James and The Giant Cupcake

Nice collection of cupcakes, some of which are vegan. My favorite was the axel rose and the lemon (vegan), vegan chocolate was pretty good as well. Parking was easy to find on a Saturday afternoon.

This cupcake shop was perfect. I loved the selection and all 7 we tried were amazing! The shop itself is really cute and offers self serve water for customer ease. The customer service was outstanding.

Best cupcakes in Oakland or SF, I’m just throwing that out there. I can’t count how many cupcakes we tried across the bay in a hunt for the best.
Instead of a cake, we ordered mini cupcakes for our wedding last September. They were all perfectly moist and beautifully decorated. Delivered right on time with no hiccups. Guests were hoarding these things like it was a cupcake end of days.
Our flavors:
–lemon
–dreamfluff (for a vanilla cupcake, this was the first flavor we ran out of!)
–vegan love potion
–cocoa crazy (my sister-​in-​law still talks about this cupcake)
–vegan salty banana (to die for, seriously)
They also provided us with a giant sugar and spice for cutting, which was all we could have wanted.
If you are coming in for the first time, try getting an assortment of the mini cupcakes so you can try all the delicious flavors! The salty banana is my favorite: banana, sea salt and caramel, yum!

This place is pretty tasty. I’ve been there twice in a week. I’ve had the Chiquita and the Axel Rose. Both are tasty. My boyfriend had the blueberry cheesecake. It was extremely blue and I need to make sure I’m not ingesting alot of blue dye, so next time I’ll ask more questions.
They are very helpful and patient there. Sometimes the names of cupcakes are confusing so I have to ask what everything is!

These are some of the best cupcakes I have EVER had! The Sea Salt Caramel were to die for. These cupcakes make for a great gift or dessert for guest — they will be wowed!
I think I’ve found my new favorite cupcake spot! Had I known they were open on New Years Day, I would be there!

I thought cupcakes were «over» and I know I was pretty tired of them. I’ve waited in line for over an hour at the peak of the cupcake «craze», only to be disappointed by lackluster flavors and texture.
We were driving down San Pablo when I saw the sandwich board for James and the Giant Cupcake and I was really curious. There is a reason cupcakes became a trend, they are a great way to have a treat in a reasonable portion size.
As you can see by the 5 stars, I LOVE THIS BAKERY! The flavors are SO GOOD and every time, the cupcakes are moist and fresh. Best of all, the buttercream gets that wonderful sugar «crust» on it, something only possible with top quality ingredients. Also, the people who work here are so patient! I always have a lot of questions about flavors and ingredients and it’s really hard for me to decide but they are always super sweet.

James and the Giant Cupcake made me look at cupcakes in a completely different light. I started to taste my cupcakes based on its different components — cake, cream and flavor — for good and bad reasons given below.
To give a little background, I am a big lover of sweets yet cupcakes have never piqued my interest. I am glad to have given cupcakes another shot here.
The store décor is cute and homely in a very American way. There are two tables with the smaller one able to sit two and the other one spacious for maybe 2 – 3. It is small so I wouldn’t bet on eating your cupcakes there.
I was really excited for the red velvet and when I tried it, the cake was moist and cream tasty, but for some reason the red velvet didn’t mesh with the cream. I would taste some red velvet, some cake and at certain bites just the cream. It was a good cupcake but I was not impressed.
I had also bought the lemon cupcake and decided to give this one a try. This one was much better. I could taste that these were made from fresh lemon and the cream is to die for. The cake consistency was same as the red velvet and I had to buy another one for the road. Def would come again!

So soft and moist. A cute little joint to have a cup of tea. They sell out fast! Definitely try the lemon and red velvet.

We had our tasting of cupcakes for our upcoming wedding few weeks ago and tried a range of their most popular flavors and we couldn’t decide which to pick, we liked all of them! we were surprised how much we liked the vegan and gluten free chocolate cupcake and we’re not even vegan nor gluten intolerant!
very friendly staff, efficient and straight to the point wedding coordinator, reasonably priced cupcakes, would highly recommend this place for casual cupcake fixes or for events.

You might be wondering where the giant cupcake is.
I know I was.
They only make a limited amount of giant cupcakes and it’s underneath the glass case that holds cake. So not every cupcake is a giant cupcake. Every cupcake really just is a regular cupcake. Or a mini if you’re on a diet.
The flavors here are what your would find at other places. Red velvet, chocolate, Waffle maple bacon, and mint chocolate chip.
Here’s the thing. If you’re going to say something tastes like Waffle or pancakes or maple, it better tastes like that flavor. All of us tried a piece and said it was vanilla with vanilla frosting. And since I stole the only piece of bacon, it really did taste plain. One piece of bacon shouldn’t change your whole entire cupcake.
The chocolate and red velvet tasted similar except for the frosting, and the only reason anyone wanted to give this place 4 stars was for the Andes chocolate on the mint chocolate cupcake. So I said no to the 4 stars. It’s not like they baked their own Andes mints.
Also, a bit pricey since 4 cupcakes at around $ 3.25 really adds up.
I’ll compromise and give this place 3.5 stars rounded down for price and taste.

