Ultra Sound Rehearsal Studio

This is hands down the best rehearsal studio you will find in Manhattan. I am saying this having an 11 piece band that needs a ton of assistance. I need chairs and different keyboards and amps and stools and tuning of the piano and music stands etc etc. I am probably a rehearsal studio’s most difficult customer. Have high expectations.
And when I ask for that tenth chair or that eleventh music stand, whoever is on their staff schedule will always make sure to be at their most accomodating and answer you in such friendly manner — it creates an environment for making music that ‘feels good’, has a good energy.
Sure, it’s an old building, but the equipment they have is fantastic. The rooms sound really on point, extremely compact sound and tight feel on the drums with all that padding on the walls.
I hope this place keeps going for a long time !

Great rooms and amps! Such a great deal for weekday walk ins. No judgments from the staff, either. Or at least not in front of me.

Not too thrilled about their equipment. They lock the PA once you start rehearsal which I think is absurd. Their room set up is awkward. But more than anything, the customer service… man they suck!
Been leaving them messages since Sunday to book a rehearsal space for Wednesday. In which I’ve already made a non-​refundable deposit for.
Word of advice: go to Modulus. They’re on the floor above and answered their phones faster, and even gave me a 10 percent discount.

Just had a rehearsal there and they were a well maintained, smooth running operation. DW kit was nice, though the cymbals were a little beat up) one of the crash cymbals was cracked). Bass rig was really top notch, and there were plenty of guitar amps to choose from. The staff was helpful, booking was easy and rates were reasonable. Will definitely rehearse there again.

I’m not an expert on rehearsal studios in the city, but I can say that Ultra Sound has always impressed me with its topnotch, well maintained equipment, clean and good sounding studios, and professional staff. U.S. is definitely superior to any of the several other studios I’ve rehearsed at in recent years. I really don’t know how some of these negative reviews got here — maybe these were written by the personnel at rival studios. At any rate, I felt compelled to check in with my thumbs up, and I think you’ll give them a thumbs up as well.

The guys and I get together to jam here and drink some beers and it’s always a good time. I usually go for the rooms that are in the $ 30/​hr range and they are great. The guitar guy loves the amps and I love the drums. we are talking DW kits here that sound pretty good with DW kick pedal. not bad.
I’ve only played at a couple of the studios in the city but this is by far the best deal.

Played here last night. Really had a great time. The guitarist loved the selection of amps and the drums were pretty spectacular. The heads were all in good condition, and in tune. I wasn’t crazy about the cymbals, although this is more a matter of preference. They however were in good condition and not cracked (unlike I’ve encountered at other studios in the past). It would have been better to have the PA unlocked to adjust more easily although I do understand their reasons. The room was spacious (I was in room D, which is one of their bigger rooms) and the price was pretty cheap for the equipment. One other thing was they only had cassette recording available. I felt this could be upgraded as I honestly don’t know many people who even own cassettes anymore.
Overall I very much recommend this place for a rehearsal (especially if you’re a drummer). Just maybe bring your own cymbals if you’re picky.

This place is great. $ 15 to go bang on some drums for an hour after work, and they have everything you need (sticks are $ 5)…can’t beat that. Sometimes the sound quality or the amps in various rooms aren’t the best, and the condition of the drum gear varies from room to room, but it sure beats renting your own space.

What happened to this place?
This used to be one of the premier studios, went there recently for a jam session. One of the cats in the group is a recording engineer known to be a stickler. He called in advance three separate times to make sure the amps would be able to accommodate him.
He was willing to bring his own amp but was assured the amps in room 5 were all working. Sure enough when we got there there were three amps in the room with broken channel switchers.
With 9 guitar amps in the room the guitarists were, at first, forced to play two amps that were right on top of each other.
The drums sounded like crap, the amps were all tired with the exception of the bass amp which sounded stellar.
After wrestling with the amps the «sound man» left the PA untouched.
They lock up their PA. Their procedure for setting up the PA is to have you sing before anything else. It always needs to be louder once the instruments kick in. This place left me embarrassed after proclaiming them as «one of the best in town». The sound in the room was not «cohesive». The band/​mics face away from the drummer as if you were performing on a stage. A better way is to have people facing each other in a circle, better for communication. Skip room 5.
Ultra Sound is no longer worth the money, unless you’re the bass player.

THE PERFECT PLACE TO REHEARSE WHEN YOU OWN HEAVY GEAR
I love rehearsing at Ultra Sound. Their practice studios are loaded with amps, keyboards (Tritons, Motifs, Rolands), and drum sets so you don’t have to haul as much stuff around when all you want to do is rehearse.
I would’ve given this place 5 stars, but I had to put in a 1 star deduction for certain members of the staff who can take a while to help you adjust your PA (they keep it locked) and for how strict they can be with the time (especially considering you lose 10 minutes waiting for the preceding band to pack up and leave). Still a great place to rehearse though!
