Shilo Inn Suites Oceanfront Hotel Newport

Worst hotel ever. No ventilation. No drinking glasses. Huge block of ice in refrigerator causing it to run non-​stop. Crappy towels. Old, tube style, constantly buzzing TV. Billing errors. Never coming back.

Our family chose this hotel on a whim as it was oceanfront. The view I will say is gorgeous and the only reason why I would give two stars. The stairs give access to down right to the ocean. The room was completely questionable and with a kid nerve-​wracking. We were on the 2^nd floor so windows with no screen whatsoever made it sketchy to open a window which is a bummer. Also when we walked into the renovated room there was huge chunks that looked chewed out of the furniture. A lamp sat on a table that was filthier, than any one I have ever found at a goodwill or yard sale let alone a hotel. The bed was alright but a wierd amount of not enough pillows and the towel rack was broken just hanging there. We went to use the pool which was warm but it seemed the hotel ran out of towels which seems inexcusable.
For 160 bucks you should be comfortable and have what you need in a clean room this place falls a bit short.

My husband and I and our three boys stayed here this last weekend. We chose this hotel because the price seemed fair (we booked online) and it was right on the beach. The view was gorgeous all day long, and it literally took two minutes to get into the ocean, so it was fun for the kids.
It took us about 45 minute to check in because there was only one person behind the counter on a Friday evening in June. It took about 30 minutes to check out because one person was behind the counter and five other staff members were waking in and out of the office, not making eye contact, smiling at guests, or even helping to answer phones. The one person behind the counter answered three hone calls and helped three people in line alone.
My husband had a wireless charger for his cell phone, which is not like a regular charging cord. It’s a small disk about the size of a salad plate (NOT easy to miss) that was sitting next to the bed. We left for breakfast and came back. Housekeeping had already come and left, and the charger was gone. We looked everywhere, thinking maybe it had got out into our bags. We called the front desk to inquire, asking if maybe it got wrapped up in a towel or something. They took our info, but by the end of our stay, they never found it. When we checked out, we asked about it again. The lady at the counter was a bit rude, she didn’t apologize or anything about it (not that it was her fault, but still, there was a lack of customer care there).
I hate to be accusatory and we gave the benefit of the doubt, but it was obvious the charger was stolen by whomever cleaned our room. I’m not surprised, either, because the housekeeping staff were all wearing dirty clothes, constantly outside smoking in the parking lot, and a few of them were smoking marijuana on the balcony (I’m not sure if they were working but they were in uniform still. I don’t have a problem with it, but it was in front of my kids, which I think is inappropriate). They were completely unprofessional. Our room was «clean ish», or clean enough to not complain, but the building, elevator, parking lot, lobby, etc were NOT clean. The hotel looks run down.
I won’t stay here again. The ONLY reason I’m giving it two stars is because of the convenience of being ocean side and the pretty view. This was NOT worth the money.

Beds are awful. Hotel is dirty. Wifi is pitiful. The only thing nice about this hotel was the view, which is common around other hotels in the area. We had to move rooms 2 times in order to find a somewhat acceptable bed. People were nice and tried to accommodate us. However the hotel needs updates. Will never stay again. Would not recommend.

Horrible experience and incredibly disappointed with customer service. I had unfortunately left some clothing behind and promptly called to have them found and shipped to me. Was told they were found and gave my information to pay for shipping. After a week I hadn’t heard anymore so I called back. Nobody seemed to know anything about the missing items or had any information from me. They again went to look for my items and told me they would call back. Never heard back. I called a few days later and again they needed a description of my items and told me they would call me back. Again, no returned call. This went on for 3 weeks. Finally someone said again they found my items and they were taken to shipping and they would call me to give me tracking information. Nobody called back. I called again and this time they told me my items were never found to begin with. Very sad to not only lose my items but to have spent the past month being given the run around and being given such dishonest information. I recommend You don’t stay here.

We were on a road trip and saw this place. Customer service was fine and we checked in. When we got to our room, it did not feel clean and had a bad smell. We asked if we could change rooms because it had a bad smell. She gave us a room couple doors down. As we were leaving the lobby area, the woman was talking to the other woman working there telling her, «it is what it is.» Not very reassuring words. Sure enough, the room was just as bad. We opted not to stay at this place.

Who ever runs this joint should quit. No shampoo. No toothpaste. No clean towels. The only towel looked like it was being used to wipe up the left over vomit in the sink from whoever stayed before. When I called to ask the front desk for someone to come clean up the mess she said not until morning.

