Tom is amazing! He repaired a pair of sunglasses that my dog had chewed the morning I was leaving for vacation. He was incredibly nice, fast and wouldn’t let me pay him for his work. I will forever patronize his shop!

I can’t say enough good things about Tom and Market Square Optical. I got lenses from him the whole time I lived in Newburyport, and continued to get them when I moved to New Mexico. I was just in town and needed to get an emergency pair of glasses, and as usual, Tom was fantastic!

Just going to reiterate how much I appreciate Market Square Optical. I’ve gotten 3 or 4 frames here and have always walked away completely satisfied. Even got some warranty work done on some lenses that was fast and free.

+: great customer service, WIDE up to date and high end brand name frames without having to drive into boston! Btw: GREAt quality of lens!!! So cleans/​wipes without smudging or leaving behind fingerprints…

I have been to this place before browsing, but hadn’t bought anything yet. I have always thought they had the best selection around. Personally I like designer frames, and lots of color and shapes selection (in plastic frames). I finally went over the weekend to get new pair of glasses. For such a small store, I had 3 people waiting on me, asking me if I needed help, picking out frames they thought I would like based on the description I gave them of what I was looking for. I browsed many styles, finally the owner placed a pair of black and pink Etnia Barcelona’s on the table. I immediately thought, «ehh, probably would never actually buy those, but might as well try them on for giggles.» Once I tried them, I kept trying them on and going back to them. I ended up buying them. I liked that the owner thought of something different and suggested it for me. I’m very happy with the quick and easy customer service, great pricing, and overall good business over there. I highly recommend this place! Will most likely buy another pair from them in the future. I’ve been using Tom for over 20 years. Agree w/​all comments that his customer service is outstanding and his ability to pick the right frame is spot on. Occasionally he has had assistant optometrists who are not so great at service or picking out frames. However, the one who works there now, Lisa (?), is terrific. I usually go on Mondays — best bet to get waited on by Tom.

Market Square Optical is the premier optical shop to visit for quality and affordable glasses or lens. There is no other place like it for quality and superior service even after purchasing glasses. I have been a long time customer of this store and will continue as long as they are in business. I have driven hours to get to the store to have my lens replaced, new frames purchased, or simply have my frames adjusted.
Tom Collins, the owner, cares about you as the customer. He takes the time to listen and help in every way possible so that you have a wonderful experience at every visit.
You can’t find the service and care that Tom presents from any of the other local optical shops. It doesn’t matter the cost of the glasses or lens, Tom is there for every customer or potential customer.
I highly recommend you visiting the shop, whether to browse, get your glasses adjusted, or to purchase new glasses. Market Square Optical has competitive prices, many of the top major brands, but certainly affordable prices for all. Bring your insurance information also so you can apply your insurance discount.

I just got a new set of frames and prescription sunglasses from this shop. The experience was top notch from start to finish.
The gentleman who helped me (based on the previous review, I’m assuming he’s Tom) was very helpful but didn’t hover or pressure. He occasionally would just come over, maybe bring a set of frames with him based on the style I had been looking at, give some input here and there but give me breathing room and let me take my time.
He was also very good at juggling multiple customers as well.
The selection also was great. I’m very bad at choosing new «looks» and despite this I was able to find 3 – 4 different frames that all were viable for what I was looking for.
I’d *highly* recommend this shop and I most certainly will be coming back!

There isn’t much I can say that the others haven’t already written. Tom is amazing and when I go in I now, just select the frames he «assigns» as they are always the ones that look best and meet my requirements. Since I have a very strong prescription, I cannot see how I look anyway and trusting Tom has never disappointed me. His prices are always reasonable and lower than anywhere else. The quality of the lenses or they way he has the prescription put in is superior. With my newest progressives I am seeing as if it is my eyes adjusting. Even sliding down in bed at night I can still see the TV. So, nicest owner and staff, great selection, great prices and customer service beyond imagining, I will never go anywhere else. I too have brought referrals to Market Sq. They are the BEST!!!

