.

I came to this restaurant with my friend on a Sunday night. I found it on Unilocal.It wasn’t very crowded when we got there, which was nice because we were very hungry. It’s a beautiful place and a great spot for a date. We ordered a bottle of wine that was recommended by the server. She was very knowledgable about the menu and very attentive. The service here was outstanding. We ordered the cheese plate to share. It came with four different cheeses, a type of jelly, and salted nuts. It was great. We loved each type of cheese. We also shared the filet mignon toast. It had caramelized onions and the filet mignon on toasted pieces of bread. This was delicious. I just wish the filet mignon was cooked a little more rare. We also shared the grilled vegetable platter. It had tomatoes, asparagus, peppers, and carrots. The vegetables had a lot of flavor. Lastly, we ordered the croquettes. They were delicious and very creamy. Overall, the food and service here was great! We had a great experience and I can’t wait to return to try more of the menu!

Not a bad place but almost empty for brunch on a Saturday, In contrast, Boqueria just down the street was very busy.
I had a tortilla which was excellent. Server was professional. Food came out of the kitchen promptly. Background music was Latin pop/​rock.
I was looking for a Spanish restaurant for a possible cocktail party. I was disappointed with their gin selection — Tanqueray, Beefeater, Bombay Sapphire were the only choices. Tonic came out of a gun.
The space is configured with a wine bar in front, a full bar further back, open kitchen in the rear.

As with all tapas joints, I visited here with a group of friends so we were able to order a variety of dishes. The food was fresh and tasty. We liked the bacon wrapped dates, chorizo meatballs, and octopus dishes the most, as well as most everything else we ordered. The cava was okay, not great. Finally, the service was pretty good and the atmosphere was nice.
My biggest critique here is that this basically confirms the reason I dislike most tapas places in America, especially here in the city. The portion to cost ratio is insulting. It’s tapas, I get, the dishes aren’t big, I’ve been to Spain, I know. Fine, then don’t charge me $ 14 – 18 a dish. Also, I cook at home, a lot, and know how much the ingredients cost AND, more importantly, I’ve had tapas elsewhere in the city that charge fair prices.
In short good food, good service, they charge more than they should because they know they can.

When I walked in, there was something I didn’t love about the ambiance, but things quickly got better from there. So many things on the menu sounded great, but I opted for the lentil soup with chorizo, and monkfish. Monkfish was delicious. The tempranillo I drank was also great. I had plate envy — as all of the dishes around me looked great. Good service. I see other reviewers complaining about the noise, but I didn’t find the restaurant too noisy at all (and I’m sensitive to noise). I’d come back.

Great and delicate taste. Dishes are in small size. Great for cocktails, but not a big meal which can feed your hungry stomach. Alcohol has strong favor.

My friend and I shared the magret de pato tosta, plato fiambre espanol, and gambas al ajillo. Everything was done to perfection. The duck had just the right amount of fat and was very flavorful. There was a great arrangement of meats and cheese. And I can never have enough garlic or shrimp so I thought the shrimp was amazing. I definitely want to come back and try more tapas.
To drink, I had the red sangria, which was made how I like it: strong, without a soda substance watering it down. They make theirs with brandy. Nicely done.

MAKE A RESERVATION! Okay, got that out of the way.
So, the food is amazing here. Tapas, tapas, tapas, who doesn’t love tapas? And these tapas… are cooked to perfection. Really, no complaints about the food at all. However, it is just way tooooooo crowded in here.
We didn’t make a reservation, but the host told us to wait so he could see if there was anything available. Honestly, it would have been better if he just said that there wasn’t going to be anything available for the next hour. He did seat us within 20 minutes, but to our surprise 5 minutes after sitting down another table just randomly appeared behind us! Making the space even more cramped than it already was… My friend could barely move his seat back without hitting the people behind him.
Service was just way too fast paced, it was LLLOUDDDDD, they try to accommodate so many people that you can literally hear everyones conversations word for word so it’s hard to even have your own.
This is all based on the dinner scene… Not sure how it is during lunch. But really, if loud places where you can barely move isn’t your thing then this ISN’T your place. If you could care less and just like to eat then this IS your place :).

Came in for lunch.
Grilled calamari is a must try. Smoky and tender.
The croquetas are alright. Tastes like my childhood.
Fried chorizos were served thinly sliced.
Solid food and serve. Maybe a hair overpriced

3.5 stars… First let me say that the food here is wonderful and quite affordable. It’s top notch– even the vegetables with romesco were out of this world. But truly, service-​wise, the night was a cluster. The first couple of dishes came out right away (croquetas — the best I’ve ever had and the potatoes which were excellent)… Great– let’s have more… Then the next two came out like 15 minutes apart (for the record– calamari which was OK and the aforementioned vegetables). No one eats that slowly! And especially not two grown men.
Then they managed to totally forget our last dish (filet mignon on toast– worth the wait). They comped it and they were real apologetic but really the service here needs work.
On the plus side they have strong drinks– if not the best tasting. We may go back when it’s not as busy.

