Specialties
Saro is an Eastern European Balkan Bistro that celebrates the eclectic, seasonal cuisine, wines and spirits of countries such as Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Montenegro and more. The idea behind Saro is sharing that Eastern European warmth with New-Yorkers, offering a cuisine which is new by recreating the old. Chef and Owner Eran Elhalal often simply puts it as: «Comfort food you did not get to grow up eating».
History
Established in 2010.
Having grown up in his beloved Bosnian grandmother’s kitchen, it was her home cooking that inspired Eran to open a bistro that specializes in Balkan cuisine. The historic background of this eclectic cuisine comes from the two major occupations of eastern Europe which lasted until the break of World War One — The Ottoman empire which reigned south of the Danube river and the Austro-Hungarian empire which took hold of the countries north of the river.
Hence…combining his love for Balkan cuisine and the fascinating history and customs of the region, Eran opened Saro in honor of his Grandma Sara (Saro is her nickname) in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
