A Matter of Style & Day Spa

My first visit to see Lenah for brow shaping was SO great and I left SO happy… if I had never returned I may have given Matter of Style four stars instead of two. On the other hand, if my most recent visit was my first I would have only given one star.
I called to make an appointment with Lenah, and was told she’s on leave but they had another esthetician who would be able to help me. When I arrived for my appointment, the woman at the front desk looked at me and then continued her casual conversation with another employee while I waited at the counter. A bit unprofessional, not the nicest welcome into a salon, but not the end of the world.
I was sent upstairs for my appointment and I tried to make myself tea while I waited. The hot water was out of order and the coffee machine wasn’t working. A little annoying, but again… not the end of the world.
When the esthetician was ready, I went into her room and told her that I needed my brows ‘cleaned up’. I said ‘I want to keep them full. I like them full”. I said again, in the interest of clarity that I needed them ‘just cleaned up a bit’. She trimmed and waxed and I before I knew it, my wonderfully full but slightly too-​grown-​in eyebrows were replaced by pencil thin eyebrows. And they were UNEVEN. It was not what I wanted nor what I clearly (multiple times) asked for. And then she gave me her card and pitched products that she sells. Uh, no.
Now, I know that I should have said something. If not to her, I should have said something to SOMEONE before I left the salon. But I was upset, and embarrassed, and unlike a crappy haircut or color, there really isn’t anything that can be done about teeny tiny skinny eyebrows. So I left and I will never be back.
There are many other places in Oak Park to try if you need your brows serviced, and as soon as my eyebrows grow back I plan on trying them.

I have been going to Steven almost 2 years and he does an excellent job on my hair. He always is very positive and I really enjoy talking with him about the movies and his family. I highly recommend him as not only a great hair dresser, but a traffic person!

Overall the haircut was solid. Reason I’m giving a medicore review is because stylist cut the back of my neck with the electric trimmers. Wasn’t just one scratch it was several which left marks for 4 days.

Awesome salon! Tracy and Stevan are amazing!!! Anthony is a phenomenal massage therapist. Tara is the best at reception, have her book your appointment.

Went in for a waxing and Angela did a beautiful job!!! She kept me talking through the service so I felt comfortable and relaxed! The women who took my appointment was very nice and happily answered all my questions. Fair pricing too!

So I wanted to try this salon for a blow dry simply because they open earlier than my favorite salon 212 Had a plane to catch so I made the appt for 8:30am, the person who was supposed to blow dry was just starting to cut a clients hair at 830 Really!!! So I decided to wait but after listening to the reception desk personnel complaining about something the person who checked me in did wrong, I was like you know this place isn’t professional at all No one apologized for the delay nor did they explain why the appt was made when clearly the stylist had no intention of making an effort to hurry her with her client
I walked out after 20 minutes since I have a schedule I need to keep and obviously they don’t care about schedules
Will not attempt to make another appointment here

I went in to have my eyebrows waxed, trimmed and shaped and Carla was great! The finished product is perfect. I love my brows and thought she did a great job taming my otherwise unruly, curly brows. It is quite the task for most estheticians.
Other reasons to try this salon:

They are not the cheapest place around but it is a classy, well kept and reputable establishment. Those qualities come at a price. And it’s a price I’m willing to pay given my experience with Carla.

I have lived in OP for years and passed this salon many, many times. A gift card from Christmas prompted me to finally visit for a massage today. The staff is very, very friendly. The receptionist greeted me happily when I entered and showed me where to go. Anthony was my masseuse, and he was very knowledgeable and helpful with my back, shoulder, and neck pain. His understanding of anatomy and eagerness to help me with my pain were much appreciated. I felt so much better when I left! I will return! Great find!!!

I went to Lenah for an eyebrow wax and had been once before. She is great! She takes her time and doesn’t rush through. She makes sure your brows are shaped perfectly and that every last hair is plucked and trimmed to perfection. I won’t be going to anyone else after this. She even recommended an eyebrow tint as my eyebrows were starting to get really light and thin due to stress. She picked a great color and now my brows look awesome for the holiday! Can’t wait to go back!

I just visited the spa for my first time, and it will not be my last. I had a massage with Anthony. He did such an amazing job listening to what I wanted and really made me feel comfortable. He was so personable, but not too chatty. He is obviously very gifted at what he does. I have been receiving massages for over 10 years, and this has to be one of the best overall experiences I have had in a long time. I will be back again.

I came to this Salon when I heard Danielle from Salon 212 moved here. She is a great stylist and really delivers! Plus Matter of Style is great and filled with very hospitable staff.

I was ready for a change and decided to go blonde. This is very tricky on my hair considering I have very dark hair, dark brown with reddish tone. I went to A Matter of Style because I heard great things about the place. I got my hair dyed and got highlight, it looked good but just not what I wanted. I went back the next day and they were willing to fix it the way I wanted it. I walked out absolutely happy and appreciated. friendly employees, clean and comfortable atmosphere. I highly recommend this place if you want great hair.

