Went in on a whim while staying the night for a doctors appmt at Stanford. Bar wasn’t unique in any way and I didn’t notice anything German about the place that other reviewers have commented on. Bartender was not friendly and seemed angry every time we ordered the $ 1PBR pints. Pints were cold and smooth, though. Just an FYI, jukebox does not give you 4 plays for $ 1.

Heck yea this place is one rad dive bar and restaurant. They have great sandwiches and bar type food. The service is awesome! Carol rocks! And you can’t beat the happy hour deals 6−10pm — $ 1PBR on Wednesday, $ 2 well drinks on Thursday, $ 3 select shots on Friday. Juke box. Pool table. Fun spot! Definitely recommend this place.

I stopped in to have a late lunch and a beer on a recommendation from a co-worker. The people were very friendly and the food was very good. The building is a throw back to a time when establishments were well built. This place reminds me of some halls in Europe. I definately would recommend stopping in or booking an event for Swiss Park.

$ 7 half pitchers of Sierra Nevada and $ 1PBR Wednesday. Very friendly barmaid playing dice with regulars at the bar. Not too many laid back dives like this anymore.

The bartender is not a very happy person. Came here for a couple of drinks and always snapped at the most common drinks. Did not know how to make a long island or what beer she had on tap. Music is outdated in the jukebox. Mostly what the bartender prefers… when asked she walks away.

This was such a cute little bar! I’ve never been to Germany… or for that matter, any other part of Europe, but I felt like if I went there, this is kind of bar I would come across. We went here to watch Game 5 on a Sunday evening and there was an empty-looking bar with older people on the other side waltzing/dancing. It was funny because we couldn’t get into BJs for another hour so this is where we came and it was reallyyyy loud(not from the Dubs fans but from the loud waltzing music). this place is nice for a hangout and if you want to come here for dinner and dance… kind of an old-fashioned pub but I still find it very cute. This old German man came up to me and asked me if I spoke Dutch. I think. He was speaking in that language. It was pretty funny because he just asked me and I am no-where near Caucasian. lol. He then proceeded to ask us to watch his drink in English and told us not to drink it.

Literally the worst service I’ve ever experienced. Waitress/bar tender was drinking and eating while«working», did not come to take our order for 45 minutes even though the place was half empty, came to our table after we had finished and ate off our plates. I’m not kidding.

Crusty dive bar with a hall attached. They play bingo in the hall on Monday nights. As long as you can get past the smell of a dirty toilet and old people farts, they you can have fun, especially if you win. Sit by the door or a window if you can.

I will never visit this place ever again. The bartender on Tuesday nights is very slow which at times I could deal with but when she is rude and talks behind your back after making a simple request that’s where I draw the line. If she didn’t get the hint with the zero tip I left her maybe her and the owner should read this post. Most of the time when I have gone there I have ordered the $ 12 steak dinner and spend $ 20 — $ 30 in drinks. They will never see anymore of my money ever again!!!

Like a ski lodge from thirty years ago, with one dependable pool table and the German beer Bitburger always on the cheap. Behind the mysterious«don’t enter» door is a ballroom for rental space, line dancing classes. Diamonds in the ruff: Interesting looking chicks, also some skanks, some odd braniac chicks, some old floozies… oh forget the girls, try the french fries off the menu. They’re the fat ones, nice and potato-y inside. #funtimes

I really want to like this place, but a couple aspects seem to really hold it back. First off, the middle aged dirty blonde female bartender is not very efficient or attentive. I am not a demanding customer at all, but when it takes well over twenty minutes to get a drink, well… too bad, because I was going to order some food from the kitchen. What was coming out of there looked good, and the chef seemed very concerned about making sure that people liked the food. Also, there was a guy sitting near me spouting obscenities and ranting in a very loud voice about some very conservative viewpoints on things about which he knew nothing about. I understand that this is more of a working-class kind of place– and that sort of no-nonsense approach is part of its charm– but this guy made me feel uncomfortable. Which is all too bad, because this is a unique place with a long history and rustic charm. But I MUST say that the bartender holds this place back, and I think it’s sad that people get better service at the BJ’s next door or the Red Robin down the street.

