Vercingetorix Winery(pronounced«vûr-sin-jet-u-riks») or VX for short is named after a Gallic hero who became chieftain under the threat of Roman invasion. He took up a policy against the Romans which preserved only the precious vineyards of Burgundy and is honored to this day by local Burgundians for his bravery and the preservation of the noble Pinot Noir grape of Burgundy. This quaint family owned winery dedicates not only their name but their wine making philosophy to this by producing small lot Burgundian style Pinot Noir. The tasting room is in an old converted garage right across from the family’s home. It’s tucked far back into the property and away from the road which defines the saying«off the beaten path». The property is quite large totaling over 200 acres but the vineyards make up less than 10% of that. Along with wine they sell infused oils and hazelnuts which are grown on the property. I finally got a chance to meet the owners after speaking with them on the phone earlier this year. They were very welcoming and hospitable; there wasn’t an ounce of pretension in the air. Inside there’s a small wooden bar while used wine barrels and chairs make up the rest of the space. For groups they serve cheeses and salami with your wine. The tasting consists of 5 wines a Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and three different vintages of Pinot Noir one of which is a Reserve. I really enjoyed their 2009 Pinot Blanc which is quickly becoming one of my favorite white varietals. I was surprised to hear it’s produced in an off-dry style, meaning it retains some residual sugar. This obviously led to the wonderful fruit quality which initially made me question it being 100% Pinot Blanc. Its body felt rounder with more weight which allowed the fruits to linger in your mouth. Right up front there were flavors of green pear, nectarines and orange peel while it finished with lemon zest, a bottle was definitely coming home with me. The Pinot were all different and produced in a lighter more approachable style. I actually liked the 2008 non-reserve best as I felt its structure was the most refined for its age. Regardless of what wine appeals to your mouth your wallet will leave happy as all were very affordable! I don’t think one bottle was priced more than $ 25. I will certainly be returning to this secret wine hideaway and more than likely it will be for one of their summer events called Paella and Pinot in the Vineyard. If you’re looking for a more intimate or casual wine tasting experience I recommend you doing the same.
