The Marcel At Gramercy Hotel

I’ve stayed here twice now. Both times were similar.
The outer wall is non-​insulated and about 8 inches thick. The noise of the city passes right through them so be ready for an 8am wake up call from a jackhammer. You know it’s going to be bad when the hotel puts ear plugs by the bed instead of a little mint.
The rooms look nice but are hit and miss. In my current room the shower drain has clogged and the AC unit just leaked a bunch of water into the carpet. It’s for the best; poor thing couldn’t keep up with the heat of a spring evening.
In other words it’s a one star hotel with really nice staff.

I originally left this place a 4 star review, but i had to come back and update to 5 stars. Would give 10 stars if i had the option. I left a pair of heels here during my stay, and i only realized a week later after unpacking my bags. I called the hotel to see if they had a lost or found, i was not hopeful. But they had my shoes!!! And they shipped them back to me! Their customer service is perfect! Other hotels need to take some lessons from them. Customer service from the hotel manager down to the bell boy were top notch. Thank you Marcel! Cant wait to come back.

Online this hotel looks like a cute little boutique hotel. In person I found it to be decorated nicely but that really is the only plus I can give it. When I checked in I was given a room on the 6^th floor. The hallways leading to the rooms are winding and not all floors are marked to tell which way to go. Very labyrinth like. Upon entering the room I felt like I was in a large closet. I didn’t immediately see a window but then noticed a skinny hallway that led to a closet and window. I couldn’t stay in a room where I can’t see the window so I requested another room and was given the handicap room on the 2^nd floor. This room was much larger and I noticed it had a nice window, although the window had a broken latch and couldn’t be locked and the window opened up to a construction deck. I noticed a coffee cup on the deck so I knew the deck was being used for something. I requested and received another room on the 2^nd floor next to the elevators. Although this room was too small to have a closet, refrigerator or a full length mirror it was an improvement over the other rooms offered and if it was the room given to me originally I would be writing a more favorable review. The two rooms offered previously were completely unacceptable and stressed me out! When I came down stairs in the morning to check out Andreas was behind the desk and couldn’t bother a smile or a hello. The door man though was very friendly and professional. I wouldn’t stay here again unless I was guaranteed one of the rooms shown on the website.

Here for one night on business. This hotel has everything you need and maybe a bit more. Yes, the rooms are small! It’s NYC. I was pretty busy and I wanted a clean room to get a good nights rest. The décor is nice, bright with a mix of animal prints. The bed was comfortable and the shower was great! I was on the second floor and while earplugs were provided I did not require them. The front desk staff was friendly and professional. I had booked a superior room and was upgraded at check in to a deluxe room, which was a lovely surprise. As far as the checklist of things I require in a hotel room: Clean-​yes, comfortable bed-​yes, good water pressure in shower-​yes (rainwater shower head a bonus) hairdryer-​yes, cable TV-​yes, in room wifi-​yes not free (I was provided an access code which didn’t work), wine glasses and opener –YES. Extras ironing board-​yes, safe-​yes, minibar-​yes, mini refrigerator– yes. The rate for the superior room was $ 189 for a Tuesday night. The location is at 24^th street and 3^rd. Note: I walked right by the hotel marking is on the carpet outside and on the window. It’s very easy to miss if you don’t know its at 201 24^th Street.

The smallest room I’ve ever stayed in! Second floor disaster the view was the back of the another building with generator going at full blast 24hrs. Two stars for the staff and the room was clean. The breakfast was a joke the coffee horrible, oh but the dinner menu was good, had the salmon that was delicious but not worth staying there ever again. There way better places to stay for this overpriced cubicle!

UPDATE: I was contacted privately by a manager at the Marcel asking me to remove my negative review. Are you serious? I will keep it up so everyone can read what a terrible time we had.
My husband and I made reservations for the Amsterdam in Times Square. About 15 minutes before check-​in, I received a phone call from the hotel telling me that they had overbooked the night before and that I had been transferred to the Marcel at Gramercy. Absolutely unacceptable. All of our plans and reservations were in Times Square, which is why we selected the Amsterdam. Had I wanted to stay in Gramercy Park, I would have selected the Marcel.
Upon arrival, we were «upgraded» to a king room facing the street. We had expected to have beautiful view of the city. Instead, we got an ugly view of some alley and a terrible view of street traffic and trash. We were also given complementary «breakfast» for both mornings. Croissants and fruit are hardly a breakfast. More like a snack to tide us over until we could get a proper meal. Definitely not worth the $ 12.95 they were charging other guests.
The absolute inconvenience of being moved was in the transportation we had to pay for. We now how to get ourselves from Gramercy Park to Times Square on OUR dime and then back again to our sad little room the size of a postage stamp. I wil say, that the room was clean.
Also, it’s 2016. Free wifi, particularly in a self proclaimed «4-​Star Property» should be included. But no. We were charged $ 10 per device for a 24 hour period.
I’m not sure who rates hotels, but this most certainly was not a 4 –Star property. I would not recommend staying at any of the properties owned by this management company for fear of being relocated to another part of town you have no interest in being in.

