I would have liked this place if the lady didn’t call me up asking for larger tip. Extremely inappropriate. 15% is standerd get over it.

I came here Saturday night with my girlfriend, right before we went to the movies. We ordered some Ikura, Unagi, Spicy Crab, Vulcano and one Rainbow Roll. Everything was fresh and tasty. It’s not too big but it’s a very clean and pleasant place. Overall great sushi and great services. I’ll be back.

Big chunks of fish and avocado in each sushi roll left me full. Attentive service.

So, I’ll be straight up — this is one of my favoritest sushi spots in all of Manhattan. I’ve done the more expensive places. All of them. Like several times. That said, this is the place I go to for Everyday Sushi — for delivery or dine-in. It’s a small place(like most) with normal tables and chairs — only about 8 — 10 tables for four and a small(4 – 6 person) sushi bar, of course. That said, I’ve never had to wait to get a table(but, dang, they crank carryout orders out the door at an alarming rate). The service is always fast and attentive. There’s nothing outstanding about the atmosphere, it is what it is. It’s very clean, nice enough, lit enough, cool enough(never too hot like some places), and small enough to be quaint and personable. The great part is the sushi itself. Now, again, I travel a ton. I’ve had sushi in about every major city in the US but I’m not a sushi aficianado /expert /foodie /sushidie. This is the one place I’ve always had good to great sushi. The rolls aren’t tiny. The sushi is always fresh. The sashimi melts in your mouth — the hot stuff is hot and the cold stuff is cold(man lots of places get that part wrong). I’ve tried most of the rolls and specialties. My favorites are the tempura rolls, edamame, and green tea. There’s Salmon Tempura(my favoritest), Shrimp Tempura, Lobster Tempura, Sweet Potato Tempura, and Whitefish Tempura. California rolls are solid — even have the option for real crab for minimal cost upgrade. They don’t drown it all in crappy sauces. It’s fresh. It’s yummy. It’s what sushi is supposed to be. As for consistency, I’ve been here almost a dozen times in the past year. I’ve ordered carry-out(usually a 30 minute delivery time) about two dozen times in the past year. Always consistently good. Never ever had a bad experience. Great bet for a great sushi meal at a great value. Enjoy.

I was visiting my friend in NYC and she wanted to find a new sushi joint that served good, inexpensive sushi and rolls to replace her weekly sushi place that increased their prices. We happened to stop by Toyo and we loved it. We didn’t order any of the salmon or sushi, but their rolls were pretty inventive and tasty. We tried the crush, lover, shrimp tempura, and eel avocado. All of them were pretty good, but we loved the Crush Roll. I’d come back if I lived in the city.

I recently discovered my love for sushi and this place is the perfect way for me satisfy my craving. It’s a good price, close to my apartment, and really fresh. I’m vegetarian so I generally get the avocado-cucumber rolls, but I tried the sweet potato rolls here the other night and they were divine. They were a little crunchy, warm, and just perfect — definitely recommended.

Like most good Catholics, I abstain from meat on Fridays during Lent. However, like some others, I also occasionally use Fridays as an excuse to splurge on and indulge in sushi(not sure if that’s what was intended in the spirit of «sacrifice»)! So after hitting up Stations of the Cross, I encountered Toyo Sushi while headed back to the office. Small spot, decent prices — why not? Upon entering, I was told that my order would be ready to go in under five minutes — which ended up being only three and a half — nice! While I only did carry out, I noticed that Toyo is your standard, small sushi joint in terms of aesthetics. The place is appointed with bamboo accents and clean, modern décor(sans the clock with pieces of faux sushi standing in for each number — weird)! Ok, onto the food — it was decent. For $ 12, I would have preferred if my Rainbow Roll had real and not imitation crab. And I noticed a few pieces of avocado that looked past their prime. The fish itself was fresh and fantastic. My spicy tuna roll was also delicious, and the portions were good. The service seemed friendly and efficient while I was there. All in all, I’m glad I know about this spot since it’s close to my new office digs, but it wasn’t quite a sushi-gasm experience.

The portions here are nicely sized, and the fish very fresh — the basis of a good sushi joint. Nigiri are fresh and delicious, and maki(rolls) are inventive. Delivery service is very prompt, with good packaging. If, like us, you enjoy inventive and unusual sushi, with tasty standbys such as gyoza(dumplings), definitely don’t miss Toyo.

The sushi here is not bad, but pretty ordinary. Like a lot of economy-priced, non-Japanese owned sushi restaurants, Toyo is a big fan of the avocado. I think avocado is ok, but sometimes I just don’t like the slick fruit in my sushi. I scoured the menu for 2 non-avocado, non-fried(I don’t like tempura in my sushi either) sushi rolls, and was left with the Christmas roll & the yellowtail with jalapeño. The Christmas roll was good, fresh, and featured both red & green roe in addition to tuna & salmon. I was pleased with the hearty slices of jalapeño in the yellowtail roll, which gave it a nice kick. In addition to the rolls, we also ordered the oyako don(chicken & egg over rice), wasabi shumai, and cold tofu. The rice was alright though the chicken was a little dry and could have been more flavourful. The shumai had an interesting wasabi finish. The tofu was really good but I also think that it’s hard to mess this dish up. Overall, not bad for a regular sushi joint. I will probably order from here again at some point.

I think this place is underappreciated because there is a much more popular sushi place right across the street. However, the prices are a little less expensive and the sushi is really good. Service is friendly and I’ve been in there on more then one Friday night where my boyfriend and I have had the place virtually to ourselves.