After much searching I found out Danielle from 212 had landed here. I was so excited! She is the only stylist I have found who cuts my hair so perfectly that it looks the same after I style it the next day. She is also an expert colorist. I couldn’t be happier that I can follow her to a Matter of Style.

I heard from a friend that Danielle moved here after she left Salon 212. I immediately called and made an appointment. Danielle is talented, and she pays attention to you and your requests. Salon 212s loss, Matter of Styles gain! And Matter of Style isn’t filled with hungover gossipy stylists. ;)

I went here for the first time today, because my favorite stylist from Salon 212 (down the street) is now working here. It is a great space with lots of services and very friendly staff. The hair color seems to be a better quality than what I got at Salon 212, and they do free makeup application on Saturdays! If you go, I highly recommend Danielle for haircuts and color.

I love it here. I get my hair cut and styled by Vicktor every few months. He is the best hair stylist I have every had. I have very curly hair and he knows how to cut it and style it. He also colors and straightens my hair when needed. I feel very fortunate that I found Vicktor and A Matter of Style for my hair needs! The service is very speedy too with no wait. I have always struggled to find a good stylist who knows my curly multi-​diverse hair! I will keep coming here! I need to try their other services as well! All of the hair stylist seem very good there!

PROS: The women behind the front desk was super nice in the phone and when I walked in. She explained to me where to go for my no chip mani and that Virginia would be with me shorty. She was super nice and excited to be working with me. She took her time and answered all my questions. My nails never looked better! And after my services she even gave me a little tour upstairs and explained more about the services she offers.
CONS: When I walked into the front good yes I was greeted but no one asked me to take my coat or even where I should put it. And we’ll with a high end salon no one asked me if they could get my something to drink. Like most salon & spa places do in this area of oak park. While waiting for my appointment I hear some women in her office witch was fine until she started to swear at the computer it something. After then she tell me «oh your waiting for Virginia right?» «I go tell her your here.» Umm wait isn’t that what the front desk women said? But what kinda made me upset the most was on there website it was $ 40 for a no chip, no where did it say plus $ 10 for removal. Someone should add that to the website!

I didn’t have a bad experience here, so don’t take the 3-​stars the wrong way. It’s simply that I would not come back here for a cut (I have a girl I normally go to elsewhere in the NW ‘burbs), the cuts are more expensive than I am used to paying and it’s a little too trendy for me.
However, I LOVE that I was able to get an instant appointment when I called late one night, hoping for a haircut to freshen up my style before meeting up with an ex the next night to catch up after 7 years. So as you can imagine, I had a lot riding on this cut.
I honestly don’t remember the name of the girl who cut my hair and I am so bummed because I liked her a whole lot! She was awesome at offering suggestions and being honest when telling me to keep my hair long and not cut too much off the bottom. She was even totally awesome to talk to, about politics (I know, taboo — but she wasn’t overbearing or creepy about it at all!), current events, and family. I almost felt like we were old friends catching up, only she had the fate of my hair in her hands.
Needless to say, I did enjoy my experience. It was pretty much what I expected from a trendy Oak Park salon, which is to say they just only met my expectations here. However, I had made my way here after reading the good Unilocal reviews (though most, if not many, were for waxing only). If I had to rate this place on my haircut alone, it would be a solid 4-​star review (however, when I eventually did go back to my normal stylist in the ‘burbs, she told me my hair was cut unevenly — boo!).
I won’t return here, but I would be happy to recommend to anyone looking for a decent local salon.

I am so utterly grateful to these amazing ladies! I’ve come here twice now for last minute makeup applications and updos for weddings. The most recent time Holly did a GORGEOUS updo with little curls that absolutely everyone commented on at the wedding. Even the bride told me my hair looked better hers!
Holly Anne gave me the perfect smokey eye and natural makeup app. and she let me lead as far as every color she picked~! Such a sweet and friendly staff and they know their stuff so well.

Now I must preface this review with the declaimer that I have NOT gotten my hair done here. But other than that, I’ve experienced basically everything else this place has to offer.
I’ve been going to A Matter of Style for over 10 years. The people who work here are great and seem to really care about their customers. The people at the front desk have always been particularly nice to me.
I definitely recommend getting your nails done here. It’s pricey, but you get the full spa experience. They have great spa chairs and quality products and really take the time to do it right and give you a relaxing experience at the same time. The only bad thing is that they only have 2 pedicure chairs, so it often can be difficult to get a mani/​pedi appointment.
I also HIGHLY recommend Lenah if you’re looking to get your eyebrows waxed or a facial. She’s an eyebrow wizard. Some how she manages to get my crazy, curly eyebrows to look perfect without waxing too much off. Make sure you call in advance to get an appointment with her… she books up really quickly.
Overall, quality place, nice people.
