Stopped in here for lunch during the week and was pleasantly surprised at all aspects of the experience. A half order of the roasted pork chunks with rice and beans was a generous portion of delicious food. Quick service and great espresso. Very reasonable prices too! CASHONLY!

Definitely get value for your money, but quality of food is just average. Ordered the beef cubes, beef ribs and chicken. The chicken was the best; meat was tender and flavorful. I thought the beef cubes were dry and the beef ribs were overcooked. Also had fried bananas, which were yummy and a steal at a dollar each. Total bill came out to be just over $ 30 for three people and there was enough left over to feed three more of us. I liken this this place to great food cart food served in a diner setting with good service. Bring cash.

I am really not sure what the big deal is. I love BBQ. I have eaten BBQ all of the US. In fact, I will go out of my way to eat BBQ. I also love Portuguese and Spanish food. Everything about my meal was average. The sausage appetizer was bland. The ribs and chicken were ok. They were not 4 or 5 star. The price point is extremely reasonable.

McWhorter BBQ is the reason I visit Newark. This local favorite is known for its tradition Portuguese chicken, marinated and grilled on an exposed, indoor, rotating, charcoal rotisserie that’s manually spun by a person. There are few delights that rival the chicken’s moist flavourful meat and browned crispy skin. For just $ 7, you will get super sized portions that will leave you satisfied and looking forward to your next visit.

The food here is freaking amazing. I love this place I just hate having to look for parking. Everyone doubles park that’s how bad parking is. But overall I recommend this restaurant.

Was in the Newark area(not my favorite place to be) and every time I’m in the area I have to get Portuguese BBQ. Delicious, large amounts of food at cheap prices. McWhorter’s did not disappoint. As usual, I ordered the chicken and ribs combo with rice and fries for $ 12. I took it to go, in its carryout tray. This meal usually feeds me for at least 4 servings and I can eat. These are 4 large servings. The food was good and tasty. I’ve now tried a few different Portuguese BBQs in the area and they’re very similar. Its hard to say one is better than the other. But I can say that McWhorter is on par with the rest of the Portuguese BBQs in the area. McWhorter is a short walk from Newark Penn station. The area doesn’t seem too bad, during the day, but at night that may be a different story.

The food was great and the price was even better. The service was quick an friendly. It was cool being able to see how they cook the meat. It’s a family friendly place we’re your not feeling like you have to constantly hush your child. The portions are huge we brought some home. For me, my husband we got two plates and fed our kids and had some left to take home. Along with drinks and bread and butter. All for $ 16 We will definitely make this a regular place

This place NEVER disappoints! The food is always amazing and the atmosphere is great. It’s a family friendly environment and you always feel safe on account of the cops always stopping by to eat here. My favorite place to eat in newark hands down.

This place bomb. Really cheap, really good. You can get food for a family of four for like, $ 11! That’s ridiculous. Whole roasted chicken, rice, and even their unsalted French fries are ridiculously good. I would say upgrade to the chicken plus the bbq pork ribs, which are juicy and so flavorful. You will not leave this place hungry. The service is decent, and it’s always packed. Watching the guy whose only job is to turn the roasting chicken wheel over and over is also entertaining.

We wanted to go out to eat on Valentine’s day, but didnt have a ton of extra cash. A co-worker had told me to check out this BBQ place a few months back, saying it was close to where I live, and not too expensive. I didnt have any experience with South American BBQ(I think that is what the type of BBQ here is considered), so I went in blindly to see what all the hype was about. We decided to go for lunch on a Saturday, and the place was jumping! The lighting was rather dim for my liking. The TVs all had the soccer game on, and you could see where they were BBQing all of the meat. We ended up getting the BBQ chicken, chicken and ribs combo, and fried banana. Let me start by saying that we could have only ordered one dish and had plenty to eat! The portions were very generous. We ended up taking home the leftovers, eating it for dinner, and still had more left! We only paid 20 dollars for what ended up being enough food to feed two people TWICE! The food was also very good! The meat was full of flavor and not dry. The dishes both came with fries and pickled veggies, which was good to balance the meat. The banana was sweet and delicious. Overall, I was pleased with the meal, as well as the price and service. I would recommend it, especially of you like to eat a lot. You will for sure get your money’s worth here!

Quantity not quality — large portions for a great price but no flavor… So what’s better? Eating good food or eating a lot of food? I choose quality any day.

For the amount of food you get for the amount you pay… this place is a bargain. Would definitely come here again. FYI — the place is cash only so be sure to bring cash. However, there is an ATM near the entrance that charges an arm and leg in fees.

a poor student’s dream… cheap, huge portions, delicious. I personally have some aversion to meat on the bone so I avoid bbq joints for the most part, but this place is an exception. the chicken is sooo juicy and tender with a unique marinade, the yellow rice is scrumptious, and how can you not love a mountain of shoestring fries? the plate also comes with pickled veggies, which i personally love(salty food fiend over here). their hot sauce is soooo good. be sure to pour all of that spicy goodness to drown every inch of your plate. –1 star bc the parking makes me want to rip all my hair out. in fact, just thinking about the parking keeps me from leaving my apartment to go eat here most of the time. there’s no lot, only street parking on a very busy part of the ironbound. there have been times where i circled for 20 mins so just be warned… that being said, although the service is lightning fast I would probably recommend this place for takeout over dine in because of parking.

It’s like a quest to get here. Drive past all the run-down graffiti buildings and over the rail road tracks. Then pass the bums and gangsters without getting shot. Try your best to find street parking and don’t slip on any ice in the winter. Then again, this probably describes most of Newark. Once inside, you’ll have to wait, and wait for a table. Newark isn’t known for BBQ, but they’ve got very good and affordable food for sure. The fire pit is in the middle of the room and the pit master is grilling up fresh chicken and ribs every thirty minutes. We had the salad, chicken, ribs, and fried banana. It comes with French fries. It was way more food than five people can eat. You’ve probably already heard that it’s cash only, no plastic. I think the bright side is that they allow you to bring your own beer or wine.

My company orders take out from here consistently every couple of months even though we’re located in Clifton. I’ve never seen the place, sat down or experienced their service so my review is based solely on the food. And the food is frickin’ awesome. I’ve only had their ribs, chicken, rice, french fries and vegetables. Everything is delicious, flavorful and consistent. Never had an off day from them or a messed up order. I took off 1 star because their food is a little too salty for my taste. I still love it but after eating it I need to down a bottle of water immediately. Their vegetables are pickled and kind of spicy so this is probably why.

My affair with Mcwhorter BBQ started like a year back and since we have been going strong and steady. This place is my goto place for authentic Portuguese food. It is located conveniently few blocks from the train station. The menu is not huge but has all almost all the staple Portuguese fare. I have tried a number of things here but my favorite is BBQ chicken which is made right in front of your eyes. So fresh, tender and is absolutely delicious. One can opt for half chicken which comes for $ 6 bucks and gets you a side of rice, beans and fries. Trust me the portion are really big, if one can finish it they will fill up their with a lot of tasty food. They serve complimentary bread with butter before serving food which is nice. The servers are really attentive. Overall an awesome Portuguese joint in my book. FYI– It is cash only!
