History

Established in 2007.

A Verb for Keeping Warm had a humble beginning. Kristine started dyeing yarn and fiber in her home kitchen. Soon after her first wool show, through strong sales, it became evident that A Verb for Keeping Warm was here to stay. Kristine rented a space in the Activspace building for her dye studio. Within the next year, Kristine rented 2 more spaces in the Activspace building, one for a small shop selling mainly A Verb for Keeping Warm yarn and fiber, the other space a classroom. By February of 2010, it was evident that Verb needed a new, larger, permanent home. Through the support of Verb’s customers, Kristine leased the 1700 sq foot building at 6328 San Pablo Ave, Oakland, and began to build a new dye studio, store and classroom. Once deciding to expand, Kristine began the search for other interesting, home grown businesses to show alongside her own line of yarn and fiber. Now, at A Verb for Keeping Warm, you will find a plethora of unique, highly crafted yarns, fibers and fabrics.

Meet the Business Owner

Kristine V.

Business Owner

Kristine first learned to sew and to knit from her Midwestern Grandmother. In college, Kristine traveled to India to study Art and Architecture. There she started a textile research project with a group of semi-nomadic camel herders named Rabari. Upon returning to the US, Kristine worked at Poppy Fabrics in Oakland and The Textile Museum in Washington DC. Within a year and a half of leaving India, Kristine returned on a Fulbright grant to continue her research of the Rabari’s exquisite hand appliqué and embroidery. There, she learned about natural dyeing. Upon returning to the US, Kristine learned how to spin yarn. A Verb for Keeping Warm is the manifestation of Kristine’s work in the US and her work in India.
