Lignum Vitae Ltd, a fine wood cabinet maker, is devoted to the design and construction of beautiful custom cabinets and furniture. We work in a comprehensive way with architects, designers, and clients to produce exquisite yet affordable products.

We believe that a creative collaboration with our clients ensures that the pieces we create are not only lovely to look at but attuned to their lifestyle and personal aesthetic. Our three senior craftsmen have a collective century’s worth of experience in fine woodworking. We take particular pride in the creation of beautiful, functional kitchens and baths.

History

Established in 1978.

Lignum Vitae started as one-​man shop in a two-​car garage, building a wide array of wooden items from retaining walls to jewelry boxes. Lignum Vitae moved to its to its current location in 1984 and has concentrated on the creation of beautiful and functional wood interiors for both the residential and commercial markets.

Meet the Business Owner

Jim M.

Business Owner

Jim got his start cutting down oak trees and turning them into firewood, fence posts and barn gates on the family farm. He got a degree in Soil Science and Creative Writing at Johns Hopkins, and pursued a career in youth group work until he moved to the Bay Area in 1976, and went back to woodworking. For 35 years, he has run a shop that has had as many as 12 employees, but is very happy now to lead a small team of very skilled craftsmen, working in a very well equipped shop, creating exceptionally fine cabinets.

An avid cook, he particularly enjoys collaborating in the design and construction of lovely, workable kitchens. When he’s not working, he can be found in his garden or his kitchen or singing with one of his choirs.