I came in on a Friday night after deciding not to wait for Burger & Lobster. We were seated immediately. The place was packed and I found myself having to scream over the noise as we discussed what to order.
⁴⁄₅ for Datiles (bacon wrapped dates): the bacon was thick and crispy. Saltiness and sweetness worked well together.
4.5÷5 for Croquetas: outside was perfectly crispy with a smooth rich center. Great contrast and definitely worth having again.
2.5÷5 for Chorizo Frito: not memorable at all. This dish had the most food out of all that we ordered but i would have gladly swapped this dish up for something else.
⁵⁄₅ for Flan: the dessert gave me chills! Smooth creamy gelatinous texture with just the right amount of rich sweetness. This is OMG good!

This place really made an impression on me. Very nice place to come with a group or with a special someone. I ordered the Ibiza Fizz which was very refreshing. We ordered a bunch of tapas from bacon and almond stuffed dates to ham croquettes to lamb kebobs with yogurt drizzled on top… I don’t believe there is anything on this menu that does not taste incredible. Every single thing we ordered was as good as the last and the taste was outstanding. Could have gone for another order of the bacon and almond stuffed dates because this could have satisfied anyone’s need for dessert. After 6 different tapas though, not a lot of room left for anything else. Will definitely be coming here with a group next time.

Came here randomly one night wanting to have tapas and so glad we did. We ordered the datiles, croquetas de jamon, patatas bravas, pulpo a la plancha, albondigas and pinchos morunos. Every time we got a plate we said theres no way the next plate is going to be as good as this one. Wrong. Every single thing we ordered exceeded our expectations. The datiles were sweet and salty and we were going to order them again but were too full by the end. The croquetas with jamon left us wondering how we can make them that good at home. The albondigas literally melted in your mouth. Ever since we left this place we have not stopped talking about it to our family and friends.

Really disappointed in my experience here. Came here with a friend and we were given two different menus. Didn’t realize it until I tried to order something off my menu and they didn’t have it.
Ordered the duck toast and the octopus to start. Both were bad. The duck toast was fatty and did not taste good. The octopus was overcooked and tasted burned. We had been planning on ordering more, but no one ever came to ask us, and this turned out to be a good thing. Can’t believe the octopus was $ 18. Total rip off. We went next door after these «apps» and got two lobster rolls at Burger and Lobster.
Skip this place.

We came here for a last minute gathering of 3 couples. When you first step in the wine you get is amazing. Cozy entrance with small tables and a bar. The inside gives you a feeling as if you are in the streets of Barcelona. The staff is extra nice and accommodating. Food is great simple and tasty.
The only reason this place is not a 5 star is because the food took a long time to arrive to the table.
Highly recommended for a couples night and a group night.

Great spot in Flatiron district! The vibe is vibrant and intimate. Great place for a date or a small group of friends. On Monday nights they do Flamenco nights and have great happy hour 4 – 7 pm.
We made ressies for a group of 6 and had no problem getting our table. Our server was attentive and knowledgable about the menu. The place is tapas style so be prepared to order and try a whole bunch of different items. They do have main dishes and paella, but i recommend sticking to the tapas. What’s great is that they have lots of options especially if you are not a meat eater.
We ordered the following: fried goat cheese balls (amazing), patatas Bravas (delicious), vegetable croquetas, tortilla española, pan con tomata, and ordered a fish for the table. Everything was great! Be prepared to order two orders of each because they are small.
Love the vibe and can’t forget the sangria!

This is where the Boqueria rejects go.
Seriously, that is the only reason I have ever dined here… the wait was just too long at Boqueria and my friend and I were hungry.
Now the ambiance, the live music, live flamenco, the décor, is so very Spanish. That deserves 5 stars.
But the food (and the wine) is just kinda good. Overly greasy, bland and unrefined. I may not be a tapas expert, but I have lived in Andalucia (Sevilla, specifically) for a period of time. I was spoiled eating fresh calamari in Malaga and Alumenar, amazing homemade tortillas, sopas de verduras, gazpacho and paella in Sevilla, pulpo and gambas in Cadiz…
First, the wine. This is a tapas restaurant. How do they not have interesting, rustic, earthy wines by the glass? I had tastes of 3 different types and SETTLED on one.
We ordered the patatas (not good, but I exempt them since I did the same for Boqueria. Olea has the BEST patatas bravas in the area), Gambas, octopus… The seafood was too oily and did not seem FRESH.
My real memory of eating here was, 1) UGH, I wish we could have been at Boqueria, this food is bland and their wine is bad, 2) At least I’m spending time with one of my best friends ever, 3) Ugh, this is embarrassing. I hate taking out-​of-​town friends to dinner when the food is just ok and unmemorable…