Definitely a great stay. I frequent hotels in the city often and this one tops them all. Service, cleanliness, and overall culture was amazing. Yea, the rooms are small, but that’s common in NYC. The bed was huge. I slept quite comfortably as Jonas (snowstorm) crept through NYC. Can’t wait to stay again.

Unable to accommodate a person with disabilities and refused to let me out of my reservation. If you have a disability do not stay at this hotel. Horrible people.

The staff and accommodations were all wonderful at the Marcel! As soon as we arrived we asked if we could get a room with two beds, as I was traveling with my brother. We had booked through Priceline and I was nervous we’d be docked for that, but the woman at the front desk was extremely accommodating! Our room was large for New York standards– the only problem was that we got a bit of noise at night from the street– but that’s what we get for being in the city that never sleeps!

This hotel is one of those «off the beaten path» type of hotels. Situated in Kip’s Bay/​Gramercy area… it’s only a 24 block walk to Manhattan. Bring good walking shoes if you opt to do this, though.
I prefer boutique hotels over the big name brand hotels. Why? It’s the experience… you get some good ones and some bad… but you don’t get that boring/​dull chain hotel type experience. What’s the point of travelling if you don’t experience the good and bad?
After a red eye flight, my crew and I headed straight to the Marcel to drop off our luggage. For some odd reason, we asked if there was a room available for us to do a super early check in and luckily… there was! We got so excited we get to freshen up and get situated before trekking the NYC streets.
Customer service is a rarity in many parts in NY… but not at the Marcel. The folks at the desk and hotel staff were amazing. Lobby was decorated beautifully and they made great use of every inch of the hotel.
Breakfast (not complimentary, but all you can devour) on the tenth floor has a lounge and open terrace. They offered pastries, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, fruits, juices and coffee. there is a attendant who will make you coffee. The toaster did not work initially, but they were able to fix the issue right away. Anywhoo, head up on the 10^th to get a view of the Empire State Building while the sun is rising.
Rooms were small, but expect that when you go to a big city where space is scarce. Our room was clean and comfortable. We really only used our room to shower and sleep.
Overall a great experience at this hotel. Will definitely stay again if available when I visit. A night’s stay was a bit pricey, but still more affordable than many hotels we’ve compared this hotel to.

Boutique hotel that is hard to notice as it’s not in an area where you think there would be a hotel. Very nice lobby area, with plenty of seats and a fireplace too. (I think it’s fake but it looks cool).
The staff here is friendly and polite. There’s a restaurant right on the corner and delis and stores are a block away. There is a rooftop breakfast as well for $ 13. It’s a Continental Breakfast.
The rooms can be small but they do have some decent sized ones. I’ve had corner rooms that have some room to move around. Flat screen TV, fridge with snacks and drinks. Overpriced of course but there if you want it. The furniture and décor in the rooms are all modern and new.

Great cozy hotel in the center of Manhattan, great location, close to everything, very nice restaurants around, and not too loud around. Service is great, rooms are clean, do not expect huge rooms, you are in Manhattan.

This place was nicely decorated (lobby and room), but it was TINY! I don’t know if that is supposed to give you that NY feel or what… Based on the room size and layout, it seems like perhaps this was a college dorm at some point.
There is a stocked mini-​fridge. Ear plugs are provided to block out noisy city life (although we actually didn’t use them). The desk is located right under the wall-​mounted TV with very little room between the foot of the bed and the desk chair. The bed seemed very small (length). I’m 5’8″ and i felt like I kept having to move my head all the way up to the headboard to ensure my toes weren’t dangling off the foot of the bed.
If you’re traveling with kiddos, they do have pack ‘n plays available. Although the room is tiny, there is just enough room in the corner to put it.
I will say that the best thing about this place is definitely the roof top terrace lounge. It has computer access and seating inside, fruit, a Keurig and a great view of the Empire State Building (especially at night!)

