At Inside Out Design, we strive to bring our combined fields of knowledge to the table to tailor your environment to best fit you, your property and your budget. We realize that every project is a unique, custom work which comes about as a carefully crafted collaboration between client and designer, the nuances of a given site, and complexities of program.

A portion of our projects are primarily «interior/​architectural» or «exterior», but still retain an eye towards a total environment that takes advantage of its place in the world, the movement of the sun, and a connection to a greater whole. Whether it be the design of a ritual purification mikveh, a roof garden or the home or garden of your dreams, we are inspired by the desire to improve upon the condition of the built world, and create something our clientele will enjoy for years to come.

We like to work with a variety of materials, styles and scales to best achieve a unique, appropriate expression for every project.

History

Established in 2003.

Inside Out principals Julianna Fecskés-​Phillips and Penn Phillips work directly with every client. Projects are carefully monitored to ensure personal attention, exemplary service and attention to detail. We work in a variety of scales and budgets.

Prior to forming Inside Out Design with Penn Phillips, Julianna gained valuable design experience at several world-​renowned firms, including Frank Gehry Associates, and Behnisch + Partner of Stuttgart, Germany. After working together at Hart/​Howerton, a landscape and architecture design office in San Francisco, Julianna and Penn formed their own interdisciplinary firm in 2003.

Penn holds a professional degree in Urban Planning, with an emphasis in Landscape Architecture, from Arizona State University. Prior to forming Inside Out Design with Julianna Phillips in 2003, he worked with several well established landscape architecture firms in the Bay Area including Gates & Associates, Hart/​Howerton, and Wolfe-​Mason.

Business Owner

John Pennell Phillips is a registered Landscape Architect in the state of California (CLA 5602) as well as in Arizona (#49 783). As a certified arborist, he is member of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) as well a member to the local Western Chapter to the ISA.

Julianna Fecskés Phillips is the Architecture Principal of Inside Out Design, with nearly 25 years of experience designing residential, educational and commercial projects. She is a LEED accredited design professional and is dedicated to seeking sustainable, green solutions where appropriate. Julianna Phillips is a California registered Architect, #C-​30 327