I hardly ever write reviews, but Tom at Market Square Optical is a local treasure. You laugh? Well, let me tell you. After almost 20 years of trying various places on the North Shore, I stumbled into his shop and will never go elsewhere. The selection is top-​notch, as is the service.
Prices? You won’t do any better around here, especially when you take into consideration the absolutely fantastic personal service. For example, I never knew that lenses are usually guaranteed and can be replaced free of charge within a certain time period, no matter what the issue. Thanks for telling me this, Tom! He has even arranged (also free of charge) for a set of frames to be replaced after 2 years when the manufacturer re-​engineered them to eliminate a troublesome problem with the nose pads. And that wasn’t even why I was at the store that day. He just noticed the frames and offered. I doubt that many other places would’ve done this. Service, service, service. You can’t beat it.
The selection is fantastic, nothing cheap like you see at other stores. All the newest styles and very high quality. The sunglasses are fantastic and my prescription sunglasses were very reasonable when purchased at the same time as my new glasses. If you’re the sort who likes a lot of attention when shopping for frames, Tom is also very good at knowing what frames will look best on you, so you never feel overwhelmed.
I’ve personally brought 3 family members to Market Square Optical, and their experiences have been identical to mine. I’m happy to be able to spread the word. My only suggestion is to try and visit on a weekday. Lots of others know a good thing when they see it, so Saturdays can get very busy. However, if you must visit on a Saturday, rest assured that the shop is run so well, and with such grace and civility, that you will never be disappointed.

I was a sophomore in high school when it happened. Despite having a seat in the front row of the classroom I had to squint to see the chalkboard. After two weeks of watching me strain my eyes to see 6 feet in front of me, my algebra teacher asked me if I needed glasses. I knew I did but I was just putting off the inevitable so, within a couple of days, I had an eye exam and a visit scheduled with Tom Collins at Market Square Optical. This was over 20 years ago and he had just taken over the business but he made an awkward 15 year old feel comfortable about what was an otherwise dreadful event in his life– getting his first pair of glasses.
There are a few things that separate Tom and Market Square Optical apart from any other optical shoppe.
First, he cares. Every few years I have gone in with the goal of finding something cool and stylish that doesn’t look like I’m trying too hard to be cool and stylish. I have almost always failed at finding a frame that meets these criteria. While Tom is in his workshop carving out lenses or performing a complimentary repair, I will try on 6,7,8 different styles that just miss. Then, just as I’m at a point of peak frustration, he strolls out whilst wiping the lenses of a pair hidden by that same cloth.
«Here. Try these», he’ll say as he places the frames on my face.
Perfect! They fit my face as if they were custom made for me, the color goes well with my skin tone (hey, this stuff matters and you’re lying to yourself if you say otherwise) and they look and feel fantastic– in fact, cool and stylish as hoped for.
Second, he carries the best of the best. Maui Jim, Oakley, Oliver Peoples, Prada, Bolle, Lindberg, to name a few.
Third, his prices are amazing. Compared to Pearle Vision, For Eyes, any place in the mall, the guy up the street, etc., he blows them away. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t have franchise fees or an exorbitant rent to build into the prices but I know people who have paid over 200 dollars more than I for an inferior pair of glasses.
I moved to San Francisco a few years back and have searched for a West Coast Tom Collins to no avail. This guy is truly one-​of-​a-​kind and I will absolutely be taking a trip to Market Square Optical then next time I go back East.

I drive an hour to get my glasses here. Crazy? Yes. Worth it? Yes. The owner is a guy named Tom Collins (for real) and he has never steered me wrong.
I walk in, I tell him I want a change — something funky — he immediately picks me out frames. Voila — they are amazing. Every time. I get so many compliments on my frames that I would never have picked out for myself. And, if you don’t love them after a couple of weeks… bring ‘em back — no problem. Go see Tom. But not when I’m there — I need his full attention.