We stayed at the Marcel for 3 nights and couldn’t be happier! This boutique hotel has a unique style and it’s artsy décor really makes it a joy to come back to your room.
Cozy and very clean. The staff was very friendly and extremely attentive, hailing taxis for us when we it was raining and doing an impeccable job with cleaning our room every day. The bathroom was well equipped with all the amenities we could need. Really nice shampoo/​conditioner etc.
There Is also a nice lounge where you can get complimentary coffee and hang out.
The location was also perfect. Not too bustling so it was relatively easy to sleep at night!
Overall we were very pleased and would definitely come back!

Stayed here for a business trip and enjoyed it. The location is great, within walking distance of Gramercy Park, with the necessities (drugstore, coffee, bagels) right around the corner. The check in process was very smooth and the room was small, as most NYC rooms are. They provided blackout curtains and ear plugs (which I didn’t need, staying on the 6^th floor), as well as all the standard amenities. Would have liked to see a luggage stand, but otherwise the room was functional and comfortable. Bathroom was clean and well stocked. Just a note: the AC turns off when you leave the room, so to activate it you must leave your room key in its designated slot to keep it running.

The Marcel is a cozy little spot right in the heart of (or close to) Manhattan.
My first day here could have gone better. Our initial room reservation was not the room we had asked for. We even emailed 6 months in advance to make sure and they said all would be okay. The check in was quick but we were placed in a room far smaller than what we expected. The next morning we spoke with the front desk, showed them our email communications with them, and they happily moved us to the room we originally requested. That was the only real setback. Our new room was spacious, and had an amazing view of the Empire State!
The 10^th floor tea area has a beautiful view of Manhattan, especially during the winter holidays. The free wine in the evening that they do on certain days is always an awesome way to start a cold night in the city with your loved one. The front desk was always quick to send up any requests.
The location was great for us. It’s within blocks of all the main subways necessary to get around. It has liquor stores and convenience shops so you can purchase small items you may have forgotten.
Go during the holidays! It really was amazing! I would stay at the Marcel again.

A great little boutique hotel! Stayed early April 2015. Rooms clean and trendy, their doorman was super helpful and friendly (even ran to the corner to hail a cab for me when I was running late for a meeting). Great lounge on the 10^th floor, and they DO have room service. Location is excellent: Midtown Manhattan, close to Flatiron District and Union Square. Will for sure be staying here again!

This hotel is so well decorated — I really loved everything about the layout and the décor. What I didn’t enjoy was the lack of hot water in the shower and the paper thin walls that did nothing to keep sound in or out. The rooms were small, but not unreasonably so for a boutique hotel in Manhattan. Location was great — easy to find and surrounded by bars and restaurants. The in-​room Wifi wasn’t working (major letdown), but there was free Wifi available in the lounge on floor 10. Would definitely stay here again, especially for the price!

I stayed here for 4 nights because I got an amazing rate through Orbitz but it turned out to be a wonderful choice. The staff were super friendly and the lounge was a great place to drink coffee and relax. Location also can’t be beat. There were solid neighborhood options for eating and drinking and two subway stops were close by making it accessible to everything else in the city I wanted to do.
Only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that my room was tiny. For one person it was fine but when my fiancé came for the second half of the trip the room felt cramped. We could sleep in the room but it was too small to hang out. So our downtime when not sleeping had to be spent in the lounge. Not a deal breaker just something to keep in mind, especially if you need private space to recharge when out of town.

Adorable boutique hotel in Gramercy. Location is great for getting most anywhere — subway just a few blocks away. And there’s a great little convenience shop next door. Food offerings in the hotel not so great — skip it and go somewhere nearby, lots of great options!
Upon arrival our room as 79º in December — we adjusted the thermostat and then ran out to go about exploring NY. When we arrived back it was the same temp (hot!), maintenance came up and determined they could not fix the problem. So they offered fans and open windows since they were booked that night and said they would address the problem the next day. They did change out the thermostat — still no difference. They happily offered us a room change and discounted our room rate for sticking it out the first couple of nights. We very much appreciated the customer service.
Rooms were clean, well appointed and spacious for NY standards and I would absolutely recommend the Marcel.