After fighting for the room we paid for two months in advance. Instead of a view of building in front of us… room was ok… view beautiful… bar tender needs some time to rest, she seemed real stressed out. Probably won’t stay again there.

I have to admit I’m disappointed in this place. My Oceanview is from a window with people walking to their rooms all afternoon. Very small room too. Slept with TV on because of noise level around room so couldn’t hear ocean anyway with doors banging. Also this must be a pet room because it smells a bit. No tip for housekeeper due to lack of towels and bed looked like it was made by my 11 year old grandson. Next time I come to Newport I’ll pay more and stay down the street

I selected this hotel primarily for four reasons: location to the beach, pet friendly, kitchenette, reasonable price
Hopefully this helps someone make an informed decision.
We had a double queen room with ocean view. That was lovely and nice. Ocean view doesn’t mean easy beach access. The beach is accessed through stairs between buildings C and B with 92 steps. Not a problem for me, but might be misleading.
The room is small, adequate but small. Not a lot of space to move around in for two adults and one small child.
Kitchenette: small microwave and refrigerator; adequate, but not fancy or what I was expecting.
The room is well used, chairs are dirty; but the beds were firm and comfortable enough. Older TV –but I don’t really go to the beach to watch TV :)
We arrived late at night, check in was easy and quick-​ish. The front desk was very nice and very helpful. They let us know the main road would be closed between 12 – 2 for a parade and showed us alternate ways around town. They also provided coupons for the Shilo Café (I will get to that)
The pet fee seems a bit extreme at $ 25 per night, but I guess that is less than getting a house sitter at home.
Pool: the pool closest to our room (not the one in the conference center) was VERY COLD. This was one of the main reasons for picking this hotel. This was disappointing as my 6-​year old LOVES to swim, is very good at swimming, very active in the pool and was FREEZING in about 10 minutes.
We attempted to go to the Shilo Café for breakfast (this is different than the Shilo’s Restaurant). Sadly, there was only one employee… Doing it all… Host, server and cook. So we waited about 15 minutes to get seated and then decided to eat elsewhere. I felt bad for him. Not a deal breaker as there are many great places to eat in Newport, but I don’t think this reflects well on the company itself.
Finally, I had to spend some time in my room working while my husband took my daughter swimming and the cleaning staff walked by my room several times and one of them threw down the «f-​bomb» at least three times as he walked by my window. Now, I am all for freedom of speech but there are a lot of families and children staying at a hotel and this was disappointingly unprofessional.

If you have low standards, this place is mediocre. If you have high standards, this place is awful. The sheets are stained, the rooms smell, and our toilet didn’t flush. I wouldn’t dare go barefoot on the carpet in my room, and I wish I had brought flip flops for the shower. The fact that it’s on the beach is the only plus.
Normally I wouldn’t have even written a review for a place like this, because I think the other crappy reviews speak for themselves, but I feel like I have to warn people: CHECK YOUR BANK STATEMENTS AFTER STAYING HERE. They overcharged me $ 142. I was staying here for an event and my boyfriend and I were sharing a room with another couple. The guys had planned on splitting the room right down the middle – the room was $ 284, so they would each pay $ 142. I had put my card down initially when we checked in (as hotels make you do), but I told the man when we checked in that I didn’t want my card to be charged (the only reason I put my card down was because I was the only one with a credit card, and the man who checked us in incorrectly told us that we couldn’t use a debit card). He reassured me that he would not charge it when we checked out, as he understood that my boyfriend was going to be paying for my half of the room.
Checkout rolls around and my boyfriend and the other guy we were with pay for the room with their debit cards just as planned – $ 142 each. No mention was made of my card, so I assume everything is fine.
A few weeks later when paying my credit card bill I noticed a $ 142 charge to the Shilo Inn. THEY CHARGED US $ 426 FOR A ROOM THAT WAS $ 284. They didn’t just accidentally charge my card instead of one of the guys’ cards – they charged ALL THREE OF US. I was able to call back and get my money back, but it took a couple days and I had to speak to multiple people to get my issue resolved. NOT worth the headache.

Ok, I gave it 3 stars, the view I give 5 stars, our room had no shampoo or soap I did call and they gave us a shampoo and soap but the next morning at 5:30 in the morning they gave us a wake-​up call we did not even ask for a wake-​up call, I went to the front desk. He said somebody in the room must have ordered a wake-​up call I advised him but nobody in the room ask for a wake-​up call he apologized I told him I was okay with it because I was up anyway my wife was a little upset because she was still sleeping but other than that it was a beautiful time over at Newport, I really like the lounge the bartender was very nice and the view was awesome

DECREPIT, NO-​MAINTENANCE, CRAPHOLE
Wife and I stayed here while driving up the Oregon coast. Amazing view and that is it! This place is falling in. Do not waste your money. Do not get into the elevator (fair-​warning).