They have very tasty cupcakes and a uniquely good variety, too! Anything red velvet takes the cake for me, besides anything indulgently rich scrumptious chocolatey chocolate. Their service is the bombdiggitty and the prices are fairly reasonable. They will will do their best to accommodate any order to fit your need. They will even work hard at fulfilling last minute orders! This is my place to go when I need to place an order to satisfy sinful cupcake pleasures for parties and get-​togethers.

Such a great place to grab some cupcakes if you are in the area! Mini cupcakes are only $ 1.50 and the classic sized ones are about $ 3 to $ 4 each. YUMMY CUPCAKES! Parking around that area is not ideal. So, prepare to park a block or so away (in the residential areas). Super friendly staff and the place is fun sized.

Solid 4-​star cupcakery. I love going to this place to see what type of daily cupcake flavors they have. The have both regular and mini-​cupcake options, in addition to buttercream and cream cheese-​flavored options. They typically have a cupcake named after someone famous. Cupcake flavors pay homage to Mariah Carey (the Emancipation of Mimi) to Michael Jackson (King of Pop cupcake). Overall great spot to check out if you happen to be in the Oakland area. (Tip: go close to closing time and they may throw an extra cupcake in your order).

We had the pleasure with working with the James and the Giant Cupcake staff for our wedding cupcakes/​cake. We have been long time fans of their cupcakes since we first had them at First Fridays in Oakland. Even before we picked a venue for our wedding we already knew who we would be hiring to do our cupcakes. They set up our cupcakes beautifully! They were a HUGE hit at the wedding and are still being talked about Thank you guys so much!

EDIT: My husband called this morning and spoke with the owner of the business; she offered to fully refund us and do our next special occasion cake on the house. Can’t ask for anything better than that!
Two months ago I put in an advanced special order for a 9″, three layer cake for my baby shower. The employee took down my info and even requested she be able to keep an invite I made to use as a guide for incorporating my shower theme into the cake. I was told they could basically recreate the invite ON the cake. Great! I paid the $ 40 deposit and then waited eight long weeks to see what sort of magic they had worked for my baby shower.
I showed up today at 6:30PM to pick up my cake and two dozen mini cupcakes and the employee working this evening, not the same as the one who had taken my order, plunks down a cake in the right SIZE for my shower but completely and utterly wrong, decorations-​wise. There was actually ZERO customization. This cake is white with teal lettering on it when I was spun a story of light blue butter cream, pumpkins, and edible glitter on my cake to match my theme. This cake looks NOTHING like the cake I ordered or intended to pick up. Inscription is FREE at bakeries and it usually comes in cursive, not caps locked print.
I’m in my third trimester of pregnancy. After TWO MONTHS of waiting to see this cake and being so thoroughly disappointed by what was made for me for $ 40 (which was supposed to be an $ 80 cake when all was said and done) I could barely hold back the tears as I told her this cake was not what I had ordered. She honestly didn’t have much to offer me and, since the initial employee suggested I pick my cake up at closing to serve the following morning, I had no time to have it remade or to pick it up tomorrow morning. I was on the verge of tears and had other loose ends to tie up for the shower so I grabbed the cake and got out of there before the waterworks started up but I am NOT satisfied.
I specifically chose James as the spot to have my shower cake done because I wanted the customization. I was willing to spend some extra money to get exactly what I wanted and their team failed me. If I wanted the cake I received I could have gone to Costco but I didn’t go to Costco because basic is not what I wanted. I wasn’t charged for the second half of the cake fee but I fully intend to get my deposit back as well. I don’t think she would have offered me so much as the break on the other half of the payment of I hadn’t mentioned that I paid for a customized cake and was not paying them $ 80 for what they gave me. The cake I got looks like an after thought for someone who ordered MONTHS in advance.
Mistakes happen, I get it, but a full refund for a cake I have to decorate myself would have been a nice «sorry» for completely dropping the ball on my baby shower cake.

I pass by this place everyday on my way to work and have always wanted to check it out. Yesterday seemed like a cupcake kind of day. The person who greeted me was really nice and went over the specialty cupcakes they had. I like that they have mini, regular, and jumbo cupcakes (starting from $ 1.50, $ 3, and $ 7 respectively) to satisfy any appetite. And they also make mini cakes as well.
They have a good variety of flavors to choose from and everything was decorated adorably. I decided to go with Salted Caramel and The Dude (contains vodka and white chocolate ganache — yum!). They were both very good and had just the right amount of sweetness. My cupcakes weren’t as moist as I would expect from a specialty cupcake shop but maybe I just got an anomaly. Can’t wait to come back and try other flavors… I’ve got my eye on the Blueberry Cheesecake cupcake.

