Haven‘t been to this place in a while. Decided to stop by and get a torta with carnitas which used to be my go to. Boy was I disappointed. Not only did the price go up by $ 2 to $ 6, but there was hardly any meat compared to before. They increased the price and subtracted the food. Unfortunately this seems to be the norm everywhere you go.

Dude. Really, this is one of my favorite places for food. Great food. Nice smiles. Chili relleno burrito is awesome. Want something custom? They will try to accommodate. I guess I like this place. Simple. Good. Food.

On behalf of Xicana Moratorium Coalition we want to appreciate Taqueria la Mejor for their donation to support the 36th Annual Xicana Moratorium Day, where we will be bringing attention to the Third World Liberation – One Land One People, taking place August 30th, 2015 from 12−5pm at San Antonio Park in Oakland. Their donation made possible this annual free event for people of color in the Bay Area.

So today I finally gave this place a try. I’ve lived right down the street for almost two years and because I had heard some bad reviews I decided to pass on eating here. To be honest I was actually looking to go to Gerardo’s and as usually they are never actually open when they say they will be(but that’s another story). Based on a good amount of reviews the customer service was good, I was hungry and figured why not might as well give it a try. The reviews seemed to be 50⁄50 on the quality of food and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised! I do consider myself a foodie and I have been to a lot of Mexican taqueria’s this one is by far not bland … At least not the things I ordered. I got two carne asada tacos, super burrito chile verde and the pazole!!! The tacos although very basic were quite tasty, the chile verde burrito was seasoned just right and very yummy. I have yet to try the pazole but from what reviews say it should be pretty good. When i went up to pay for my order I was shocked that my total was only $ 20 bucks and that was with a drink included! They might not serve the biggest burritos but the quality and price are pretty good! I wish the hours were later on weekdays but I will be eating here again!

Not great, but pretty good. Extremely simple fresh food. I like that it is not fancy, but for some, it might be too informal. There was a dusty Christmas wreath on the wall in the middle of June. More suprising was a black woman there eating in her pajamas and slippers. It made me want to scream Aye Carumba! When I saw her licking her extremely long nails covered with mole sauce, I took a hike. Come for the food, not the atmosphere.

This is the spot! Pros: quick friendly service, you can watch them make your food. Freely can take jalepenos and radishes from a jar. Spacious and busy. Cons: they only take cash therefore I can’t always come here. I suggested using square so people who don’t have cash can still go there. No improvement yet with that. Overall. Best local taqueria they’ve been around since before I moved in!(In 1998).

Delicious chicken enchiladas and steak taco combo plate. I live near mills college and this is the best Mexican food I’ve been able to find in the area. It’s really cheap for the portions. I eat here at least twice a week.

Truly lo mejor when it comes to mole. I grew up near this taqueria, and when I moved to SF, I would make trips back just to get the enchiladas. The sauce is a mole red sauce, and perfectly balanced between savory and very subtly sweet. I’ve ordered chicken mole from there for 10 or more people for events. Very affordable as well. A Laurel District gem.

Ate here while I was doing my laundry next door. Got such bad food poisoning, I had to lock myself in the bathroom for 45 mins until the gastric exorcism had run its course. All I had was chicken nachos. Never. Again. Ever.

Really really BLAND food. Came here for a quick bite. I ordered two chicken tacos. They were flavorless, very disappointing. The place was lonely and there were flies flying around the food in the kitchen. Will NEVER eat here again

Taqueria La Mejor is the typical hole in the wall taqueria. burritos seem pricey so went for a few tacos. eats: lengua(tongue), al pastor, & carna asada(1.35@) –all meats prepepped –taco shell freshly fried. –lengua tasted fresh, al pastor, & carna asada tasteless, pregrilled. crumbs: –radishes, salsa on counter –open kitchen, –fast, friendly service –food just so so. some not so fresh…

I have never thrown out part of a burrito before. Never. I forced myself to eat half of it. For the first quarter I was confused. And the last quarter, that just went back into the bag never to be seen by the light of day again. What were the problems you ask? The tortilla tasted like a paper towel. The meat was bland. The guacamole and pico de gallo also contained zero flavor. The only guarantee that they were even in my burrito was because I saw the lady squirt them on. The best part was the rice. Which is saying something. While salsa may have saved the day(and I would have dumped some on if I wasn’t eating this while driving), that’s no excuse for the rest of the ingredients to meld together into a worst disaster than Mars Needs Moms.

think that los comales in the dimond is, by far, much better, but la mejor is a fairly decent substitute if you’re in the neighborhood & very hungry. very friendly staff & great prices but food is only so-so.

I LUV this place mainly for a specific burrito which contains beans, rice, cheese, sour cream, & choice of meat. It’s just the right size… medium Consistently FRESH, I particularly favor the chile verde. I tried lengua at this place for the 1st and 2nd time and must say it’s pretty good, the texture is just like really tender steak, better than what I expected. Best $ 2.50 burrito I’ve had… YES…$ 2.50!!! Both Green and Red Salsas are super good. if you like hot, grab yourself 2 – 3 Jalapenos and consume simultaneously with the burrito drenched with red salsa… sure to make you break a slight sweat It’s not on the menu so you have to ask the kind ladies specifically for the «$ 2.50» burrito with everything… DEALS!!!

This place isn’t a dream come true, though it’s not a nightmare either. I eat here mostly because it’s right off the freeway on my way home. I’ve had the burritos/tacos with different meats and the fish taco — none came close to some of the better places on Fruitvale, but they weren’t bad. What I do really like is a simple refried bean and cheese burrito. I have them ladle in some red sauce and it makes for a comforting meal. The other plus is that the ladies behind the counter are very nice.

From a vegetarian perspective this place is fantastic… a close second to El Farolito’s down the street. Burritos are well balanced, fresh ingredients, and the best salsa verde I’ve tasted. The ladies working there are super nice as well. I’m not surpised about the other reviewer’s negative experience… dude you ordered goat meat and refried beans…

I’m not sure how this place stays open. I should have left when they took the birria out of the fridge and threw it in the microwave. Or perhaps when I noticed that the side o’ beans was more liquid than solid. Or after two people within 10 minutes came in to ask me for money. Instead, I got my food, to go, and tried to enjoy it. The birria was bland, although it was the goatiest-smelling one I have tried to date. Perhaps that’s because it was trying to break a record for most bones in a meal. I tried the refried beans. They tasted more like bean-flavored grease. They’re not the worst I’ve had, but they were pretty close. The meal also came with a side of unremarkable rice and packaged corn tortillas. In the«plus» column, the people working there were nice, and they gave me chopped onion, cilantro, and half a lime. Too bad garnish is not a meal.