We were scheduled to check in at 4 and got here about 5:30 and the room is still not ready. Okay. I can handle that. But we call at 7:30 and they say the room is ready, check us in, we get to the room and there are no sheets on the bed, no towels, and the room smells badly. By this time it’s 8:30 and we are exhausted and just trying to relax and maybe go out for a drink or something but we are stuck waiting for housekeeping. Do NOT stay here. There are plenty of great places on the coast. This is our first and last time for sure at the yucky and gross Shilo Inn.

Love the ocean view, but pool could be better no spa and we only had one towel for a two bed room will see how breakfast is in the morning! The sounds of the waves at night made it better though but still not very satisfying

We come to Newport every year for the seafood and wine festival. This is by far my least favorite place we’ve stayed. It’s normal to raise rates on busy weekends, but I feel totally robbed! The bed was super hard, there was no shampoo, just a little bar of soap, and the hair dryer didn’t work. Felt a little too much like camping for the koney. On the upside, the staff was odd but friendly.

If you like 80’s wallpaper and curved (pre HD style) tv’s then this your place! The rooms all though in fair condition, need completely gutted in building D. Also maybe because it is winter, but this place has no AC & gets hot. The service is excellent, minus the guy at the breakfast café that acted like we were trying to get a free breakfast when we wanted to charge it to our room. Great view of the ocean. This place isn’t anything fancy, but for a one night stay overlooking the ocean (during the winter), this is a great choice.

If you decide to stay here make sure your family brings flip flops to wear in the rooms with the filthy carpets and in the bathroom, I felt the sides of the tube/​shower and was grossed out but the the tub had nothing on the toilet. I took a photograph but could not post it on this site after writing this review.
I agree with the previous comments! Great view that’s about it. The family suit was a queen bed in one room and a trundle bed in the other room. I have never seen this before, it was pathetic!
We asked to see the room first, but decided to stay. My husband went to pay and two unsavory employees came and stood outside the room while my daughter and I were inside, the creepy make looked in the window, saw my 16 year old daughter and knock on the window, I was not in view. When I opened the door the trashy female told me it was an accident. It was not. We locked the deadbolts and put a chair under both doors. To say the least we did not feel safe here. I should have packed a tent to pitch on the beach, we would of felt safer.

Another reviewer said it already: nice view and that’s about it.
Check-​in: I stood in line for what felt like a half an hour. We were finally given our large, metal keys and were «parked» in the main building which is located smack dab in a big intersection, so that every time you open the door to your room, the whole street gets to look inside. It really should be called a motel. It is quite overpriced for what it offers.
However it’s fairly close to the city and the rooms have a nice view. Every morning we would wake up with a large flock of seagulls screeching in our ears — someone was feeding them in the parking lot and they were happily returning the favor by pooping everywhere.
All in all however, if you’re on a budget, it’s one of the cheapest, it’s not terribly unkempt (with the exception of the busy carpet which could use some serious shampooing) and it’s in one of the most touristy places in Oregon, so it may prove the last resort solution and it’s OK.
In the end, I didn’t go for the room but for the sights and nature. And once you’re outside you forget about the incredibly weird location of the bathroom sink — right next to the entry, the poor design and location of the coffee machine and hair dryer: one next to the other and both next to the sink, with their wires almost dipping into the water. It’s a clumsy, poorly designed yet fairly clean motel (probably thanks to the hard-​working staff). As a last solution, I would go again but ask to be assigned a room in any other building but the main one.

This place is good for a ocean view and that’s about it.
Check in was average for a Friday night. About 15 minutes with 2 guest in front of us. We dropped off our bags in the room and headed to the restaurant. Food was good and the service was great. That’s where it end.
Older style tube TV did not work at first. Finally got it to work. No fan or ac in the room just a heater with 2 small windows in the room. Not much air flow at all. I opened the dresser drawers to find 3 used towels and a bathing suit. On the table in the corner were beer bottle caps. The pool was also cold even though we were told it was heated.
The next morning we went to the café for breakfast. They were extremely slow. The waitress forgot several items from our meal and would not accept our coupons for breakfast for our children even though we were told by the front desk staff that they would.
Only thing the hotel did to remedy any of this was to refund us $ 20. Beware folks