I have been to some of the Elite Events and have noticed the James and the Giant Cupcake booths and have been impressed by the taste of the cupcakes. Turn the clock a year later and my new wife selects James and the Giant Cupcake to do our wedding cake. I saw them on Pinterest and they looked very unique and read about them on Unilocal.
We selected an assortment of regular and mini cupcakes in a variety of flavors (red velvet, salted caramel, carrot cake, german chocolate and white cake). The guests at my wedding party enjoyed the scrumptious cupcakes. I was on the microphone and I had told the wedding audience that one of the cupcakes had a sealed one hundred dollar bill in one of them.
Hats off to Caleigh for creating such an impressive masterpiece. She had also created a couple dozen mini-​cupcakes too for the venue.

HEAVEN ON EARTH! Not to mention the name of this place takes me way back to my childhood. James and the Giant Peach was literally my favorite movie/​book of all time and I wanted so badly to live inside a peach with my fellow insect friends. Sadly, that never happened, but…
THESE CUPCAKES ARE SO GOOD I CANNOT EVEN FIND THE WORDS TO EXPRESS! They have gluten-​free and vegan options which is super rad! And many different delicious and dangerous flavors to choose from. The selection is so tricky because everything makes your mouth water. There are mini cupcakes, regular sized cupcakes and even large cupcakes (NEED!). They are all beautifully decorated. Some had edible glitter, some had gorgeous patterns, and all of them were just pretty to look at. Then we took our first bite and WOW!
The flavors are so rich, creamy, sweet and heavenly. Our two cupcakes that we split were gone in minutes. Every bite was so wonderful and also so sad because we knew soon the bliss would end. I even nudged my fiancé to get just a few more cupcakes. A FEW MORE CUPCAKES! I swear, I could have eaten a whole plate of them. Someday, I told myself, someday.
The staff here is amazing. Super sweet girls. Everybody was talking about their love for cupcakes and it was just a super great environment. These are my kinda people. Not to mention the interior of this place is so charming. I loved the little antique plates that they served the cupcakes on. They were all unique; different sizes and shapes and patterns.
CANNOT WAIT TO COME BACK. I really hope my fiancé will take me back again today. Could this be a new daily ritual? Maybe we could live on these cupcakes…

Walking in, it’s a small, cute little boutique.
Love the cute atmosphere even down to their iPad holder, it was wooden & handmade by a vendor that’s in the same area. Pretty cool.
They had quite a selection in tow for a Sunday.
I opted for the mini cupcakes:
— Vegan & GF Snickerdoodle
— «Bad Santa» — Vanilla Bourbon cake with Egg Nog frosting
— «Dream Fluff» — Vanilla cake with buttercream frosting
OMG, the BAD SANTA was by far my FAVE!
I am guessing that they only have that for this season so you might want to stop by there & give it a try before Christmas season ends.
If you are reading this review AFTER the Christmas season, for sure give their Vegan & GF Snickerdoodle a try, it will not disappoint! The «Dream Fluff» was AMAZING as well.
They have mini cupcakes as well, so you can’t feel too guilty about digging into one of their cupcakes :)))))

I’m hooked on you James… Don’t tell my honey (it will be our little secret)!!! You look so good and irresistible, I just want to eat you all up… lick every inch! OH NO, it’s too late… the cats out of the bag and I’m BUSTED!!! Caught red handed! That is enjoying every bite of James and the Giant Cupcake.
I know sounds horrible… but it’s so good! When I found out this cupcakery was located walking distance from my job, I knew I was going to be in trouble. After a 10 minute walk, I was introduced to the wonderful world of cupcakes.
Each day they had one vegan cupcake ($ 3-​regular, $ 1.75-mini). On this day, I was blessed with 2. They offer day old cupcakes for ½ off. Total score! I would highly recommend you grabbing a couple. We ate our day old 2 days later (which made them 3 days) and it was still moist.
I won’t leave out my non-​vegan homies, yes they serve cupcakes with eggs and dairy. Even though I can’t vouch for them, my co-​workers sure can. They enjoyed every bite. Heck I’m sure Mariah Carey would enjoy their «Emancipation of Mimi» cupcake. They even added a butterfly as a special touch. The word «sinful» is how the Red Velvet was described by my co-​worker.
My favorite was the chocolate cupcake with a ganache topping. It had some type of filling in it and one single fresh raspberry. I would call that one sinful. Sorry, I don’t know the name. The carrot cupcake was also good. Great use of spices. The icing was not overwhelming, but tends to harden after a while if not covered.
So what are you waiting for? Have a threesome that your wife/​gf would approve of… you, her and James with his Giant Cupcake! Yummmmy!!!
BTW-​They really do make a «Giant Cupcake»!