The city of Newark put on their first ever Oktoberfest at Swiss Park this afternoon from noon to five in the outdoor park area(although the Swiss Club has been having them here for many years inside during the evening). Not having it in the banquet hall took a lot away from the Oktoberfest feel, making it more like a picnic, though the weather was perfect; warm and comfortable under the shade. General admission was five dollars, but twenty also got you a commemorative mug filled with beer. A three piece band played German and American tunes, some lively enough to get a few folks up and dancing. Bratwurst, hot dogs and giant sized pretzels were the bill of fare. The generic tasting bratwurst was not too savory, and I would of liked to have some butter for my dry pretzel. Ketchup and mustard were the only condiment choices. A raffle, local vendors, kids play area and car exhibition added to the merriment. But beer was the main event, and was most everyone’s reason for being there. Plenty of security was present just in case. I’d estimate around 120 people were attending at any given moment. I wonder if this will make it as an annual event.

The blond female bartender wasn’t rude but not very friendly. I guess this was because I am not a regular customer(first visit). So minus one star for that. I ordered with the bartender(per a sign) and she brought my food order to the chef. She brought my beer and soon after he delivered my food. I had the grilled cheeses with red onions and a side salad. The beer was ok. Next time I will go with a bottled one that I know instead of the Licher. Now the food was fantastic. I loved that the salad had a lovely presentation that included lettuce, chopped tomato, onion, beets, and garbanzo beans. Now I know to ask for no beets. The dressing came on the side in a little cup without asking(also awesome). I introduced myself to the chef and he is very friendly. Definitely will be back with my bf for more of his beautiful and tasty dishes. FYI …He said his dinner specials change based on fresh items(today included salmon).

Planned on going to BJ’s for happy hour, but we missed it and it was crowded there so we decided to try out Swiss Park. This place has been here forever, but I had never been inside before this. admit, at first glance when we walked in the door, I was ready to turn around and leave. It definitely seems more dive bar than restaurant. The kitchen is very clean and the food was surprisingly very good. Nice bartender and cook, not crowded at all.

Just like I remembered it, but better. Mouth watering, fall off the bone ribs, nice portions and $ 4 draft beers. If you’re looking for a casual hangout with a bit of nostalgia, a cold draft and some great food, It doesn’t get any better than this!

Not a lot of people know about this park that is hidden off Mowry. Great place to have a little together or party. There is a restaurant/bar in the area as well.

A local dive for the most part but it is first and foremost a huge old school gathering hall, actually originally built by Swiss ex-pats(check out the design on the exterior). The bar area with food in the evening is kept open weekly to bring in cash flow in between events(solid business decision). And for me it’s a perfect fit. A low-key dive where I can slip into a decent drank(or 2?) and grub on some decent food. They just recently brought in a legit kitchen staff to execute what I would describe as properly made diner food. Nothing fancy but really solid. A $ 12 steak with accompaniments and a truck stop salad with garbanzos, kidney beans and sliced beets, how old school is that?! I’ve also had nightly specials like a smoked pork chop and a tri-tip plate and all were money as I sipped on greyhounds or scotch n sodas. My little laid-back sanctuary. Just hope they can economically keep producing this level of good grub.

Hey Unilocalers! I needed to send a quick message about my favorite dive in Newark. Irecently moved from Dwntwn SJ and was completely bummed to lose my favorite dark walk to dives. I saw swiss park numerous times while heading to BJ’s, which is always way to crowded, noisey and to much of a «pick up» joint. I wandered one night to SwissPark, low and behold I was in awe… How to describe. it’s comfy like that old couch in the garage that’s kinda itchy that you can’t seem to bring yourself to toss. You know, smells funny, reminds you of grandma and is covered in cat hair,.though you have never owned a cat. Never too crowded… you must have a thick skin to enter… beer served with a side of «make you feel like an asshole»…but I love her. she captivcated me immediately… and I can’t stay away. Especially when Carol works the bar. She is a doll. Other than that, we rented the hall one night for a huge bday party and the staff made sure we were more than taken care of and that a good time would be had by all… Ahhh, SwissPark…“she smells like ass! But then again so do all my girls”…see you tonight sugartits!
